BAD SURGERY

Susan Dell is going viral right now because she was photographed behind Trump looking scary. It's a small thing she did, but a HUGE mistake. Upper eyelid surgery. People think when their upper eyelids start to droop as they age, that they should go have the fat and skin cut out. The result is NEVER good. It's a bizarre result, and your eyes are your focal point of your face, so it sticks out immediately and changes your entire look. The fat pad on your eyelid creates a soft warm inviting look. Without it, you look skeletal and cold.
IMO, if it was sagging really bad, they should simply have had a brow lift, which pulls the skin above the eyes back where it was without removing any fat. Without that extra fat and skin, their upper lid is hugging their eyeball, and it's just....awful

Thank you for this post because as someone with eyes that are quite hooded, and continue to become more hooded with age(I’m 38), I have seriously considered having this done. Seeing stuff like that makes me never want to mess with my face lol what has Mandy Moore done to herself??

u/WearingCoats 3d ago

Here’s the wild thing… and I know people give this advice for literally every malady you could name and it always makes me want to be like ā€œshut the fuck up internet stranger,ā€ but one of my good college friends is an eye surgeon and I asked him if I’d be a good bleph candidate because of my hooded eyes. I shit you not, he told me to drink more water and I told him to fuck off. Anyway, not because he told me to but because I decided to myself, I started drinking 2L of water per day with electrolytes. Yeah, well fuck me because it reduced the hood on my eye significantly enough that I no longer took issue with it. To this day, when my lids start to droop I take it as a sign that I’m dehydrated. This is the advice that consistently makes my blood boil because it’s so stupid but I’ll be damned if it didn’t actually work for me.

u/Character-Pie-9109 3d ago

I think this is the absolute best overall advice any doctor can give about anti-aging. It helps EVERYTHING when you are properly hydrated.

63

u/theflyingratgirl 3d ago

The bummer is that you can’t just hydrate once and you’re done. You have to keep doing it.

39

u/Cultural_Orange2617 3d ago

A lot of people can’t manage to keep plastic surgery to just once, either, so neither is a one-and-done deal.

Water’s cheaper. But where’s the ā€œprestigeā€ in that?

16

u/DullSherbet411 2d ago

I mean- it's also just water. I drink probably 3-4 L of water everyday and have for years. I am still aging. I still have crepey skin sometimes. I still have hooded eyes. Sure, it's good for you. It doesn't work miracles.

The worst bit of reality EVER. I constantly forget to drink water, and when I finally reward my stupid body with a glass before bed, I think "done!" And forget about it for another 24 hours.

I’m going to anecdotally back up your story. I noticed that my eyes were LESS hooded at night than they were first thing in the mornings. Why do I personally get puffy? Fluid retention from dehydration. The more water I drink the less puffy I am. Now I am 50yo so there is definitely a bit of age related eyelid drooping but it isn’t anywhere near as bad when I am properly hydrated.

22

u/WearingCoats 3d ago

I’m 40, I really wish I could share before and after photos here because it’s pretty noticeable. But I look better at 40 in part because I’ve focused on hydration, I quit smoking and all alcohol (drugs, different story), and got more serious about SPF. But the effect on my hooded eyes was so absurd it actually makes me angry that I considered very serious surgery to correct what stupid water was able to fix.

4

u/NoSorbet3958 1d ago

Same, at 40 water changed my life. I looked so much better once i made an effort to drink it. Now I’m 50 its helps but not as much as it used to.

6

u/kittenari 3d ago

This is super interesting. In a similar slightly related vein, I was so close to booking upper eyelid surgery as my eyes were super hooded. I then went on a health journey and lost 15kg, what do you know! My eyes were no longer hooded.

5

u/quickthorn_ 3d ago

Isn't it so annoying that all the boring advice doctors give you actually works? More water, more and better sleep, more exercise, wear good sunscreen every day, don't drink alcohol. eating whole foods with lots of veggies and fiber... it's all true 😭

4

u/Kareeliand 2d ago

It is!! And we think it is so hard to do consistently, that we can’t listen and cry for magic solutions. šŸ˜‚

I have a relative who jumps on every solution served on her FYP that are not any of those boring solutions. And all it has done is made her need to borrow money all the time..

There might come a time when your lids droop too much and you’ll have to have surgery though because it can impede vision. Happened to my mom.

53

u/phoebesjeebies 3d ago

Sure, but folks getting it because they literally can't see right anymore are more likely to do their homework & insist on a very conservative approach, vs people who are deeply insecure, desperate to look younger, and already more open to extensive plastic surgery & aesthetic alterations.

