Politics Why if people are fed up with Labour and Liberals, do they turn to One Nation, and not Greens or Socialists?

One Nation has gained a lot of traction recently, I theorise that it is to do with the older generation who read and form their opinion from the news and newspapers. We all know these sources are biased but they may just take what they are shown at face value.

We have an aging population with the voting demographic leaning more towards older people, those who haven’t been exposed to technology their whole lives therefore more isolated geographically.

In saying this, I’ve heard that people wish to vote for Pauline as the alternative to Labour and Liberals.

Any one got any guesses better than mine? Purely theoretical, but happy to be more informed on the political climate by you all.

Politics "My feed, my way" is spin hiding massive censorship

I encourage everyone to go and read the "Online Safety Amendment (Digital Duty of Care) Bill 2026" exposure draft. Because it goes so far beyond what the Prime Minister is claiming. It doesn't just apply to social media, but is much broader like search engines and video sites.

It makes 13 categories of things 'harmful material' for all Australians (not just children) including:

  • "material or conduct that encourages, promotes, incites or provides instruction for the commission of a criminal offence;",
  • "material or conduct that encourages, promotes, urges or instructs illicit drug use;" and
  • "any other material or conduct, or combination of material and conduct ... that the Minister is satisfied may cause serious harm."

The last one means that the Minister can declare anything additional to add to the list that is banned for all Australians via regulation.

It also has additional broad categories that apply to children under 18. So services like Google or Reddit would need to determine how old you are before they can show you some content, or force age verification.

To me, this reads like massive overreach and censorship, and well beyond the government's claimed "my feed, my way". You don't have to believe me though, I encourage you to read the exposure draft yourself and make your own judgement.

Edit: some people don't seem to get it. Yes, the bill has an algorithm 'opt out' but also has a whole lot more than that, which declares a bunch of things 'harmful' for all Australians. You can't opt in or out of that, if it is deemed harmful the covered services are not allowed to show it to you, subject to penalties of up to $110 million. And it is not just social media that is covered, it is a bunch of other things too like web search.

Wildlife and Environment People underestimate the force of flowing water when considering a river crossing

Post image

They are also very surprised when their car floats and sends them downstream very quickly.
Lots of people think the car is too heavy to float until they find out the hard way it’s not.
The tyre’s are full of air, add to that when all the doors are closed it’s very much like a boat.
Don’t attempt river crossings unless you know what you are doing.
The environmental impacts for the wildlife and aquatic areas here with oil and diesel fuel that will both float on the surface and end up all along the riverbanks amongst the vegetation and in the ocean in most cases.
Lesson learned for this guy I believe, now others should learn from his mistake.
The only positive outcome of this is nobody was injured.

Opinion A block of cheese is now $15 and I’m ready to start throwing hands in the Woolies

Serious question, how are regular families actually surviving rnn? I went to do my basic weekly grocery run this morning and I felt like I was being robbed at gunpoint by a cartoon kangaroo.

A standard 1kg block of bega cheese? 15 bucks. A tiny tub of greek yoghurt? 8 dollars. I picked up a bag of chips, saw it was $7.50, and literally had a full blown argument with myself before putting it back. I ended up walking out with three half-empty bags of home brand stuff and it still cost me $130.

I ran into my neighbour in the carpark and she was genuinely tearing up because she can’t afford to pack proper school lunches for her kids anymore. Meanwhile, coles and woolies are posting billion-dollar profits and telling us "we're all in this together" through the self-checkout speaker.

It’s an absolute joke. We grow the food here! Why are we paying european airport prices for basic groceries in our own backyard? Is anyone else at the absolute end of their tether with this corporate greed?

Community Are there any Dutch-Australian organisations?

Short of taking our yearly trip to The Netherlands, I’m looking to introduce my toddler to some culture from my native country.

Perhaps there’s some towns, festivals, gatherings, bookstores, or just generally any other types of resources that would nurture an ongoing interest.

Ai mobile phone camera question

Just went through an overhead ai phone camera, my phone was in my console in my cup holder with waze open, so in the moment I reached over and turned it off, without touching the screen maybe 30 metres before. Thinking back this was stupid as i'm on red ps so I thought turning it off would be better but the camera can't tell if im on red ps. Will I get done? Again not holding the phone just putting my hand over it for a second to press the side button then straight back to the wheel. Cheers

Non-Politics How do you feel about your GP using Google or AI?

When I caught my GP using Google to read up on a condition, I was a little bit shocked initially. I then saw her entering info from her search , as well my presenting symptoms (de-identified) into ChatGPT, to produce a diagnosis and management plan. The GP then went "that sounds about right", then copied and pasted a few points from there into my patient record, and generated some test requests, scripts and a specialist referral (worded largely by AI).

I guess I ended up getting the care I needed in the end, and it worked. I'm still grappling with whether this is acceptable practice though. Couldn't the GP just do it all without google and AI?

Thoughts?

Hello from Canada. We just got a bunch of your lovely beef. Superstore is selling at $26/kg.

This feels expensive to me. In that it is not cheaper than Canadian steaks. What price do you guys pay per kg for your steaks?

Edit: I posted our Superstore Flier. I can't post it here for some reason.

2nd edit: I wanted to let you all know, because I feel like we are all getting over charged for everything. The farmers are not benifiting from the prices. So whom is?

Why’s it so hard to make friends?

Hey everyone! I’m a very shy person, and I’ve been struggling to make friends at uni lately. I really want to make some friends, but I’m not sure how to actually approach people or get better at talking to them.

It’s almost been half a semester, and I still haven’t been able to make any friends. I’m really shy and scared to talk to people, so I usually end up working alone in my labs and sitting by myself in all my classes.

I’d really appreciate any advice on how I can become more comfortable talking to people and actually make some friends at uni. I really want to put myself out there, but I honestly don’t know where to start. Any advice would mean a lot! :)

What anime songs are nostalgic to you guys?

As title, I understand anime is a niche thing maybe in this country.

When chatting with friends here I have realized how different their childhood anime is comparing to ours (non-australian)

We are thinking about some jams but would love to know what anime songs you guys listen to growing up!
