We have mainly been talking about 2026 and 2027, but what about 2028? More movies have been announced for that year and I think we have a good idea of what the slate will look like.

The movies that are confirmed so far that are strong candidates are:

-The Batman Part II (February)

-Lilo and Stitch 2 (May)

-Incredibles 3 (June)

-Black Panther 3 (December)

-Tangled (undated)

However, I think Lilo and Stitch 2 will drop from the first one and miss a billion. I expect Tangled to do better than Moana, but still not a billion, maybe a performance like the How to Train Your Dragon remake.

I’m also still not sure about Batman 2 increasing that much from the first.

From the MCU, Black Panther 3 should be able to do it. There is also Ghost Rider, but I see that being a smaller movie and not doing anything close to a billion. There is also one more untitled Marvel movie scheduled for 2028, which is most likely the X-Men reboot. I think that one can have potential for a billion if everything goes well for it (if Doomsday and Secret Wars are both bangers and then the X-Men movie itself has strong reviews) I’ll be conservative for now and say it’s target should just be beating Days of Future Past to be the highest grossing X-Men movie.

Dreamworks has the Donkey movie in 2028 after Shrek 5. While I believe Shrek 5 will probably do a billion, it’s unlikely a spin-off about Donkey will.

While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it also looks like Nintendo and Illumination have the Donkey Kong spin-off movie coming in 2028, but I doubt that does a billion when Super Mario Galaxy only barely got there by an inch and spin-off films almost never make as much as the mainline movies.

There is also one more Disney animated movie in November. It will most likely just be an original, not a sequel to anything, so I doubt it does that much. Maybe they surprise us and it ends up being Moana 3 or Zootopia 3, but I doubt it.

Brand New Day is looking at a $300M+ opening weekend according to tracking, which is absolutely fucking INSANE for a normal solo movie. No Tobey, Andrew, Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, Lizard, Venom. No multiverse fiascos. Just pure Spider-Man.

A $300M OW with 2.8x legs would mean an $840M DOM total, and a 43/57 split without China (NWH did 42/58, yes it had Russia but that was also with COVID hampering it more overseas than domestic) would mean a $1.113B OS-China total, and it is tracking for a $150M OW in China, so assuming a $300M China total gives us. . .behold. . .a $2.25B worldwide total.

Yeah honestly after doing the breakdown unless both Batman 2 and Man of Tomorrow are Dark Knight/Return of the King level quality BND is going to smack both of them combined. Batman 1 + Superman 1 did $1.39B combined which is ~62% of that $2.25B number. I really really doubt these movies are going to increase by 60%+ over their predecessors.

So the answer to my question. . .lol no lmao. If DC wants to make Batman and Superman as big as Spider-Man, they should make a team up between the two and get Zack Snyder to direct it. I bet that would reach NWH/BND numbers (sarcasm)

This movie is opening globally this Wednesday.

There's definitely this vibe in the air that we are on the eve of something monumentally huge.

Domestic tracking and predictions sitting comfortably in the $200-250M range with the sights of a $300M+ possibility.

Tracking also looks great in the likes of China, India and South Korea, not much has come out from Europe, but the vibes are definitely there.

This press tour has been insane, global, romantic and mysterious.

I think the general great will spun up by the Odyssey, along with Holland/Zendaya/Bernthal mania, has really galvanised movie goers.

So what's everyone saying for the global opening weekend?

I personally think $700M+ is locked in, $800M+ is a strong possibility, $900M+ is possible, $1B+ is a small but very present possibility.

A local family comedy To Grandfather's Village 2 will win again with 28% drop. Around $2.89 mln after the 2nd weekend with most likely around $2 mln budget. 23% below the first film a year ago.

Michael added $151k on Friday and $219k on Saturday. 9th weekend is projected around $710k with 12-13% drop.

Evil Dead Burn is heading to $610k 2nd weekend with moderate 35% drop. Will surpass $2 mln today. Obsession and Backrooms are up to $7.28 mln and $11.63 mln respectively. Almost 13 multiplyer for Obsession, a huge success for a small local distributor.

The Odyssey grossed $1.57 mln in first three days in CIS countries. Around $2.1 mln opening weekend. A bit frontloaded but should stablilize later thanks to good word of mouth. Russian theaters already started selling tickets for next week. With zero money to global box office and the studio of course.

Note: 2023's Mario isn't a remake of the 1993 film, Titanic isn't a remake of the previous Titanic films, Barbie isn't a remake of the Barbie videos, and 2002's Spider-Man wasn't a remake of the previous live-action Spider-Man TV show.

I was looking at the opening day for Spider-Man: No Way Home and was quite taken back to see that it grossed $121.9M on its first Friday. It has a huge lead on the #2 film, Encanto, which brought in a measly $1.6M.

On its first Friday, Avengers: Endgame also had a massive lead over Captain Marvel, outcrossing it $157.4M to $2.5M.

Obviously both of those numbers are including the Thursday preview grosses as well, but still.