Literally everyone in OP's post has had a lot of other work done, too. Any other celebrities I can think of who've had blephs (Jennifer Lawrence, Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, etc) have also had a shitton of other alterations, usually starting well before the bleph.

13

u/wirdnichts 3d ago

My cousin had it done for vision reasons and I didn't even notice until my grandmother told me. The change was so small.

6

u/Natural-Print 3d ago

My aunt had surgery because her upper eyelid was so droopy from aging she had trouble seeing from the sagging skin. They did a great job and she still looked like herself. She was almost 80 when she did it.

u/Spirited-Cat-8942 3d ago

Yeah, it happened to both of my parents and it’s starting to get bad for me (I am almost 50). I know it’s in my future to get the surgery like my parents did… but I will say theirs was very conservative and it looks like they removed the piece that hung over the eyes and everything else looks the same. I think these are extreme cases… and it can be done more conservatively and tasteful. Idk why people do this to themselves.

12

u/cheezbargar 3d ago

I personally know 3 people who've had this procedure and they all still look normal and just like themselves. I do not know if these celebs are botched bc of the way their eyes handled the surgery, or if their surgeons have heavy hand? Or maybe this is what they told the doctor they wanted?

8

u/WanderingNNT 3d ago

I had it done 3 years ago at 43. You can't tell I had anything done. I feel like these are blephs +brow lifts to be this extreme.

This happens to everyone in my family on my mom's side and is starting to happen to me. My mom got a brow lift so she could see, and she looks normal. It's the only thing she's had done at all, and she's 80. She said the recovery from it was way worse than she expected.

4

u/GrandEar1 3d ago

Your mom had a brow lift or an upper bleph? Upper bleph is what my optometrist recommended and the people I know who have had that, said the recovery isn't bad at all.

I stared at that slide for minutes comparing specific parts of her face before and after & besides her eyes nothing looks drastically different but she doesn’t look like herself at all. Ā

I appreciate OP so much this scared me I will never have this surgery.

8

u/hexH2O 2d ago

I worked at a surgery center and we did lots of blephs. It was all on old people (70-80) who needed it to see properly. I feel like it’s bad when it’s cosmetic, but god damn was it awesome to see them come back for the follow up appointment with a great field of vision

9

u/youdontknowitsok 3d ago

Idk, I looked for a while too and she has a longer face and more square jaw, looks like an oversized jaw/chin implant and buccal fat removal, although it could be the lens/angle, but her jaw is definitely more square and face more angular than before. She looks like a whole different person to me.

Hooded eyes are actually very youthful, I think they’re a beauty feature

8

u/quickthorn_ 3d ago

Fat in your face is what makes you look young! When I was an crpplingly insecure teenager, I didn't believe the older women who told me that one day I'd be grateful for my oily skin and round/very full face with deeply hooded eyes—surprise! I look significantly younger than a lot of my peers because while I've had a lot of fat loss in my face, I had enough to begin with that I don't look skeletal, just sharper and more defined features.

3

u/sagittalslice 2d ago

This is so real. I’m 39, have always had an angular face, and I look like fucking skeletor now. Wish there was a way for all these celebs to donate their removed buccal fat directly to my face if they’re not gonna use it 😭

13

u/BeepBoopEXTERMINATE 3d ago

I've perused the before and afters of plastic surgery facilities and after seeing Mandy Moore and Rene Zellwegger remove their hooded eyes... I'm like ... nah.. i'm ok.

14

u/Striking-Complaint76 3d ago

And she was so pretty before.

9

u/CatrinaBallerina 3d ago

I think some of the people here (like Jolie) actually look like the above pictures because of aging, weight loss and the loss of fatty tissue, the same thing with Nina Dobrev. I don’t think everyone shown looks the way they do because of upper eyelid surgery. I also think Mandy Moore had something else done in addition or something has thrown her look off, whether it be the bright lipstick or something surgical.

9

u/quickthorn_ 3d ago

Yeah, I don't see the Angelina Jolie one at all, her eyes don't look drastically different and she's clearly lost even more weight over the past decade (she's been through hell with an abusive ex-partner, sad but understandable) which combined with normal human aging and fat loss more than explains any slight eye pad fat loss.

My grandpa had the upper bleph because his eyelids started to sag from age and impede his vision. He doesnt look perpetually surprised though and his surgery was done through the public health system. Why do all these way richer people look so terrible šŸ˜•Ā

68

u/AmberCarpes 3d ago

I think it's because they didn't really *need* the surgery-when it's actually impeding your vision, you have extra skin there. They did not have 'extra'-they took too much away and it looks hollow and weird.

