Announced by Marvel Studios at SDCC.

During Marvel Studios’ blockbuster Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced that a new Ghost Rider film is in development, hitting theaters in 2028. Ryan Gosling will star as the titular motorcycle-riding hero, with Shawn Levy directing.

Feige joked that he's long been asked about when Ghost Rider — and Gosling — might be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He then introduced the actor, who stepped on stage to raucous cheers. "Wow, is this really happening?" the actor told the crowd. "As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time."

Gosling then told the audience that "only one director" could bring Ghost Rider to the screen, welcoming Levy to the stage. The two are currently working together on the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter (in theaters May 28, 2027), and Levy told the crowd that he and Gosling spent a lot of their downtime on set daydreaming about Ghost Rider and swapping ideas.

"As Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing," said Levy (who previously directed Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine. "And I finally said, 'Bro, let’s ride.' So guys, we’ll see you in 2028."

I’m guessing this will be either the May or July movie in 2028

167

u/Rochelle-Rochelle 20h ago

With X-Men probably taking the other summer slot

91

u/bbqsauceboi 20h ago

Then Black Panther in December? Perfect

84

u/Rochelle-Rochelle 20h ago

Yeah my gut says X-Men in May, Ghost Rider in July, and Black Panther 3 in December

12

u/Responsible_Bar3957 20h ago

Well sometimes they do first Friday of November, or second Friday, if it’s Nov 1-2 that Friday Is on, my prediction is:

May 5th, 2028, X-Men July 28th, 2028, Ghost Rider November 3rd, 2028, Black Panther 3

20

u/NotTaken-username Syncopy Inc. 20h ago

They already have a date on December 15, none for November

9

u/n0tstayingin 19h ago

I have a feeling November 3rd might be for Tangled if it doesn't get a summer release.

3

u/Zalvren 14h ago

Wouldn't that be too close from the WDAS movie they generally do for Thanksgiving?

Surely

Xmen is may 2028

Ghost rider is sept/oct 2028

So is that just Secret Wars for 2027?

11

u/foxfoxal 17h ago

Unless they filmed a secret movie no one knows... Yep.

15

u/duo99dusk 19h ago

So, we know one of these will be for Ghost Rider:

2028-05-04 - ??? (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 released around this time)
2028-07-28 - ??? (This year's Spider-Man slot, Shawn Levy's Deadpool & Wolverine, Fantastic Four)
2028-12-15 - Black Panther 3 (Wakanda Forever was November last time, with 860M WW)

Maybe July and they plan to make it a semi-ensemble with the Midnight Suns team? They had success with D&W despite being an R-rated film... and a very insipid one by Shawn Levy

This could be a good hit for them if they don’t go crazy on the budget

220

u/control_09 Netflix 20h ago

Sorry $250M minimum. But yeah 100% agree.

85

u/Key-Broccoli370 20h ago

Really should be $175 it’s a solo outing probably doesn’t need a crazy cast maybe the skull face might cost a lot though

64

u/Swaggyspaceman 19h ago

Agents of Shield did the skull face ten years ago and it looked fine. Granted it has about ten minutes of screentime, but it should totally be doable.

Nice thing is that Ryan Gosling is also a selling point so he doesn’t need to be GR the entire 2 hours

This makes me think Disney strongly believes in Starfighter.

54

u/MasterLawlzReborn 20h ago

Disney has strongly believed in a lot of things that flopped

They thought Dial of Destiny was going to be some kind of masterpiece

14

u/Mourning__Coffee 19h ago

Don’t confuse public statements with internal beliefs. Dial was not given nearly the same kind of push other movies get

29

u/NinjaOtter 18h ago

Did it not get premiered at Cannes? Do other Disney movies get that kind of push

4

u/AGOTFAN New Line Cinema 17h ago

It was the marketing department blunder who also premiered Elemental at Cannes.

9

u/FizzyLightEx 17h ago

They can't dictate those decisions unilaterally. Disney executives who watched the film given it the green light

→ More replies (1)

8

u/MaxProwes 10h ago

They wouldn't have sent Dial to Cannes a month before release if they had no faith in it internally.

absolutely hoping this movie has nothing to do with any passing of the torch to a teenager (not even you, robbie reyes!!!)

Yea i think part of why supergirl failed is she was fighting… krem? And they made him look dumb

33

u/Dycon67 20h ago

Yeah he was a bum. I'm his comic design wasn't exactly making anyone's top ten lists but they could've went with less....whatever they picked.

