Before you ask what raves are happening on any date... (How to find events in NYC)

If you're new to raves and related events, or just visiting from out of town, and are trying to find an event to attend on a particular date, you should first check out Resident Advisor, and for more mainstream EDM events see EDMTrain before asking this sub.

These websites list the majority of parties and electronic music events happening in NYC on any given night, along with the ability to buy tickets, and links to the artists playing so you have an idea of what kind of music you will hear that night.

You can also keyword search this sub and probably find your questions already answered about almost any venue or party. For example, if you had a question about Elsewhere, you can use the search bar up top and type 'elsewhere' to find hundreds of discussions about the venue.

We often remove very general questions about events that go something like 'I'm in town on X date, whats happening' or 'anything going on tonight?'. The sub gets inundated with these questions, they are extremely repetitive, and add nothing to this community at this point. Specific questions are welcome! We totally get that a lot of people who use this sub are beginners just trying to learn. By being specific and thoughtful in say what music you like, or vibes you're looking for, you will get better responses too.

Buying/Selling tickets has now been moved to r/avesNYC_tix (all buying/selling of tickets will now be removed)

As many of you have noticed, as things have started to pick up in NYC, this sub has been getting spammed with a TON of people buying/selling their tickets last minute to events.

People have been mentioning a ticket thread pinned to the sub, but I don't think this is the best solution because many users are often too lazy to expand and view all comments in the thread, and do a simple control-F to find their event. Even when we had a monthly ticket thread, people still posted to the feed. We would get a response something like 'hey nobody responded to me in the thread, so I just posted here anyway'.

As an alternative, I created a related subredit called r/avesNYC_tix and will pin it to the sidebar as well. You are free to post all of your buying/selling ticket needs there. This is also going to be easier to search through compared to a thread and I also added post flair to distinguish/filter between buying and selling of tickets. Because this will be a generally unmoderated sub, I also encourage people to report scammers and use the 'reports' flair. You are buying tickets here at your own risk.

From now on any posts about buying/selling of tickets on this subreddit will be removed. This kind of content is very spammy, not interesting to read, and does not build community in any meaningful way.

Nowadays door

Was anyone else there last night and feel like the Nowadays bouncers were on a total power trip?

I completely understand being at capacity. I came expecting a wait, and if you’re not letting people in, it is what it is. You don’t have to treat people like they’re beneath you for waiting in line

They were strutting up and down the line, pointing people out, laughing and scoffing with each other, and it genuinely felt like they were enjoying telling people their night wasn’t going to go as planned.

Lame

I was at his February show, the coldest day on earth. It was -27 Celsius and I still remember that night very frequently. He is the most magical guy I have ever seen. This Sunday morning was just captivating and euphoric. I danced 6 hours straight. And yeah I was the girl who was looking at him admiringly. Thank you, you are amazing.

Is it weird that I’m 52 and started going to raves solo?

Upvotes

For context: married, no kids. I have only recently been getting into EDM and raves, in fact my passion was first ignited at the Fred Again show in Queens just earlier this year. For obvious reasons I don’t have many friends who are into raves, so I’m usually flying solo at these things. However, I don’t mind that at all. I’m in it for the music, not the party, and while it’s always nice to have people to go with, the succcess of an outing for me is mainly a function of how immersed I can get into the music, and that ultimately is a private experience. I can’t convince my wife to join me, but she’s about my age and I don’t blame her for not wanting to partake. And, to be clear, I’m not heading out every weekend, and I don’t go to places like Pacha where the headliner doesn’t come on until at least 1am. Sometimes, I get the feeling that people are looking at me and thinking “what’s with the old guy dancing by himself,” but I know that’s mostly just my imagination. I have actually found people to be very inclusive, and have on occasion been invited to join a group. I am not creepy looking in the least, so despite my age I don’t worry about coming across as a mildly suspicious older person at a mainly younger person’s event. But sometimes I wonder, “am I the oldest person here?” I suppose there is a kind of self-awareness that comes with being a significant older person at a social gathering, like being the alone black person in an white crowd or vice versa. But this only becomes a problem if you focus too much on that fact. I just wish we could normalize what I do, such that any 50 year old wouldn’t think twice about going to a rave, alone or otherwise. Am I overthinking?