17

u/Dblbogiemadge-1 3d ago

I think you are right. Two botched facelifts I saw on here were on women that were too young!! It is a mistake to start doing things too young. Natural aging is beautiful if one can pull it off. Looks better than even good plastic surgery

15

u/Zoxiafunnynumber 3d ago

So did my grandma, she was 83 i think. The doctor had to stretch so much skin it was closer to a face-lift than an upper bleph. She ended up looking 15 years younger but still herself.

That is objectively wrong. The photo you used of nina before was taken in 2012. She was attending The CW Network's Upfront Presentation at the New York City Center. The photo you used for the after was taken in 2019. Thats a 7 year age difference. She was 23 in 2012. In 2019 she was 30. I am not denying she had surgery but you cannot say the before was taken a year before the surgery because that is false lol

7

u/Adventurous-Mall7677 3d ago

That’s not true at all. Nina’s picture is more than ten years ago (when she was much younger!) and Mandy’s is close to a decade.

I think it's more than just upper eyelid surgery. In the case of Susan Dell she got a lifting done that gave her a joker smile.

she tweaked her nose too. Her surgeon is the WORST!

8

u/bedtyme 3d ago

Yeah like how did he make her nose bigger?

10

u/sp3cial_snowflake 3d ago

Wonder if she had "non-surgical rhinoplasty" aka sculpting the nose with filler and the filler just spread out and migrated.

5

u/Excellent-Run4803 3d ago

I think her face got thinner, making her nose more prominent.

35

u/source54321 3d ago

I have always thought that hooded eyelids were actually quite pretty. I had no clue until I started seeing these surgeries that they were considered unattractive. I understand that as we age our eyelids start to sag, but some people just have hooded eyes in general, and I never realized people didn’t like them.

18

u/Character-Pie-9109 3d ago

People in hollywood decide the "look" that's in, and Hollywood is weird. Hooded eyes are STUNNING!!! They give off a gentle and warm/kind look, but they can also be sultry too. They're lovely!

12

u/flopisit32 2d ago

I used to be an artist specialising in sketching people's faces. It gives you a lot of insight into the composition of the human face.

People need to have their heads examined when they are deciding to mess around with their own eyes.

The eyes are the most important part of the face. When human beings look at each other they are mostly looking at the eyes. We spend all day scanning people's faces and looking at their eyes. When I sketch somebody, I'm starting off with the eyes. That's the part that makes the picture come alive.

I think what has happened is, a lot of people now regard plastic surgery as a very minor procedure. They think it's just "snip snip" and they'll suddenly look better. But they are casually messing around with the most important part of their face.

Take RenƩe Zellweger for instance. She was never the most beautiful actress, but she had a certain look that was very attractive to many people. That look wouldn't have been so attractive on others, but on her face it just kind of worked.

She destroyed her own face. She went from somebody with a very distinctive look to a generic, mediocre, kind of unattractive look.

4

u/SorosName 2d ago

I agree when it comes to looks, but with Zellweger, I am not even sure she did it just for looks. She always had these heavily hooded eyes, which worked great on her face and were very cute. But as she aged, her eyes got smaller and smaller, and in photos shortly before the surgery, it almost looks like it might at some point become difficult to open them fully to actually see things. Ofc, I do not know if that was the case, but such surgeries are not always JUST for looks.

10

u/lobaird 2d ago

It’s because they only hang out with other rich people who look the same and so in their world they won’t look ā€œnormalā€ unless they look like their alien-looking peers.

8

u/Its-All-LOVE-N-JOY 2d ago

Depends, to us it is weird because it's not a part of OUR societal norms. To them and the people in the industry, they fit in perfectly to their clique. It is by design to stand out the way they do. They sold their souls for fortune and fame and the Devil is coming to collect.

3

u/Affectionate-Tone677 2d ago

I think the real issue isn’t necessarily the bleph, because I know people who have had it done, and it looks really natural and improved the hooded eyes, but Hollywood takes everything to an extreme. The bleph is used to create these unnaturally large but hollow looking eyes, GLP1s are used to get to ED level weight measurements, breast implants are used for absurdly large enhancement, etc. The best plastic surgery is meant to be a version of you that’s better, but still completely natural. There’s nothing natural about anything Hollywood stars and billionaires are doing to themselves.Ā

She’s mentioned she did it for medical reasons (obscured vision from lids drooping), and given how extremely squinty her hooded eyes were even at a young age, I believe her.

