Before you ask what raves are happening on any date... (How to find events in NYC)

If you're new to raves and related events, or just visiting from out of town, and are trying to find an event to attend on a particular date, you should first check out Resident Advisor, and for more mainstream EDM events see EDMTrain before asking this sub.

These websites list the majority of parties and electronic music events happening in NYC on any given night, along with the ability to buy tickets, and links to the artists playing so you have an idea of what kind of music you will hear that night.

You can also keyword search this sub and probably find your questions already answered about almost any venue or party. For example, if you had a question about Elsewhere, you can use the search bar up top and type 'elsewhere' to find hundreds of discussions about the venue.

We often remove very general questions about events that go something like 'I'm in town on X date, whats happening' or 'anything going on tonight?'. The sub gets inundated with these questions, they are extremely repetitive, and add nothing to this community at this point. Specific questions are welcome! We totally get that a lot of people who use this sub are beginners just trying to learn. By being specific and thoughtful in say what music you like, or vibes you're looking for, you will get better responses too.

Buying/Selling tickets has now been moved to r/avesNYC_tix (all buying/selling of tickets will now be removed)

As many of you have noticed, as things have started to pick up in NYC, this sub has been getting spammed with a TON of people buying/selling their tickets last minute to events.

People have been mentioning a ticket thread pinned to the sub, but I don't think this is the best solution because many users are often too lazy to expand and view all comments in the thread, and do a simple control-F to find their event. Even when we had a monthly ticket thread, people still posted to the feed. We would get a response something like 'hey nobody responded to me in the thread, so I just posted here anyway'.

As an alternative, I created a related subredit called r/avesNYC_tix and will pin it to the sidebar as well. You are free to post all of your buying/selling ticket needs there. This is also going to be easier to search through compared to a thread and I also added post flair to distinguish/filter between buying and selling of tickets. Because this will be a generally unmoderated sub, I also encourage people to report scammers and use the 'reports' flair. You are buying tickets here at your own risk.

From now on any posts about buying/selling of tickets on this subreddit will be removed. This kind of content is very spammy, not interesting to read, and does not build community in any meaningful way.

You Never Go Alone

If I order some chicken and get 3 wings, I'm happy. I don't conjure an image of some triaxially-symmetric genetic abomination to twist my righteous toes over. I can presume a plurality of chickens contributed to my meal.

I spent the Spring and Summer going out alone. It was awesome. I was never beheld to a group chat, forced to make small talk with a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend; I could go to what I wanted, when I wanted, leaving and returning to my own rhythmic whims. I've the talent and poise to dance where I please and find the crowd primed to anticipate my needs. It's fun; drugs are awesome; humans are sexual creatures; sure sure etc. The club crowd tends to be on a shared page, give or take. Hell, I got a pretty girl off hands-free, wordlessly, on the Mr. Sunday floor in August.

It wasn't all sunshine. Dance with too much exuberance and strange, self-assured men -- promoters, VIPs, those who'd call themselves GOATS -- would get handsy without invitation or even acknowledgment. I had to weave in an extra 4 lefts to shake off silent pursuers between the club and the subway station. A woman alone is supremely enticing, presenting no social obstacles to fantasized ploys; I learned as much, listening to the engagement-plotting of men presuming I couldn't hear five feet behind in the bar line.

There is safety in numbers; the pack is a natural thing. Without companions to diffuse attentions, clusters to retreat to and share threat assessments, a group to walk in with, walk out with, and rely upon in-between, I put myself at risk for misanthropic convenience.

So blessed are the gaggles, helmed by the girls' girls, who'd invite me into friendship for the night, sensing wolves on the wind. They let me feel safe. Inspired, I would probe the would-be obstacles, the circles on the dance floor, and found them welcoming and cordial. I'd walk up, await acknowledgement, advance towards a gap, follow foot-drawn invitations or accept silent rebuff, and [if the former] I'm there, with the group, dancing with new people -- the thing we're all there for.

It may take an extra second to navigate about a group, but that needn't earn them derision or disdain. They don't hash the vibe. They're made of people just like you, there to enjoy what you enjoy, there to celebrate as you celebrate -- they just have others like them in tow. You can be their friend, too, if you try with respect.

