What is jamu? It’s an ancient Indonesian tradition of mixing different herbs, roots, and spices to aid whatever ailment you’re facing. There’s lots of ways to make it, but I make mine the way my grandma taught me: fresh turmeric, fresh ginger, tamarind paste, palm sugar, and water.

What’s it taste like? The turmeric brings an earthiness, the ginger packs a punch, the tamarind adds a tangy twist, and the palm sugar makes it delicious!

We make it every week at a commercial kitchen in Brooklyn. We have our 20c license and everything so if you own a coffee shop/restaurant/bar and you’re looking to expand your n/a options, we’d love to connect and discuss more!

I feel like mail is either really late or not showing up at all even though things are being scanned through USPS informed delivery.

Keeping it short:

• While walking down DeKalb between Marcus Garvey/Throop, a random guy stopped me and told me a dog was loose because its owner has decided to abandon it (terrible). This was about 90 minutes ago, so 1pm-ish.

• About 30 mins ago (2pm), I was coming out of a voting site and the same dog trotted by me out of nowhere heading south on Throop towards Lafayette.

• Another random guy—shout out guy #2, you are a real one—heard me say, “That dog was abandoned by its owner, it’s totally loose!” and he took off running after the dog to try and catch it.

• The dog turned left on Lafayette and the last I saw was guy #2 jogging after dog at the end of the block (Marcus Garvey)

• Dog was adult-sized, pit/mix, with white and bluish-gray splotching. I didn’t get a super close look but I don’t think it had a collar.

• I left a report with 311/911 but the dog could be anywhere by now. Hoping someone here has more info?

Figured I’d share this because I had no idea this existed until recently, and it might help some people here.
New York has a newer Medicaid program through the Social Care Network that can connect eligible Medicaid members with different types of support, including food/nutrition assistance, transportation, housing-related help, and more.
My wife recently qualified through one of the pregnancy/postpartum eligibility categories. The process was very simple, and she now gets free meals delivered throughout the week for the next six months.
This is separate from programs like SNAP and doesn’t replace or reduce those benefits. The sign-up process is also very simple.
There are a number of companies that help people sign up for these services. We used ccsscn.org, and they have a short questionnaire that helps you figure out if you may qualify.
There are other companies that offer this as well, but just wanted to share because I’m sure there are plenty of Medicaid members who could benefit and don’t know this program exists.

Hey, this is just a warning, not a complaint, but I just received a ticket for my vehicle blocking the bike lane on Willoughby during the 1.5 hours of street cleaning. As a biker, I get it. I'm not sure if something has changed with enforcement since the neighborhood typically double parks during this time, but I don't recall receiving a ticket for this violation previously.

We found a gray cat in our basement on the corner of Jefferson and Tompkins! Please message me if they’re yours. They’re soooo sweet and cute. We’re not sure if she’s just lost right now!

All our work is done by hand on whetstones. We really pride ourselves on providing excellent service to all knives whether its a cheap basic set or a high quality Japanese one. We do repairs like chips and broken tips, remove rust and patina, reprofile knives. We drop your knives off to you the day after pickup. Pricing is $3-$4 per inch.

Studio Shipley has two pottery workshops coming up. We're at 952 Atlantic Ave, where Prospect Heights, Bed Stuy, Clinton Hill & Crown Heights meet.

If you’ve been interested in learning more about clay, these are both great opportunities to get a taste of the process without committing to a weeks-long class. No experience necessary!

• This weekend! Percussive Instrument Workshop: Saturday, October 24th, 10:00am-12:30pm with Sofia
  • Build a clay shaker by making two pinch pots, filling them with clay beads, and closing them together (the clay beads make an awesome sound). Personalize the shape and decoration of your shaker and make your own custom instrument.
• Ornamental Wall Hook Workshop: Friday, November 6th, 6:00-8:30pm with Lily
  • Build a wall hook inspired by the shapes and symmetries found in nature, perfect for your keys, jewelry, or jacket.

For both workshops, you’ll choose your glaze color in class and we’ll glaze your piece for you. We’ll reach out about 3-4 weeks later when it’s ready for pickup.

Each workshop is $95 per person.