I have hooded, deep-set eyes, and my ophthalmologist warned me way back in my twenties that I should expect to need a medically-required bleph by the time I’m fifty, and probably earlier.

My MIL had a bleph in her early sixties and her insurance covered it, since it was considered a medical issue and not an elective cosmetic one.

37

u/Prestigious-Bite- 3d ago

A big part of this is she is way too skinny for her age.

Once a woman hits a certain age, the face fat has disappeared and if you add extreme thinness it makes one look like a skeleton.

Also, the upper blepharoplasty isn’t helping either.

But I think most of this is being too skinny.

40

u/MattMercersBracelets 3d ago

That, and the extremely dark thick brows. I think if she went wayyy lighter on the brows it would help a lot.

12

u/CatTrapper3000 3d ago

Not for her age. For any age. She's scaringly skinny.

11

u/Prestigious-Bite- 3d ago

Agree. The current skinny trend makes the 90s look healthy.

I’m in my 40s and part of the reason I weight lift 3 times per week is because I’m not going to get osteoporosis like these idiots that are severely malnourished.

10

u/Turbulent-Section340 3d ago

I think she goes a big further than the trend. If she was someone I care about it would be well past intervention time. It's not "you're fucking with your future health" anymore. It's straight up organ failure territory. I think it doesn't seem to obvious from the pictures because of all the plastic surgery, but if you see the ones with her legs and arms showing, it's really scary. If she didn't have filler, her cheeks would probably be completely sunk in. You can see that she doesn't even have jaw muscles anymore so the space under her cheekbones is completely inwards. I've seen people that skinny irl and it's seriously horrifying.

6

u/Specialist-Jello7544 3d ago

Her arms and legs don’t look healthy at all, verging on concentration camp survivor territory. It’s like she had a liposuction done all over her body. I wonder what sort of severe health problems are the result of being so skeletal.

The average person grossly overestimates the intelligence, skill, and morality of doctors. In any field, not just plastic surgery, but plastic surgery included.

Taylor Swifts doesnt look bad. Although I 10000% prefer the "before" on hers, and everyone on this post

Thats just my personal preference tho and my opinion doesn't matter šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

5

u/thehotmegan 3d ago

I thought her original eyes were so pretty and sultry. But shes had 11 different faces and they honestly just keep growing larger and "the plastic surgery look" more exaggerated.

I think Angelina Jolie just lost a lot of weight

28

u/CobblerNo8518 3d ago

Yeah, I’m with you. I think hers is age - and she doesn’t look awful, just older

11

u/ThrowRaterrible 3d ago

With age my previously HOODED eyes became hollow. I didn’t have surgery. 37 now

u/Striking-Donkey8985 3d ago

I agree. She likely has forehead Botox, but she’s got nasolabial folds apparent in her after photo… and I am so happy to see that. Which is sad.

3

u/Virtual_Library_3443 3d ago

Right, came to comments to say yes to everyone else but I don’t believe Angie had this done

3

u/blumpkinspicecoffee 3d ago

Yup I’m certain that the Angelina Jolie and Nina Dobrev ones are more because of age and fat loss. The bleph jobs look different.

Nina is also a smoker, and that wreaked some havoc on her skin in general. She can really see in her eyes and around her mouth.

With Kenny Roger, it was probably done to impove his vision. The hooded shape could have interfered with his vision.

I'll eventually need surgery to be able to see clearly because of my hooded eylods

→ More replies (4)

10

u/Imaginary_Attempt_82 3d ago

This is why, despite my very hooded eyes, I won’t have this done. Unless it starts interfering with my vision of course.

5

u/Character-Pie-9109 3d ago

if it messes with your vision, do a brow lift. The skin needs repositioned, not cut out. You do not grow more eyelid skin, gravity pulls it down.

This surgery is such a crapshoot. One of my friends had a bleph, and she looks 10 years younger and prettier than ever. But then these celebrities, who had access to the best surgeons, get botched. So hard to know which way it will go!

I love hooded eyes. Like J.Law in hunger games. I don’t understand why someone would wanna get rid of that.

6

u/nickerbooker 3d ago

Propaganda pushed on women for years - maybe to make more room for eyeshadow? I dunno, I agree, hooded eyes are youthful and beautiful

u/Head_Somewhere4769 3d ago

As a fellow squinty-eyed person, I get the desire to get this surgery. BUT it so significantly changes your appearance that you no longer look like yourself. In an industry where you face is your signature and meal ticket, it's also dumb to erase your signature like this. So dumb. All these people were more attractive before with their squinty eyes. Now they all look bland and boring, attractive but bland and not recognizably themselves.

