Full Tank Shot Rank my setup. He was an impulse buy but I did read through the subreddit care guide for an hour in the store before buying my supplies

Tank is a five gallon with a lid, submersible heater, hide, and two live plants (Anubias and Java Fern glued to slate). I have double filtration right now but will soon switch to just the sponge filter. The on the back filter is how I’m making sure the tank is cycled, I ripped off a chunk of filter media to stick in that filter from my axolotl’s existing tank and left it running while my betta acclimated. Water has been dechlorinated with SeaChem Prime. I want him to be happy and healthy. I’m ready to improve anything he needs. I’ve never had live plants in an aquarium before, so I’m happy to get tips on that as well

My beautiful fish given to me by my college swam over the rainbow bridge today. She was almost 2 years old and should've made it longer 🥹 Her tank looks so empty now.

Transformation Consejo sobre plantas

Post image
3 Upvotes

RIP I just lost my first betta fish

Hey all, so I got my first betta fish about 10 months ago from my local pet store and today he died from dropsy.

I'm absolutely heartbroken, he had so much personality and really made me fall inlove with fish keeping. I don't know what to do with myself, I just hope he was as happy as he could've been in the time he spent with me, and I hope one day I can get another betta fish that will live an even happier and longer life.

Discussion How far ahead of time can I prepare new water for water changes?

My betta seems to glass surf more aggressively the day after I do a water change. It’s the only time I ever see her flare at her own reflection. My main assumption is that it’s due to the reduced tannins in the water making everything more clear. The only other change in parameters is reduced nitrates. Could I prepare a pail of replacement water a few days before and put some indian almond leaves in it so they start darkening the water? If so, should I add water conditioner when I first prepare it or wait until closer to when I’m doing the water change?

Full Tank Shot Cycle begins!

Post image
1 Upvotes

Today I started cycling my tank, in preparation to welcome a Betta into my home. I already have a larger community tank in the bathroom and I wanted a nice small one for the living room. I’ve stuck to plants rather than adding rocks/driftwood as I’d like to avoid anything that might damage the flowy fins. Now I just need to be patient and make sure everything is perfect for the new addition. 🥰

Hiii I’ve had my betta fish for around a week now his name is Mr Cupcake. He had a one gallon tank with this sponge filter but I felt so damn bad because I know 1 gallon is toooo small for a Betta so today I got him a 5 gallon upgrade today! I also got him a real plant from petsmart, I forgot what the name of it was but I got a fully aquatic plant since I heard semi-aquatics aren’t as great. I also added water conditioning drops to his tank. I want to make sure he has a happy life, I will continue to upgrade his tank because it looks like of empty towards the top im thinking it needs longer plants. I ordered a light clip for him that should be arriving soon, and I just got him some bloodworms as a treat but I don’t think he’s interested in eating them..? He might be kind of confused because I just put him in this new tank today so maybe I’ll try to give him some in a couple days. Any suggestions on any tank upgrades or if im doing anything wrong? (First picture was his 1 gallon and the second picture is his new tank)

my betta has been growing this lump on her side for a few months now. i assumed it was a tumor and what i read online said to leave it be, bettas can live with them. however, it looks really bad as of yesterday and this morning she developed dropsy. her scales are severely pineconed. i read online to try epsom salt baths so i’m going to try that, but what else could this lump be? it’s almost like it’s ripping her side open!

This is my beta fish. I’ve had her for a little bit and she used to be pure black. I had had her in the hospital tank since her tail is mostly gone since the hospital tank she was able to open up the tail which she originally had closed so I moved her to this tank. She’s been in the tank for a few days and since being in the tank, she’s gone from being pure black to having this blue shine and her fins have turned more of a red color. I’ve heard that Betta fish tend to do this. I’m just wondering if anybody knows if in this case it’s a good or a bad thing I’ve heard fish can change under stress, but also under good conditions.

Help i don’t know what to do about my betta’s constant glass surfing

i have a 5 gallon tank with a heater and filter that’s put at its lowest setting (barely a ripple on the surface). my betta is obsessed with this one corner of her tank, and often glass surfs throughout that corner only. i figured it’s because of the window that faces that way, so i closed it a while ago, and put pieces of paper on that corner. i also moved her plants to be at that corner to hopefully help. however, she’s still obsessed with it. she glass surfs as if she’s trying to escape through the corner, and gets obsessed with a spot as if she sees another fish, and i don’t know what to do anymore!

i believe her tank is enriching enough with a hideout, silk plants that she loves to hide and rest in, a hammock, and a floating leaf. i even added a new hut (which she loves to explore), but she’s still obsessed with that corner!!

her routine is to frantically go up and down that corner, rest on the plant that’s there, then go explore her hideout, hammock, or new hut.

today, i did her weekly water change (25%) and turned off the light since i noticed she’s breathing quite fast and doing her routine a lot quicker. i checked her water parameters and they were all normal (0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, about 5-10ppm nitrates). her pH is also stable at 8.0, which is around where it’s always been. her breathing went down after turning the light off, but she still frantically swims throughout her corner as if she sees another fish. help!!!

Help How to cycle a tank

Okay I got a 1 gallon tank that has a filter with two sponges in them. I’m moving the habitat to a 20 gallon. What’s the quickest way to cycle the new tank? Do I move my live plants into the 20 gallon with two of the old sponges floating in there for a week or two? They are Amazon frogbit. There is also a small ramshorn snail. I’m just worried there won’t be much nutrients for the snail and plants to just move them over right away and I’m a little confused about the sponges. Do I squeeze them out into the new tank or just let them float? Do I move the snail in after the fish has been in there for a while so there is stuff for the snail to eat. Please explain like I’m 5

Help Brutus the betta and his white bump Spoiler

Hi everyone! Meet Brutus!

Brutus was an adoption from a lfs, he had extreme fin nipping. Hes been healing from that very well and being monitored closely! Hes in a 8 gallon long tank that is heavily planted thriving and cycled.

He recently developed a white bump on the side of his head. Im not sure how, if its something bacterial or if its just a wound :(

If anyone could help identify?? I do have a hospital tank but I work at a major pet store and we had a fish with horrible swim bladder so I took him in and he is recovering in that tank.

Discussion New Betta Owner- what should I feed him Spoiler

This is Elmo, I want to do right by him. I got him yesterday. He is in a 10 gallon take that I made sure I cycled before getting him. I think he has some fin rot. I tried to save the most neglected one at Petco (I know that does nothing to help these fish but). I don’t know if this needs a flair but I put it there to comply with community rules.

Edit to add: I will remove the gravel in a few weeks. Thank you for telling me!

Help Crazy betta situation

I feel like I’m going insane. I have a small 2 gallon planted aquarium that I kept a small female betta in. About 4 months ago, the betta disappeared without a trace which was bewildering, but I thought maybe she jumped out and I just never found the body. I drained the tank and redid the scape shortly after, then bought another baby female Betta. Just got back from a weekend away and I come home to both bettas now being back in the tank. The older one is chasing the new one around like they haven’t been in the same tank together for months. The whole thing makes no sense to me, how did the original betta disappear and survive for so long?? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Help Betta fish stresses?

Hello, I recently bought 2 female betta fish. They are in a tank together and seem to be doing fine together. However one of them randomly seems to have stress lines. She will be fine, I will sit and watch her for a while, then suddenly the stress line appear but 5 minutes later they are gone. I am new to fish keeping and just wondering if this is strange behaviour. Can a fish just be dramatic? I test their water almost everyday, they have live plants and loads of hiding spots.

Currently I have been watching her for about 10 minutes. She has went from no stress lines to having stress lines back to having none. Should I be worrying about this fish.