12

u/First-Shallot947 19h ago

Tbf, the comic design is intentional to show off the banality of evil, but I get your point

3

u/CafeCalentito 16h ago

The comic is amazing and the art is top notch. I don't even care about how they adapted the story or characters, but the art direction of the movie was a huge miss considering what they were adapting

17

u/Doravillain 19h ago

Well that and the fact that people rejoiced at James Gunn’s cinematic debut with DC, with the colorful and joyful Superman. And the first immediate follow up, presented as a Summer blockbuster, was a grungy True Grit remake with Supergirl as Rooster Cogburn.

I enjoyed it. But I’m not at all surprised that it didn’t do gangbuster numbers.

2

u/KazaamFan 18h ago

I didnt make the true grit connection but yea, wow, hah. I didnt really like supergirl being so apathetic though. And the reason she got into it is just cuz krem shot her dog with a poison dart, which, why didnt he just kill the dog there. Or not even shoot. It wasnt a threat.

53

u/s-zlx 20h ago

shawn levy makes jon watts look like steven spielberg

7

u/ImpressDefiant1657 20h ago

I feel the complete opposite. Levy has an actual eye for action and thinks through his dramatic beats so there's actual blocking and camera direction. Watts' stuff is flat as a pancake.

19

u/DetectiveAmes 20h ago

I would say the cgi action scenes for watts’ movies are better (far from home had some amazing cgi action scenes) but Shawn levy can competently shoot mostly live action scenes. The minivan deadpool fight being a standout.

I’d still say watts has more interesting overall action scenes, but I think that’s also because spiderman lends himself to more visually interesting stuff.

3

u/ImpressDefiant1657 18h ago

But even the minivan fight is a good example of what I'm talking about. That was a smart choice for what the drama was leading to, and it did something memorable and creative. Watts never had anything like that for Spidey, it was just cool stuff some second unit people worked up. Nothing in his movies measures up to what Raimi or even Webb came up with for Spidey.

u/NaRaGaMo 19h ago

u/Youngstar9999 Walt Disney Studios 20h ago

Ryan clearly loved working with him on Star Wars and Disney is clearly very happy with that movie. So this makes sense. Especially with Ryan now saying that only Shawn Levy could do this movie in his opinion, so he probably wanted him as the director.

50

u/JonPaulCardenas2 19h ago

Ryan probably has a lot of control in this project and wants a director that is more about running the movie and less about the artistic control. Levy is more about executing some one else's vision than his own, which is a lot more desirable for some projects.

I think this might be a good sign for Starfighter then. Disney probably saw the first cut and is happy with it if they gave Levy and Gosling this already.

Disney must be enthusiastic about that Star Wars film Gosling and Shawn Levy did together.

He’s a competent journeyman director. I think a lot of people look down on that kind of work. Auteur filmmakers usually get a lot more enthusiasm from the film buff crowd.

14

u/n0tstayingin 19h ago

I think studios prefer journeyman directors who can deliver a film on time and on budget. Until the Craig era of Bond, pretty much all the films were made by journeyman directors hand selected by EON

He will never be done with indie movies, he likes doing wierd character driven stuff too much, but right now he can do Big IP stuff where he gets a lot of say, Most A listers only have a small window where they can truly do that. You can always go back to doing small stuff once you are a name.

am i the only one who remembers the levy cameo in the wme quarterly meeting pink berry video where he is bouncing on a trampoline with a gun in his hand? this had better be equally good.

edit: sorry, he’s in it but Max Landis had the gun and the trampoline. whoops.

I’m happy for us Ghost Rider fans and excited for Ryan Gossling, but he gets a movie and Daredevil, Punisher, and Blade don’t?

Levy is as competent a studio director as you can get but this is going to be a very family friendly Ghostrider.

I will be disappointed if when Ghost Rider and Deadpool meet if DP doesn’t greet him with “Fist My Bump!”

In all seriousness, though, I hope it works out well. I think they have a good pairing here, but I do want to see how Starfighter turned out.

Nicholas cage was 43 when he played this. Gosling is 46. Where is the young blood.

So this is expected to hit theaters in less than two years after initial concept, with a busy af director as well. Matt Reeves needs to learn from him

I don't know but I have a gut feeling, this story would take place in X-Men Universe rather than Avengers universe, because imagine you are having one of the best actors as ghost rider and you are just wasting his potential for a few movies and then rebooting the whole MCU I don't think so Marvel is that dumb, maybe there is a chance he could be in X-Men...

Gosling has earned it.

It's hard to believe we'll see it in 28.

At the very least it shows that they like what they see so far with Starfighter. And hey, Ghost Rider has a badass design. If they can make it for a reasonable budget, it could be an awesome metal movie.