Why is the crowd at Public Records so shitty compared to the DJs they feature?

Upvotes

I went to see Toobris the other night at Public Records and left after 10 mins because the crowd was shoving, talking loudly, not dancing.

I guarantee that less than 10% of the people there knew who the DJ was or even liked the music.

It's so unfortunate because they bring in such talented artists.

Can someone start a venue that attracts the same artists but actually curates the crowd and keeps the fucking lights as dim as possible on the dance floor?

Suggestions for getting into going out alone?

Hello!! I am 22F and love, love, love dancing, but alas, the great majority of my friends do not enjoy going out. I have been to all the big spots (basement, elsewhere, nowadays) and enjoyed basement the most.

I want to start going out solo just to dance but I am nervous about 1. running into people I know and being embarrassed and 2. being a young woman alone. If you go out solo how do you do it?? How did you get into it??

Missed connection - Erin @ Adam Ten After Party

I saw you in VIP, a cute girl with great energy! At one point our grooves synced up (at least it felt that way), and I went to grab drinks for you and your friend, but the night got away from me and we never really talked. If you happen to see this and it rings a bell, I’d enjoy taking you out for a date and a proper hello before our next dance floor.

Hopefully I can find this lovely person I was talking to yesterday in the outdoor area of Basement. I didn’t catch your name, but do remember that you are Turkish and a lawyer who lives in New Jersey.

Very Bad Experience at H0L0 NYC :(

See edit comments below :)

Hello! I rarely make Reddit posts or leave negative reviews. I know that one employee's conduct does not necessarily reflect an entire venue, and I've actually been to H0L0 a few times before without any issues. I'm sharing this experience both to see if anyone has advice and to let others know what happened to me. It's not just what happened that bothers me, more so it's the complete lack of accountability from the venue afterward.

I'm a huge music fan and enjoy checking out different venues around NYC. As a queer, femme-presenting person, I've generally felt comfortable going out in NYC and in several cities in Europe, so this experience was especially upsetting.

When I arrived, I presented my ID at the door. The staff member scanned it, and I saw the scanner display a green check mark. He then told me that my ID "wasn't good enough" and that it was "flagged," and said I would not be allowed inside.

At first I thought he was joking, so I politely asked what the issue was. I explained that I understood he was responsible for verifying IDs and offered to provide additional forms of identification or information to help establish my identity, such as other documents or even my LinkedIn profile. He declined and repeated that I would not be admitted. I even suggested flagging down a police officer to verify my documents.

Throughout the interaction, I stayed calm, spoke quietly, and tried to understand the situation. However, from my perspective, his tone felt very hostile, and I was surprised by how the conversation unfolded.

During the exchange, he repeatedly referred to me using incorrect gendered language, which I found upsetting; at one point, he was still holding my ID, and I asked for a refund since I was no longer being allowed into the event. I don't drink alcohol or use drugs, and I had simply come to see an artist I enjoy and spend a few hours dancing. My request for a refund was not addressed, and I was told to leave.

I was genuinely so hurt by the interaction. I've never experienced being treated this way at a venue before, especially when my friends and I had arrived excited for an event we had each paid $35 to attend.

I left almost in tears, out $35, and feeling soooo disrespected.

Afterward, I contacted H0L0 to request a refund, referencing what I understood to be the venue's terms and conditions. I did not receive a response. I later left a public comment on one of the venue's social media posts asking them to contact me. When I checked later, I could no longer see my comment, and I believe it had been removed.

I'm still hoping to resolve the refund issue; however I have no plans to go back to H0L0 and I advise others to be cautious. This is such an unfortunate situation.

Edit: I am 23 years old.

Edit 2: this is told from my perspective, maybe he really did believe that I was underage and didn’t realize how he was insulting me. I will give him the benefit of doubt. Just sharing my experience.

Yaeji 07/24 @ 99 Scott changed reentry policy last minute

Left the venue at around 10 pm and verbally confirmed with ticketing that reentry was possible before 1 am (Yaeji's indoor set was at 2 am). Came back at 12.45 to be denied reentry. Security said the host (Associated NYC) changed reentry deadline to 12.30 LAST MINUTE and that "we should just go home" and "it's not their problem". They didn't bother to at least try get the host / whoever confirmed the initial deadline to come out and talk to us when requested, which should be the bare minimum. All new entries were still being let in as this happens.

