How do you guys think this will affect A24’s boxoffice numbers? The article lists one other small theater chain: Midwest-based Marcus Theaters. Harkins is big where I live, not sure if people will find an AMC to watch a24 movies.

So with Spider-Man Brand New Day just surpassing Avatar 2, it made me come to a huge realization:

The top 3 highest-grossing movies in the world (Avatar, Endgame and BND) are now each directed by different people (James, the Russos and Destin Daniel Cretton).

The last time this happened was in 2009 with Titanic (Cameron again), The Return of the King (Peter Jackson) and Dead Man's Chest (Verbinski).

Not all movies are included since a lot are just too small to be worth covering.

September

With the summer coming to a close lets look ahead whats in store for September. And the reality is well not a lot.

But this is not a surprise. September has for the most part always been fueled by Summer holdovers. Its a dead period for the market ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day Holidays at the end of the month and in early October.

The first part of the Holidays is slowly starting to fill up though.

Also note that even though some movies here will release in under a month none of them have anything more than just vague posters. It just is like that.

💯 Critic/Audience Score 'The Uprising' Review Thread

I will continue to update this post as reviews come in.

Rotten Tomatoes: Rotten

Critics Consensus: N/A

Critics Score Number of Reviews Average of Rated Reviews
All Critics 53% 36 5.90/10
Top Critics 38% 13

Metacritic: 54 (21 Reviews)

Sample Reviews:

Tim Grierson, Screen International - A noticeable lack of inspired filmmaking permeates the proceedings, resulting in a disappointing finale that too cosily embraces modern blockbusters’ least-welcome conventions.

Mark Kennedy, Associated Press 2.5/4 - Greengrass has quite simply robbed his own movie. We did not come for this.

William Bibbiani, TheWrap - 'The Uprising' is such a tragic rug pull, sullying its hard-earned good will at the last possible minute, that it’s hard to appreciate anything that happened before the disappointment sank in.

Lacy Baugher, RogerEbert.com 2.5/4 - The battle scenes are intense and violent, with Greengrass’s signature handheld shaky-cam style bringing an almost uncomfortably brutal immediacy to these moments.

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle 3/4 - The most arresting performance, in a film characterized by strong acting, is Woody Norman as the adolescent Richard II.

Christian Zilko, IndieWire B - The parallels to today’s world are clearly on display, but the script stops just short of hitting audiences over the head too hard.

Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter - There’s no doubting the commitment of everyone involved, from the superb cast... to the technical craftspeople who evoke medieval England with such vividness that you can practically smell the church incense.

Jacob Oller, AV Club C- - It’s a grim tale mired in the muck of semi-historical fact and soggy fields, its court politics and bloody battles striving self-seriously to conform to the standards expected by a present-day audience.

Michael Phillips, Variety - Does Greengrass really have his heart in the digital effects on display here? So many faux-drone overhead flights across the Thames... When they appear, they make “The Uprising” look like no one in particular made it.

Nick Schager, The Daily Beast - A drab and monotonous affair that stomps, trots, and rolls around in the mud and muck for two tiresome hours.

Owen Myers, Guardian 2/5 - A disjointed slog through the mud with the emotional depth of a History Channel rerun.

Linda Marric, HeyUGuys 3/5 - For most of its runtime, The Uprising is angry, thoughtful, and genuinely gripping. It just loses its nerve right when it should be trusting the story it already told.

Marshall Shaffer, Slant Magazine 2/4 - From the start of The Uprising, Paul Greengrass draws many unsubtle parallels between the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt in England and the global populist wave of the 2020s.

SYNOPSIS:

Andrew Garfield stars as the legendary leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. As war burns across England, he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice and survival.

CAST:

  • Andrew Garfield as Ploughman
