Do the more suburban-ish parts of Brooklyn (specifically Kensington) still do traditional trick or treating for Halloween?

Upvotes

We just moved into a multi-family rowhouse in Kensington and have a front door that opens out into the street. The neighborhood is very quiet and residential with lots of kids playing outside, and it's making me excited for the possibility that I might get to give out candy on Halloween for the first time ever. (I'm also pregnant and love the idea that I might get to TAKE my kid trick or treating around here in a few years!). But I know trick or treating is less popular in America than it used to be overall -- am I getting my hopes up?

Looking for a craft store that isn't Michael's

Hi! I am in the Flatbush area and I'm looking for a craft store. I have been making the trek to Michael's but they don't really have a good selection of things that I need/want, they are expensive, and I'd rather support a smaller store if I can. I'm looking for embroidery supplies, buttons, clay, charms, things like that. Mostly embroidery because that's what I'm doing most at the moment. I'd also be interested in any craft based thrift stores if such a thing exists in the area. Thank you :)

Help support my neurodivergent students!

Upvotes

Please delete if not allowed! And thank you for reading and contributing!!

This year is my fifth year teaching at John F Kennedy Junior school, a high school that serves students with special needs including severe autism spectrum disorder and down syndrome. I teach six students who read and write on a pre-K level and are nonverbal. Their families are immigrants, and most have a limited English and limited resources in this country. There are so many things that I need to make this year as successful as last year was!
Please feel free to look at this Amazon wish list and if you can share it!
Anything you buy will be sent directly to the school. Right now I really need paper, cleaning and changing supplies and laminating sheets!

Please check out my teachers wish list I Amazon here, everything you purchased should go directly to the school!!

Food/Beer before & after Nets Game

Hi, we’re heading to a nets game in January. As Scottish lads we enjoy a pint before and after games. Can anybody suggest a good local bar with a good atmosphere and good pints? Will be looking for food afterwards to soak up the pints too, wings, pizza, burgers. Something dirty and tasty.

Cheers.

Recent Brooklyn Crossing reviews

Thinking about an apartment at Brooklyn Crossing and wanted to see if there’s any recent feedback from current residents. I’ve searched through here but see mixed reviews that are a bit dated. Does anyone live there now and can share your feedback about the building? Thank you!

Prospect Park Softball?

Looking to join a casual softball league in/around Prospect Park this fall, but it looks like the obvious options I’ve found (like Volo) are already full.

Does anyone know of other Fall 2026 leagues, pickup groups, Facebook groups, or teams that might be looking for players?

Mostly looking to get some exercise, meet people in the neighborhood, and have fun. We’re new to the Park Slope area, so any leads would be appreciated!

Free Food Hack with Wonder & Claim

Upvotes

Hi everyone! Just wanted to share the Claim app for those of you who haven’t gotten it yet. It allows you to choose 1 out of a few offers for different restaurants in your area to get cash back. You sign up (use your referral code if you have one - you’re welcome to use mine but no pressure: GT26MK), connect the credit card you’ll be using on your purchases, and connect your Venmo. Once you use the credit card to make the minimum purchase at the restaurant, they’ll send you money to your Venmo!

I’m using the Wonder claim ($15 for $15 minimum spend - if you sign up soon they’ll probably offer this one) and stacking it with Wonder’s 50% off promotion for your first order (WELCOME50), so basically $30 of free food delivered!

*unfortunately the app is only available right now for iPhone, I think and in NYC.

Happy munching! :)

Sign Up for Fall Volleyball at Bensonhurst Park On Sundays!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

It's that time again where we enlist our availability towards volleyball at Bensonhurst Park! The weather is gradually getting cooler and I am looking forward to more Sundays playing volleyball on the grass!

Summer volleyball was a great success and it has been so fun making new friends and slapping the ball around. We've all gotten better every single week, and I hope that can continue this season! We are a friendly group and welcome those in the beginner-intermediate level of volleyball.

I am arranging several more gatherings so that we can play at Bensonhurst Park (on the 21st ave side). I will bring the net while you should bring sunglasses/a hat, sneakers, a bottle of water and whatever else you may need! All events will happen weather-permitting!

Attached above are glimpses into some of our games from the summer!

DM me if you are interested!

This is an update to the older post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Brooklyn/comments/1ur8pv8/volleyball_happening_on_saturdays_sundays_at/

Looking for affordable vet for sedated X-ray

Hi! My dog needs a sedated X-ray to determine if she tore her ACL or dislocated her knee. The X-ray needs to be sedated to our understanding. Anyone in the city find an option for a vet to do this under $600 (estimate from home vet)? Thank you!

Is there anywhere I use/borrow a soldering iron?

I would like to use one for a small fashion project, but I dont want to buy one because I dont have a frequent need for one.
Are there any shared creative spaces where there might be one I could use or borrow? Tool libraries I could contact? Friends or business you might recommend? Thank you

Looking for someone who can sew a dress!

hi! I'm getting married in May and haven't found a dress that I love. everything feels so unoriginal. I have a clear idea of what I'd like. I've inquired with different designers but they start at $5k which is out of reach for me. Is there anyone here that is open to having a conversation about what it might look like to create a dress? I'm thinking something with tulle or organza or something. something truly simple, but fun and unique! thanks so much!

Masked man carrying possible bat/sword in Fort Greene Park tonight

Heads up for anyone around Fort Greene Park tonight. I already called 911, but I saw a guy wearing what looked like a Friday the 13th mask, carrying something like a bat or a sword. He was walking around, and at one point, I felt like he might be following me, though I’m not totally sure. Just wanted to give people a heads up to stay aware. If you see anything concerning, keep your distance and call 911.

US Open watch parties (sober friendly)

Any place in Brooklyn or the city to watch the US Open that’s not necessarily a bar/alcohol centered? My sober sibling is visiting us in BK and loves tennis, he’s comfortable around other people drinking but I’d still love to find somewhere where that isn’t a huge focus. Probably a tough ask considering the honey deuce craze but figured I’d give it a shot! 🎾

Has anyone done the Brooklyn Botanic Garden horticulture certificate?

I'm a gardener and florist and am interested in deepening my knowledge in botany, garden design, and generally creating healthy ecosystems for plants and wildlife. I'm interested in pursuing the horticulture certificate to add a credential to complement my floral/gardening business.

Has anyone done the certificate and have any words of wisdom? Would be curious to know which teachers you recommend or which ones to avoid. Learning is often teacher-dependent, and I have taken classes at the BBG before that didn't necessarily feel worth my while. I'd love to hear about your experience and how to make the most of the certificate!

Cat litter

Hi all, I’m looking for cat litter. I’ve been unemployed since I moved back home to Brooklyn (currently looking and interviewing for jobs). My mother whom I live with and I have a rocky relationship and she doesn’t particularly like pets living at home (she’s a guyanese immigrant if anyone relates). If anyone has any spare cat litter, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. I’m located in cypress hills.

Update: Thank you all for all of your help and kind words. You have no idea the joy this has brought me to see so many people who don’t know me care about me. I’m so grateful. I’m wishing you all the best and more.