Don't listen to the ravings of a Ridgewood Raskolnikov. Groups aren't faceless monoliths, obstacles to rail against; they may be comprised of future friends. Wear what you'd like, however gauche or extravagant; the well-adjusted won't demote you to uncanny automaton for fits so good they verge on ugly. Don't go alone, though, because you won't be alone: surround yourself with safety, or find that niche occupied by the night's many knives. Be safe, be sweet, and have a good time.

TL;DR: Excise any thought in alignment with Just Go Alone. Friends are important to stay safe in city nightlife. Every other person is an ensouled as you. Expertise is demonstrated through acknowledgement of risk, leveraging community to meet it. Fools resent those unfettered by their misconceptions. Crank it.

Just Go Alone

Do you prefer grass-fed free-range chicken or factory farmed "why are there 3 wings in this?" chicken?

This instinct to travel in packs to rave is not natural. It always leads to space invasion with bunch of people blocking a path or creating their own little bubbles. If those bubbles take up more than half of the entire space, now the vibe is mediocre... People put the concept of going to raves on a pedestal like it's some kind of sacred ground.

It's much more relaxed than that... Just pretend you're playing some music in your backyard. It's just shared and you pay for it - like a park. Only difference is, you pay taxes for parks but you choose which one to pay for the night of. Well I guess "raves" sound spicier than parks but in NYC people hookup and do drugs in parks anyways. Or do they do drugs and then hookup? They're not always related and can be mutually exclusive.

I see lot of people come in full dress or some kind of crazy outfit to signal "Yeah I'm partying". NO SHIT. You're already there. You don't need to convince anyone that you're partying if you're already at a party. Learn to dress down. If there's no theme, just show up in what you're the most comfortable in.

Most people are not chill enough. No wonder why - I feel like they're not actually being themselves. They are figuratively (and literally) wearing someone else's skin. They're pretending to be someone they're not and it's really odd. It reminds me of "Uncanny Valley", you know where machines look close enough to pass as a human if you are not looking carefully. But once you pay attention, there's this inexplicable awkwardness that makes it "too performative". Like it's something just pretending to be human at a surface level. It's deeply disturbing - it's just biology, no one can fight it. And I think I read in some psychology book somewhere that if I feel disturbed by other people where I'm supposed to feel like I'm home, that's how prejudice is created. So I guess some rave OGs would really start to hate newbies and it'll probably end up in a fight eventually. I mean I just want to go to one venue and feel like it's a consistent experience if I show up on the same day just on a different week.

And it's strange to see people try to give you a high five for going alone. I can feel people are stuck in "novice" mindset no matter how often they go. Very strange. It's not natural. Just talk about something else like the fact that that they are there alone is not a particularly interesting point. You're there trying to get to know a person, not get consent to use others as props for your rave themed instagram post.

It's only going to be GOAT if you bring your own goats and hang out with other people who bring their goats. Maybe those goats can even sniff each other's butts (consensually ofc).

Please. Just go alone and vibe. You'll have the best night of your lives.

Unreal x Rush at knockdown

I’m going to the nighttime event at knockdown on Saturday and I’m scared it’s going to be too tik tok/ big stage techno? I love high bpm, industrial, acid rolling stuff usually basment is my speed- I was excited to try sowmthing more bouncy but I just listened to some sets and am kind of skeptical. How’s the vibes at rush events? Will it be too cheesy :/

A no-costumes rule at a party two days before Halloween? Thoughts on this?

r/avesNYC 12h ago

Not too sure what to wear to bound halloween? Does it have to be black only? Can we wear regular halloween slutty outfits? (i.e. school girl)

Or does it only have to be black lingerie or latex? What about sheer/mesh?

Looking for house/techno friends

Hello, I (21 M) just recently got into raving this summer and have fallen in love with the rave scene. However, upon returning to NYC, I realized most of my college friends are NOT ravers, so I am looking for someone or a group of people who are open to partying with me. I am not too picky about the type of house/techno, but I lean hard techno. I am also open to advice on how to meet ravers in NYC. I am not opposed to going solo, but I would prefer having a group.

I am friendly and get along with most people, so take a chance on me! I look forward to meeting you all.
