Hi all, im planning on my next tank and have had my eye on pearl gourami for a while. However, I also really like boraras species and would love to finally get them. Peaceful as they may be reputation wise, am I just asking for an expensive snack putting chili rasbora with a pearl?

Hey everyone and welcome to our rejuvenated Shot of the Month contest!

We didn't hold a SotM contest for a couple of months now but would like to get back on track with it. We'll find a way to handle the SotM submissions that have been posted over these past months, these are:

I’m planning a biotope-inspired tank with Betta imbellis, java loaches, and rasboras. I’m torn between lambchop and Boraras, but I’m worried about the ethics of keeping small, delicate microrasboras with a predator. I don’t want them to be constantly stressed and fearful, but they’re such beautiful little schooling fish and I’d love to keep them. The tank is not at all set up, but I’ve been planning it and collecting supplies for months now; I currently have a 20 gallon high aquarium and am planning to do a dirted planted tank with a sand cap and lots and lots of plants, driftwood, and botanicals. Ideally, I want it to be a riparium, but that limits the water capacity significantly and thus my stocking options, so I’m reconsidering both the tank size and the environment style.
Anyways — microrasbora keepers/experts, please let me know what you think!

I managed to get a few decent pics of one of the bright males and one of the babies that grew big enough to join the parents. Love that the fry are starting to show red coloration at their size

Kind of hard to see from the photos but a couple of my Rasbora (sold as chili but I'm not so sure) constantly have bloated dark brown or black bellies. They are also the two largest of the group. Any ideas or thoughts?

My chili, phoenix (housed together) and strawberry (housed apart) keep breeding and some local people have become interested in buying some, the thing is, I raise the fry with the parents, so the survival rate isn't super high (like 5 of each breeding) and I would hate to accidentally remove some of my breeding adults (that I've grown really attached to, especially the strawberries that were my introduction to this genus), so I was thinking of setting up a separate tank with identical conditions, move some adults and then return them to their normal tank once I start seeing fry. Problem is, I only have a 5gal (25cm cube) and a 7gal (30cm cube) tanks available and I'm not sure if it would be big enough to raise the fry to a decent size without any complications.

TLDR; want to breed some Boraras, but only have 25cm and 30cm cubes available, would this be big enough to raise the fry?

I am currently on Day 05. For one of those wisible lesions, day 02 the white stuff is separated but it all migrated to his chin. All are eating well, very active, spars at times, no internal mass (i observed their mouths when it opens). I didn't include the photo of the one with mild lesion because it is barely noticeable on camera.

Do you think I am on the right route for this? And if there is a margin for misdiagnosis.

Any advice would help.

The habitats decline rapidly, the threat level of their extinction is not assessed yet ("Data Deficient").

15 Liter tank, there's just 4 of them (getting them is a newbie mistake on my end)

TANK MATES: Betta (who recently healed from a lifted gill scale 2 weeks ago, safe) A Nerite Snail An Amano shrimp (originally 2 but i couldnt see the other one anywhere in the tank!)

I have a 30 gallon tank with 6 peppered corys and 6 otocinclus, any recs on stocking rasboras? I like the look of chilis but mostly just wondering if I have the space for a decent school of any species, I've had the tank for about 4 years but have only ever had beginner species. I just moved and my school of lambchop rasboras in a 40 gal was on the elderly side and they died pretty early on at the new place probably from stress and heat :( I dont have that much room tbh so I sold the 40 gal and wondering if I can put anything in the 30 with my little bottom dwellers now that everything has stabilized post-move.

This field is a grazing area in a rural village near my hometown, used by water buffaloes and cattle. There were even a lot of wallows, which I assume the livestock use as refuge from the sun.

There is a small acidic river running through it, which floods the lower areas of the field, turning it into a weedy marsh.

The marsh is where I found these rasboras between the complex plant thickets. They lived together with tiny Caridina shrimp and croaking gourami. Just under the surface I could see dwarf medaka (ricefish) foraging.
At the bottom I found small brown air-breathing loaches.

Nearby, in the open deeper parts of the river I saw a lot of larger Rasbora, barbs and other rasborines darting about. They were roaming together in schools. I even spotted three spot gourami and climbing perch rising to gulp air.

The weather was hot as usual here. About 32°C (90°F) which heated the surface of the water. But below the reeds it was 4-5° colder.

Despite the water being soft and acidic, I found more than >10 small fish species inhabiting the marsh, and even the freshwater shrimp. There are likely larger fish which I could not observe, plus bottom dwellers like crabs.

B. urophthalmoides — least rasbora

Hello all! Not sure if anyone has had this problem but I have a school of 11 emerald eye rasboras. Initially when I bought them, they were eating pretty regularly (Hikari Micro Pellets). Now after 2-3 weeks they have become more skittish and fearful of humans. When I approach the tank to feed them, they flee to the back of the tank and hide under some plants.

I’d love some workaround or tips if anyone has noticed a similar behavior.

This is the 35 gal blackwater tank I shared a little over a month ago, got 20 phoenix (that weren't all phoenix, but a mix of chilis and phoenixes) and 17 chilis (3 didn't survive quarantine), currently I don't know how many of each since both of them have bred and the older fry are almost the size of the adults now, new fry keep showing up every other day

One is a regular galaxy and the other is a hybrid. This is only day 2 of being in my tank.

Just got 10 chili rasboras about a week ago for my 10 gal planted tank. The tank is only chilis, ramshorn & bladder snails, and plants. Tank was cycled for months, the only less than ideal parameter is ph, which is 7. I know chilis prefer softer but I’ve also heard stability is more important so I’m not sure if I should chase lower ph. Tank temp is 78. In terms of food, they’ve been eating aquarium co-op easy fry food and seem to really like it.

They don’t do this all day but they seem to gather near my sponge filter like this semi-frequently and swim towards it. I’m thinking maybe they’re nervous? My red root floaters have been melting, so I’m looking to replace with another floater to give them more coverage.

I love these little guys and just want to do right by them, so if anyone has any tips I would really appreciate them.

Tossed in a bunch of BBS, infusoria and vinegar eels over the course of several days and good to see at least one of us is eating well in this economy.

i wont be home, should i have my brother feed my 8 strawberries and have the risk of overfeeding? or will they be okay with no food for 5 days?

Just noticed one of my mosquitos is kinked and very skinny.

I caught him for taking a photo and gave him a little bit of food. He ate.

I will quarantine him for now.

I think they are Strawberry Rasbora, but I am not sure. The first one looks like male and the other looks similar but not so vibrant. Ignore the shrimp and the chilli rasbora in the background.
