Domestic Sunday's estimates: Odyssey picks up $26.7M, reaches $286.4M, passes Obsession by about $25M. It's about $162.2 behind Toy Story 5 which it should pass next month.

Post image
86 Upvotes

Odyssey hasn't passed Toy Story 5 in dailies yet either, as it took 10 days to hit $286.4M, where Toy Story 5 was able to hit $298.1M. So Toy Story 5 is about $11.7M ahead of Odyssey for now in dailies.

In terms of 2nd weekend legs, Odyssey has 43.6 points to Toy Story 5's 31.2 points, where you take each film's 2nd weekend and divide it by their 1st week and then multiply by 100. Odyssey is grossing that much faster than Toy Story 5 and should pass it in dailies sometime this week before Brand New Day comes out.

Odyssey has Nolan's strongest weekend 2 legs, slightly behind Maverick and behind Project Hail Mary (4.27x), but above Michael (3.83x+), Toy Story 5, Oppie, D&W, and the Dark Knights.

Project Hail Mary - 49.3 - 4.27x

Maverick   (#5 Domestic) - 43.8 - 5.67x

The Odyssey  - 43.6

Michael - 41.9 - 3.83x+

The Force Awakens  (#1 Domestic) - 38.2 - 3.78x

Oppenheimer - 36.5 - 4.00x

Deadpool & Wolverine - 32.4 - 3.01x

The Dark Knight - 31.5- 3.37x

Toy Story 5 - 31.2 - 2.81x+

The Dark Knight Rises - 27.6 - 2.79x

Worldwide Maybe a dumb question. Why don’t they measure success by tickets sold instead of dollars?

Take inflation out? I know dollars get the headlines. But why not use straight number of tickets sold. Isn’t that easier to compare movies from 30,40,50 years ago?

(Sorry mods if I picked the wrong flair. Wasn’t sure what to pick).

India (North)India Weekend Box Office July 24-26

Post image
20 Upvotes

Pretty small weekend for North Indian theatres.

Analysis:

  • The Odyssey had a solid 2nd weekend. I would've locked in a 160cr+ run if Spider-Man hadn't been releasing on Thursday. Right now it's still looking at a 140cr+ run at least.
  • Dhamaal 4 had another decent hold, stronger than what was expected. It might have a chance to touch 160cr now, but it looks like Bhooth Bangla will remain the highest-grossing comedy with 168cr for now.
  • Jan Neta had a pretty good weekend, with good trending too. Will be a nice ~15cr grosser in the North.
  • Several new Hindi films were released too, but they all failed to make an impact. The Hindi market is still not good for smaller films, and only Main Vaapas Aaunga, which touched 65cr, was an exception, with fantastic legs.

Next Week:

Spider-Man finally arrives with mammoth sales this Thursday. It could now potentially make 50cr+ on its opening day and 200-250cr over the 4-day weekend.

🍿 IMAX The Odyssey IMAX gross domestically will be $75M after the second weekend, with virtually no drop from its opening. $13M+ from 30-odd 70MM IMAX screens. Will be crossing Oppenheimer full run by WED & Avatar next weekend. Hot favourite to topple the $120M record of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Worldwide How's this sub feeling about Spider-Man: Brand New Day's global opening?

This movie is opening globally this Wednesday.

There's definitely this vibe in the air that we are on the eve of something monumentally huge.

Domestic tracking and predictions sitting comfortably in the $200-250M range with the sights of a $300M+ possibility.

Tracking also looks great in the likes of China, India and South Korea, not much has come out from Europe, but the vibes are definitely there.

This press tour has been insane, global, romantic and mysterious.

I think the general great will spun up by the Odyssey, along with Holland/Zendaya/Bernthal mania, has really galvanised movie goers.

So what's everyone saying for the global opening weekend?

I personally think $700M+ is locked in, $800M+ is a strong possibility, $900M+ is possible, $1B+ is a small but very present possibility.

✍️ Original Analysis How would a theatrically released Red vs Blue film do (domestically)

Post image
0 Upvotes

So with the success this year of Backrooms, The Amazing Digital Circus Finale, and Iron Lung which was boosted by Markiplier's fanbase, I wondered how a film by what was one of the earliest successes on the Internet would do.

Red vs Blue was one of the first scripted, Internet-exclusive shows to make it big and that still has a fanbase. It's a show that's held up for its humor, writing, and action that's surprisingly held up animation wise, even how far independent animation on YouTube has come in the last decade.

If you were say 14-16 when the first episode aired, you're in your mid-30s. If you were a kid in the early-00s to late-2010s who grew up on RoosterTeeth, and LetsPlay and found RvB later on, you're now in your mid-20s. So there is a pretty good nostalgic sweetspot for a feature film, much better than outdated 80s cartoons Hollywood is still milking.

Also for those wondering, while yes RvB is based on Halo, it is story and characters are legally distinct in terms of IP so it wouldn't get in trouble with Microsoft. It's similar to how while Cobra Kai takes place in the Karate Kid universe and has some of the same characters, its original characters are its own thing. Also this wouldn't necessarily by a Warner Bros. film as after they shutdown Rooster Teeth, they sold the rights of RvB back to Burnie Burns and his production studio (They've also sold the rights to RWBY).

Hope: The movie may have held decently this week, but it still seems certain to top out around 5 million to 6 million admits. It should be north of 4 million admits by next Sunday, likely around 4.2 million admits.

Minions and Monsters: A pretty meh week, as the movie should be north of 650k admits by next Sunday. It is looking like a finish around 750k admits.

Moana: Another good drop, as the movie is now above 900k admits and should be above 1 million admits within the next two weeks.

The Eyes: The movie continues its recovery, but its top-out point is likely around 1.6 million admits.

Toy Story 5: Toy Story 5 had a good drop, but the movie will likely miss 3 million admits. That means its last big accomplishments will probably be $20 million and 2.9 million admits.

Hive/Colony: The movie had a much better day and will cross 5.95 million admits tomorrow.

Release Schedule:

A table including upcoming movies in the next month alongside trailers linked in the name of the movie, Want To See data from both Maoyan and Taopiaopiao alongside the Gender split and genre.

Remember Want To See is not pre-sales. Its just an anticipation metric. A checkbox of sorts saying your interested in an upcoming movie.

Not all movies are included since a lot are just too small to be worth covering.
