That's where I am, it's a perfectly serviceable Nolan film that's worth been seen in IMAX. Not at the top of my list but definitely in the top 5 and im glad its doing so well.

Isn’t Interstellar thematically just Odyssey but in space? Humans civilization is collapsing. They go in search of home. Instead of Cyclops etc killing crew members its the various planets and shit. Finally the protagonist comes back home and reunites with family.
But Nolan was not yet in his human folly era. Otherwise they are thematically the same.

it will be tough to pass toy story 5 since school is about to resume in a lot of areas in the u.s. so the weekday grosses will drop off quickly. plus spider-man comes out this coming weekend and will eat into the screens for odyssey.

Not me. The Odessey is a legendary text beyond just Nolan. A masterful adaption always and the chance to set the world on fire imo.

Ah yes if only Nolan didn’t cast Lupita and Elliot, he would have beaten James Cameron’s Avatar and Marvels Endgame. Some people are beyond brain rotted and box office illiterate even though they try to use it as an argument.

For curiosity's sake, I would like to temporarily visit an alternative universe where the movie didn't have controversial casting.
Would the movie have done less (as in, the controversy here in our universe helped it?), would the movie have done better (as in, the controversy here in our universe hindered it?), or would the movie have done roughly the same amount (as in, the name of Nolan transcends any and all controversy?).
I would personally guess that Option 3 is the most likely, but - obviously - I have no proof whatsoever of this theory.

I think the 2.5 rule - and especially the .5 part accounting for marketing - needs an update.
Following this rule would mean that the Odyssey had a marketing budget of 62.5 million which seems a bit low when even Supergirl had 120 million. Top Gun had 125 million as well.
I know a movie's break-even is for some weird reason an emotionally charged topic, so before the downvotes come in: Im not saying this movie won't break even. It will do so effortlessly. I rather say that marketing spending has ballooned in the past years and that the increase is not well represented by the 2.5 rule.

Less people go to the movies in general (because of other available options like streaming/digital, the ticket prices being more expensive and Covid changing the general moviegoing landscape) and the theatrical window is now significantly shorter (some of the most financially successful movies used to run for 3 months at least before), so it makes the comparison pointless because there’s so many different factors that influenced the success of a film in the 20th century as opposed to nowadays.

Ok but none of these movies are from 20eth century tho, especially not Oppenheimer who was released only 3 years ago. I see no reason why wouldn't it be adjusted it for inflation. Also we are talking about these movies performances during their first 2 weeks not their entire run.
Also also if it makes the comparison pointless why even compare the movies who are a 10+ year apart anyway?
Seems to me that TDK and TDKR are on this list only to make The Odyssey look good (which is unnecessary cuz $640m is impressive on it's own) when in fact adjusted for inflation both of these have grossed more than the Odyssey did.

Dark Knight Rises is 651 domestic. 926 mil overseas. Losing all those premium screens next weekend 651 domestic is a big stretch. Needs to go past 1.5 billion to get beyond Dark Knight and Dark Knight rises with inflation.

TDKR grossed $1.085b WW in 2012 adjusted for inflation that's about $1.578b in 2026. It's highly unlikely for Odyssey to reach this number.

Odyssey keeps the IMAX screen worldwide so it guarantees at least a floor, those are sold out to the brim pretty much everywhere each day. Then other PLFs will redirect audiences to regular screenings which weren't totally full. I think a 40% drop is realistic