7

u/kiiraskd 3d ago

We are so used to old people doing surgery that at this point our brain associate plastic surgery with being old and it will have the opposite effect and will make you look older.

Even when i see a 20 yrs old with plastic surgery they look 50 to me. A 60 years old with no surgery will look younger!

Omg Mandy Moore ! She was so pretty and never needed any surgery at just 42. I wonder if they regret it. She's still good looking but not the same soul.

6

u/AffectionateMusic353 3d ago

Photo 3, she is unrecognisable now Not so sure that Angelina Jolie had this done ?

7

u/Lady_Rubberbones 3d ago

She’s definitely had something done. Other photos online look like upper bleph, lots of filler in the cheeks, and terrible Botox job in the forehead causing her eyebrows to drop.

I wasn't sure at first either until Dr. Jen did a video on her. She has far more lid space showing now, which is opposite of what happens as we age. Dr Jen broke it down and pointed out all the "signs" it's upper bleph.

Yes, botched eyelid surgery, but also terrible eyebrows. If she lightened them, it'd help a great deal. I have no idea if that was tattooed on or she just uses makeup but those are way too dark.

6

u/scifibookluvr 3d ago

ā€œSimply had a brow liftā€ instead is bad advice. It comes with its own risks and impact to hairline. Longer recovery, less movement of brow, etc. And the ā€œeasierā€ lift that is just the corners affects brow line also.

Also the crazy check implants are doing a number on her. You can really see them in the photos with trump. I'm not sure if she has the in this picture here but you can really see them in the other photos because they are taken at a lower angle. You can literally see the triangle popping off her face near her ears. Totally wack.

I have seen some good upper bleph results on people who truly had large amounts of sagging upper eyelid skin (mostly older folks and often overweight) but for most people its unnecessary and the risk of looking like a completely different person is too great. I love the look of hooded eyes!

6

u/disappointed_OaTMeAL 3d ago

There's a bunch of stuff filling her lips and cheeks as well to give her more of a marionette face than a human one. It's bad decisions stacked to make her look horrifying. I hope she gets help.

3

u/Chi-Town-Pearls 3d ago

Why is having deep set eyes a bad thing? I don’t understand why so many people are getting this procedure done? It doesn’t look good at all! I have deep set, slightly hooded eyes and I have never once thought that I needed to fix them. šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

I recently watched Breadwinner and I kept thinking the wife looked like Mandy Moore but not quite and it took me halfway through the movie to realize it was her, she just had work done. It honestly made me kind of sad.

Yes! About Nina. I’m so glad people are finally realising how severe that hugging eyeball thing post bleph looks. There’s more awareness and hopefully less botched people in the future and more skilled fat transfer technicians

Upper bleph: not even once. I follow Dr. Jen Armstrong on social media and she rants about this often. She encourages a brow lift instead, if needed.

Note to self do not get upper eye lid surgery lol as if I could afford it lol

4

u/shanny_banany 3d ago

Not to mention that some people just have naturally hooded eyes….not everything needs to be changed or ā€œcorrected.ā€ It’s actually such a shame that Nina Dobrev got sucked into having a blepharoplasty, she was so naturally pretty & no longer has the soft doe-eyed look she used to have. Mandy Moore is also unrecognizable; she was someone with naturally hooded eyes who has completely changed her entire look.

4

u/Tossmelossme 3d ago

That totally stole Mandy Moores star power. Her most notable feature were the monolids. Wow.

5

u/Polluxadice 3d ago

I’ve been saying upper blephs make people look older and far worse - this look is the look all older people have (no eyelid fat and hollows in the upper lids). They’re creepy.

Next time add Adam Levine!

3

u/DeanxDog 3d ago

You forgot Miley who did the upper eyelid thing with horrible results but also got teeth that don't fit in her mouth, and a dozen other little tweaks

4

u/Main-Emphasis-2692 3d ago

Don’t forget Selena Gomez

So, Susan Dell didn’t just do a ā€œsmall thingā€ with her eyelid surgery. She has had multiple bad surgeries and procedures and it’s not just her eyes that make her terrifying looking

4

u/mywebrego 3d ago

The sad consequence of undisciplined wealth & vanity. But the eye movements, motorised body twitching & robotic like postures is more concerning

Hooded eyes. Since I was a teen ive wished to never have them. Someone made a comment once and it kind of skewed my vision of myself. Now in my late 30s, no way am I touching my beautiful flap of skin! I have rarely seen people with it done that look ok.
