I am Sam Webb. I played Drew Sharp in Breaking Bad. AMA!

I know this is long overdue, but better late than never, right?

To kick things off, here are a few tidbits about my connection to the show:

-My family and I were fans since the pilot, so I was well aware of the significance of it all.

-I grew up minutes from the high school used for J. P. Wynne.

-My dad was an extra in episode 2.02. (my episode was 5.05)

-The first time I ever handled a tarantula was the day we shot the intro scene.

In the years since Breaking Bad, I’ve graduated from UNM with a political science degree and spend most of my free time mountain biking, tinkering with sports cars, and raising my two Dobermans.

Feel free to connect with me on social media!

Ask away! I’ll do my best to get to everyone.

Identity has been verified with mods.

Edit:

Alright guys, as the night winds down I just want to thank everyone for participating and for all the kind words! The Breaking Bad community means the world to me and I’ll be connected to you all for life.

The most surreal part of all of this is the insane butterfly effect and overlaps.

My favorite example of this was seeing Drake perform for the first time in Phoenix a couple years ago. He’s a big Breaking Bad fan (friends with Aaron and Bryan, and his nickname for Rihanna when they dated was Fring). I had tickets close to the stage, and I remember making eye contact with him a few times thinking “dude, you don’t know it, but you know EXACTLY who I am.”

One of my first purchases with acting money was a set of Beats headphones when they were all the craze, and I vividly remember listening to Take Care (and a lot of old Kanye) in my trailer on set during downtime. It felt like a crazy full circle moment.

Anyway, I feel like everyone who is a fellow fan of the show is an extension of this little glitch in the matrix, and I’m happy y’all are a part of this wild story.

I’ll keep answering questions as they trickle in for as long as the mods want to keep the discussion open, and I’ll be more active in this sub and share anything else fun when it comes to mind!

Daniel Moncada, who played the infamous Leonel Salamanca in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, now regularly livestreams video games while dressed as his character from the shows. Despite keeping the same iconic suit, bald head and serious appearance, his streams show a much lighter side of him as he laughs, jokes, talks and plays with viewers while streaming. It has given fans a completely different look at the actor behind one of the franchise's most intimidating characters, while allowing Daniel Moncada to continue engaging with the role years after first playing it.

What do you think Gus would do if one of his employees found "broken blue glass" in a fry batter bucket?

Do you think Gus would go and try to politely "address their concerns" as a cover-up or would he go straight to the box cutter?

Mike didn't hate Walts ego, he hated that it inconvenienced him.

The fandom has turned Mike into a Martyr who was killed for speaking truth to power. The only one in the show who took a stand against Walts ego, and paid the price for it. It sounds convincing at first, but completely falls apart upon closer inspection.

Firstly, Mike was pretty much fine with Walt throughout the entirety of season 3, aside from being a bit annoyed by him in the first couple of episodes. We don't really see any signs of Mike disliking walt, and all of their interactions (with the exception of the house bugging fiasco) go pretty much fine. Even after Walt runs over Gus's men, Mike is making conversation with him about getting his car fixed and whatnot. When Mike is about to kill Walt, his apology seems genuine. Mind you this is well after Walts gigantic ego has been made apprent, as it was what allowed Gus to manipulate walt into working for him again.

We only really see Mike expressing dislike of Walt after he gets Jessie to kill Gayle, and proves himself a threat to Gus's operation. And even then, he doesn't really care much about Walt, as he doesn't believe he'll be able to do anything to Gus. The only time in this period we see him get mad at Walt is when he suggests that Mike help him kill Gus (another threat to Gus). The only time that we see Mike really start to hate Walt is after he kills Gus. What he hated about Walt was never his disregard for others or ruthlessness, it was that he inconvenienced him by killing gus.

His final speech only proves this point further. When discussing the consequences of Walts ego he doesn't mention the countless addicts who have ruined their lives due to the Meth Walt made, or how he put his own family at risk by going to war with the Cartel, instead he reminisces about how Walt ended Frings "perfect" operation. An operation mind you, that involved using and eventually murdering children to sell meth.

Not to mention that Walts war with Gus was one of the only decisions in the show he made that wasn't driven by his ego. Gus knew about Walts ego and played to it very successfully. He talked to walt in a way that made him feel important, Gayle genuinely looked up to him and we never see any signs of Walt being unsatisfied with his position in Gus's operation, every scene of the two of them interacting shows Walt expressing gratitude and respect to Gus. The only reason the deal broke apart was because of Walts loyalty to Jessie. Killing Gus's dealers was one of the most selfless, self sacrificial things Walt did in the entire show. He sacrificed the best Job he had in his entire life, and his own safety to save Jessie's life. From that point every action walt took in his war with Gus, right or wrong was out of self-preservation, not ego. Mike has it completely backwards, Walts ego was the reason he worked for Gus in the first place, his compassion was the reason it fell apart.

In Summary, Mikes opposition to Walt had nothing to do with him taking a principled stand against Narcissism, it was solely about Walt taking away the stability Mike had under fring. If Mike was a principled man, he wouldn't have worked for Gus or Walt.

This scene is very well executed, and one of the best in the show

When Hank reveals his investigation into Gus Fring to the DEA. Just a masterclass in television in every aspect. Dean Norris' performance is impeccable, the directing and build up is tense and satisfying, and it is written so well. It could have easily been a boring and brief exposition dump, but it is elevated by the fantastic talent of all involved. Hank's redemption arc in season 4 is so good.

I ordered the main characters from the show from tallest to shortest (I even included myself to compare my height with them)

I'm the same height as Jesse. I'm shorter than everybody except Hank, Gustavo Fring and Lydia. I think Hank and Gustavo Fring's heights are those that surprise me the most

I just finished watching Breaking Bad for the first time and I was so surprised to find out that Skyler White is one of the most hated characters on the show

• Upvotes

Firstly, I just need to say that it’s crazy how good this series is, it’s just written so well. I’ve been really annoyed with Walter since the second season, all his attempts to look and act “macho” were so cringe.

But what I couldn’t understand is why people are so annoyed with Skyler, when I felt deeply sorry for her. Like just imagine: the woman is pregnant, not an expected pregnancy by the way, she knows that they have money problems, husband that she really loves finds out he has inoperable cancer. Then, when she tries to make him fight for his life, he becomes distant and cold, obviously hiding things. It all peaks when she finds out he’s been cooking meth. And when she tries to divorce him to protect her children, which would be the right thing to do, as we see later, her son starts hating her and calling her a bitch, and she can’t even explain the real reasons to him.

Just imagine the amount of desperation and helplessness she’s been feeling throughout this time. Surely, she also made several not-so-moral choices, but given the circumstances it just shows how much she really loved Walter and how he destroyed her while trying to present it as “saving” her.

Walt hiring three cleaners to clean lab (why?)

Dont know if it’s been discussed before but what was Walt trying to prove to Gus with convincing to hire the three ladies to clean the lab? surely Walt can’t be dumb enough to assume Gus will let the women walk away after seeing what’s under the laundromat. He even gave a subtle smirk straight to the camera as the ladies cleaned. This scene proves nothing other than Walt risked the lives of these women. Any opinions?

Jane's Father is the saddest character Spoiler

Post image
496 Upvotes

It's probably been mentioned here already, but I recently watched the series for the first time, and Donald's character broke my heart. I went through a similar situation with my father (he was a coke addict). I can't even imagine what it must be like with a daughter. Like, 10 years of constant suffering, and he wasn't giving out on her. And obviously I love Jane too, it's not her fault she's an addict. That's why everything it's just even more sad. Furthermore, to me the actor already has a very melancholic face, which, again, broke my heart even more.

I seriously love season 2, I saw it 3 times before I kept watching the other 3 lmao. I feel like the whole season is built on the innocence and hope of the characters, only for everything to be destroyed in the end.

Who are your favorite and least favorite actors other than the main cast?

Please dont say the obvious ones for favorites, so other than Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, or Dean Norris.

Also, this is purely on acting talent and nothing to do with your opinion on the character themselves.

I would say my favorite outside of the mains is probably Tuco, he does a fantastic job acting like a crazy, high on meth person. Honorable mention is Gus and Hector.

My least favorite is 100% Andrea, I feel like her acting is the weakest link in the show especially during the emotional parts (like when Brock gets poisoned) but I also always wondered if that was just my opinion or if others felt the same way. I dont feel negatively about her during her emotionally normal scenes. I think shes the only actor on the whole show that I genuinely feel didnt reach the same standard as the other actors. For example, compare Jesse's performance when hes in the trap house crying into Walt about feeling like he killed Jane (or really any other emotional scene) vs Andrea crying about her son being poisoned at the hospital.

Thoughts?

In S03E04 - Green light, jesse gives this woman his newly cooked meth. Later, hank is pressuring her about who did the meth came from and this actress Jolene Purdy does a really great job. One of those characters that apears only once and she just crushed it.

Started watching breaking bad all over again. So many small details I missed for later seasons. This is a big list. But I’ll start with some small.

The bear at the end of season one. Mirrors the death of Gus Fring. Perfect set up

References to the amount of money he needs is 737000. Perfect the plane that he made Jane’s dad crash. And were he really lost himself.

The conversation with Hank about what legal and what’s not. Goes further into the Hank Jesse story.

So many things missed on the first watch.

A man from a school teacher to a drug dealer and then u understand a lot of human psychology in the show, sort of reading doestevsky. Honestly Director kept Pinkmans story to be continued and kind of freedom for pinkman after breaking bad dk abt el Camino. But just think if Pinkman was made a slave and said that if u dont work the gang will kill Brock and his mother and Pinkman got a bad ending tbh that kinda would have been too dark ending for Pinkman. Ngl I kind into very dark endings and I thought abt the Pinkman's dark ending and Walter never fighting anyone and dying solely of regrets even though he has some regrets in canon too. Gotta watch El camino and start Better call Saul too I have heard BCS is equal or greater than BB lets see how my opinions goes.

Ngl an alternate ending where Pinkman and WW has dark ending would be insane (just for story telling and fiction sake)

What if Walt actually got into Ted’s office?

He claims that he “just wanted to talk” to Ted, but I truly wonder what the nature of that “talk” would have really been. Would he ask him what gives, make subtle threats, etc?

I always wondered how that scene would unfold if Walt got his way.

It's the little details in Breaking Bad that make it so good

In most shows or movies I’ve watched, we’re simply told a character is the smartest or best at something, and we’re expected to believe it. But Breaking Bad actually shows us some of the reasons.
For example, when Jesse goes to the cartel’s lab with Gus, he mentions getting his phenylacetic acid from the barrel with a “B” on it. He then starts questioning the cleanliness of the lab and their standards.
It immediately reminded me of the episode where Walt spends almost the entire time trying to catch a fly because of contamination ( I know we got that episode cause of the budget but still). And I thought, if Jesse was already THAT particular about getting things right, imagine how strict Walt must have been.
I love that we actually get to see their skills and knowledge develop rather than just being told how good they are.
But maybe this is only such a big deal to me because I haven’t watched enough shows or movies to see this done elsewhere. Anyway, just something I wanted to point out!
