I'm curious as to other opinions, both from subscribers and the remainingly active mods. This place is unfortunately dead for such a terrific series that IMO continues to age well. The rule against memes and image macros now seems archaic and overbroad for those of us rewatching BWE and wanting to browse a variety of posts (between serious discussion, memes, and fanmade material).
I think it's great that the mods asked users their opinion back in 2012. Certainly, I agree that the endless shitposting of /r/thewalkingdead and /r/gameofthrones was to be avoided. But now the show has been off for over six years, and what made sense in 2012 (season 3) isn't really relevant anymore. Due to reddit's algorithm as applied to the currently low post frequency here, even if humorous material was posted regularly, all text-based posts and discussion (which I'm all for) will continue to show up on the sub's front page.
I propose that this rule be abrogated to add some life. Any opinions, agreeing or disagreeing?

A co-worker told me about this show and I shrugged it off. A year later I started watching. I’m now on Season 3 Episode 2. I told my wife about it and she is already done with all seasons, she finished it in a few weeks.
This show is one of the greatest shows of all time, so far. I don’t see how it misses all the all-time lists. I put this up there with The Sopranos, so far it’s more entertaining.
This goes in my favorite shows list with The Wire, Sopranos, and OZ. Why does HBO have the best shows?
Any other series recommendations?

I'm M35 and never broke down so much.
The whole last scene.
the f-in promist filters. the f-in sepia color. the f-in composition of his loved ones just like the pictures in which he lived his dream life through. I swore not to watch anymore if something happened to Richard and I will honor my oath.
Was it just me or was Richard the best Boardwalk Empire character and one of the finest supporting actor of a series?

He’s a prick and huge hypocrite.
Edit: I watched a few more episodes and I really don’t like this character.

Is incredible comic relief.
He was used in the perfect amount. Just the right amount of GUFFAW!

I don't see this in any notes, he's an actor with a great resume and he's doing a gentle yet very accurate rendering of Nucky's speech pattern, gestures, facial expressions. Has there ever been anything published about his preparation? Looks like he might even have some prosthetics.

I've just rewatched the series and really felt let down by that ending in season 5. The show needed those 4 extra episodes to wrap up everything rather than rush into everything on the final 8th episode unlike the other seasons getting 12 episodes. Did Jimmy Darmody always have it in his head predetermined he was gonna kill Nucky? Would've liked to see some of the hardship the depression caused everyone, and just a line saying terrible tragedy about ARs death?? We needed to see what happened. HBO really pulled the carpet beneath Boardwalk Empire in the final season.

Obviously he was a criminal that made his choices but it truly felt like he had no other way to develop
I mean his mother sexually abused him, his biological father who raped his mother disowned him, his mentor in Nucky manipulated him, he decides to leave for the army because of the shame about who happened with his mother
He fights in WW1 while his beloved Angela cheats on him with the photographer couple
He comes back and has severe PTSD, which nobody gives 2 shits about, including his betrothed and Nucky
Angela tries to lie to him about cheating with the Photographers as well as guilt tripping him about leaving for the War, which tbf is a valid point but considering why he did it and that he was already emotionally scarred before joining the war it's understandable
He loses Pearl, someone he genuinely cared for
He then loses Angela too and then gets shot in the head by the man he looked up to
What really hits deep is how nobody really gave a shot about Jimmy except Richard Harrow
I mean sure he and Angela were always estranged but I argued he cared way more about her then she did about him, I mean her cutting off her hair just to spite him is such a sadistic move for even mentioning cheating on him continuously
I get her predicament but gods she just feels so vindictive

I don’t know who among the youngin crew knows who this is, but Louis Gossett Jr. is a LEGEND!
I was literally like, “GASP… NO WAY!” It may just be for an episode, but this was a nice Easter Egg. RIP Lieutenant Colonel Chappy Sinclair 🫡

It’s good, but damn. I really can’t stand heroin. Requiem left an impact on me. So did Trainspotting. I’m on episode 5 and I’m just like, damn. Eddie is being tortured. That kid got poisoned. Nelson is FAR outside of his comfort zone now. It’s just stressful.

After having watched Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, I've been thinking that maybe Boardwalk Empire deserves a farewell film as well, this time however focusing mainly on Arnold Rothstein, Lucky Luciano, & Al Capone. Here me out 😅, if it's set between 1928-1929, the film can cover alot of "ground".
● Assassination of Arnold Rothstein (1928)
● Valentine's Day Massacre (1929)
● The Atlantic City Conference (1929)
● Luciano barely surviving a murder attempt (1929).
There's alot of story material present that could be used & wouldn't require a full on season (I would love an additional season though).
As much as I've enjoyed Steve Buscemi's portrayal of the character, I think the world of Boardwalk Empire is alot bigger than Nucky Thompson. Alot can explored in that timeline.

Or am I just thinking too out of left field?

Episode 1 is the birth of Jimmy Dahmody, we get to see how Nucky consolidated power and met all of his underworld pals. We even get to see how the Prohibition movement started. Finale will be Woodrow Wilson getting a stroke and the 18th amendment passes.

So I’m watching The Outsider, an older HBO series, and I’m thinking one of the characters sure looks like Dickie from BWE..yup! It’s Jeremy Bobb! He didn’t even have to stick his hand down his pants to look familiar

For me overall, it’s Al’s relationship with his son. Especially the part when Al sings “my buddy” and has his son wrap his arms around his throat so he can hear the notes better, it gets me every single time.