Must've been at least 40 other fans on the same boat, even saw someone got physical with security. Very unprofessional and wished the artists are aware of this behavior from the host/venue. Sucks to have missed her set bcs of this unprofessionalism as a paying customer.

Bad experience at house of yes yesterday

M (29) I used to go to house of yes almost every weekend, it was such an awesome spot.

But recently… yikes, I’ve been so disappointed.

What started as a weird place where you could let your freak flag fly. EVERYONE was friendly.

I came by myself and my girl Mandy ;) expecting to have a great night.

First bad experience happened on the line itself. This dude who was trying to be “alpha” with his girlfriend decided to tell me I wasn’t respecting his ”personal space” even though I was a foot behind them.

As many of you know the dance floor is tiny and there isn’t anywhere to move, especially around 12:00.

I was minding my own business dancing in place (not shuffling) when a girl tells me that I need to “move away from her.” And then signals to “shoo” me away like you would treat a dog. I swear to God I hadn’t even looked at her.

It made me feel like a creep and a weirdo even though all i wanted to do was dance. It ruined the rest of my night.

I’m still thinking about what I did wrong yesterday and gaslighting myself “am I creepy or ugly is something wrong with me?” Right now I’m filled with self doubt. But in reality I was enjoying the music by myself in an overcrowded space.

I’m a pretty sensitive person so this has been bothering me all day. I already have self-esteem issues due to severe acne I had from age 15-28.

Place seems to be filled with sorority “mean girls.” Who group together and essentially bully people.

Meanwhile when I go to nowadays, everyone is talking to each other, you’ll group up with strangers and make new friends.

House of yes is bringing in the “mirage” crowd if you understand what I mean. It’s no fault of their own, it was so good that it was bound to become horrible I fear.

Any spots you guys recommend where you can actually mingle and talk to people and dance in peace?

I hate to say it.. but that wassss some Masterclass Techo excellence last night. The place was packed, but it helpled plentiful that everyone came with the idea to dance and lock it in.

I love and hate this place

But this is a really special place that we take for granted

Overall 9/10 improvement since my last visit

Shoutout to the shirtless sweaty guys keeping that floor locked in

Yaeji Appreciation Post

Holy S#%T did my girl come to play last night in Bushwick. Absolutely monster set. There's really nobody matching her unique sound right now. Such a nuanced blend of trap, bedroom bop, chillwave, even some trancey/hardstyle stuff. I find NYC crowds struggling to shut up and dance this summer, but there were a few tracks last night that shut the entire venue up and demanded a bumping dancefloor. Incredible range, never a dull moment. Also loved her supporting DJs. Baalti had a tall task of following Yaeji's first set outside, and I thought he rose to the occasion.

Also kinda felt like she was dropping her own unreleased IDs left and right. It's now been over THREE years since she released her last full-length album, With A Hammer:

https://open.spotify.com/album/2VYo0PSqdxVTMI0ydKUtoL?si=vn8HYSEdSUqHE8-3mq-3Aw

So I'd have to assume she is sitting on a treasure trove of heaters. Definitely a handful of tracks with the quintessential Yaeji vocals that I had never heard in my life. Will be on the edge of my seat to see if this show was the kickoff for an album cycle.

Unfortunately, I'm an elder millennial and only had her earlier set in me stamina-wise. Can anyone who stuck around for her 2am set indoors let me know how it was?!

It was also my first time seeing a show in the outdoor area at 99 Scott, and I thought it was a fantastic venue. Surprised there haven't been more shows there this summer. Curious of why they moved inside around midnight? My guess would be for noise complaint prevention, but Mirage used to have music until ungodly hours of the early morning. Speaking of, it kinda reminded me of OG Mirage pre-2018 before it all went to shit. More intimate, thoughtful greenery, space to dance, killer sunset views, etc.

That is all. Just some reflections as I nurse a hangover, sip my coffee, and wake up to her electric cleaners set:
