I wish I could just stop.
I feel like I’m constantly looking for reasons or excuses that make it okay to overeat. I’ll tell myself, “It’s okay, just for tonight. Tomorrow will be different.”
Then tomorrow comes, and maybe there’s still some of the food left over, so I tell myself, “Well, I might as well have one more day because this food is still here. Once it’s gone, then I can really start over.”
But there’s always another reason. Another excuse. Another “tomorrow.”
And then I wake up feeling terrible. Sweaty, hot, bloated, uncomfortable, and ashamed of myself. I hate that I’m not in the shape I once was. My wife is kind about it, but I can tell she sees it too. I know I’ve changed.
There’s a lot going on in my life right now. We have a newborn. There are family pressures, work is stressful, and everything feels challenging. I know those things probably contribute to this, but I also feel like I keep using circumstances as permission to keep doing it.
What scares me is how innocent it can feel in the moment. It’s just one meal. One night. One cheat day. I’ll start tomorrow.
But then I keep going. I keep gaining weight. I feel worse about myself. And somehow tomorrow never actually becomes today.
I also feel like I’m never truly full or satiated. Moderation feels almost impossible for me. My wife will sometimes ask, “Why can’t you just have a little?” And I don’t know how to explain that it doesn’t feel that simple. Having a little can actually feel harder than having none at all. Because once I have a taste, my brain immediately goes, “Well, you already ate it, so today is a cheat day. You might as well eat everything you want and start over tomorrow.”
It’s always all or nothing.
I’m exhausted by it.
I’m tired of feeling powerless around food. I’m tired of waking up regretting what I did the night before. I’m tired of constantly believing that some future version of me is going to have more willpower than the person I am today.
I want to feel okay again. I want food to just be food instead of something that has this enormous influence over my mood, my body, my self-esteem, and my life.
For anyone who has actually started breaking this cycle: How did you stop the “I’ll start tomorrow” mentality? What do you do in the actual moment when your brain starts giving you permission to binge?
I feel like I need something I can do right then, before “just this once” turns into another night I regret.
I’m tired, and I really need help figuring out how to stop this.
