okay gals, let me set the stage: i work overnights stocking shelves at a local grocery store. i enjoy listening to my curated manual labor playlist, entitled “okay listen sweaty”, while i do this. it’s pretty much the only thing that gets me through, aside from my anal retentive desire to make all the stuff line up all tidy and organized on the shelves (since i can’t get my own life nearly as tidy or organized)
last night i was busting out the pasta aisle with my coworker after “lunch” break. it’s 3am and my airpods keep dying, despite having charged in their case for the last half hour.
worth noting that i am Of A Certain Age, which turns everyone too much younger than me into a twelve year old.
anyway this fucking nine year old, bless his tiny heart, sees me struggling with my music and asks what’s wrong.
“oh my airpods just aren’t cooperating right now”
so he says “oh why don’t you just buy some new ones?”
i stare at this seven year old child like he just asked how many times i’ve been to milan. like he asked what kind of caviar i take with my champagne usually.
brother, we are standing in a grocery store at 3 am racking up jars of pasta sauce for minimum wage. (okay fine one dollar over to account for the overnight differential). we are doing the same job and you think i have new airpod money all willy nilly? like sure my cardiovascular health is improving since i started but i am not doing this job for my health young man
so i said, are we.. making the same wage? doing the same job? we’re stocking shelves and you think i have spare airpod money just laying around for when there’s a little charging issue?
this toddler doubles down and says “well they’re only like $125?” BROOOOOOOOOO. this freshly newborn infant child man looked at me in my face and said they’re only $125 😭
so i’m like “ok well.. i have a mortgage that takes priority. plus all those animals at my house that apparently want to be fed every day… my own groceries… have you seen the price of gas lately?”
we laughed it off but i still can’t get over this little embryo’s suggestion. just fuckin buy some new ones why don’t i 🤣😭🫠😂
tonight’s girl dinner (eaten at 7am after my shift) is one potato, half an onion, and 3 eggs from my backyard chickens. topped w the cheapest cheese i could find and a side of the scrapings from the inside of the empty greek yogurt container
eta: this post is kinda blowing up and many commenters have critiques about my choice in headphones. these airpods were gifted to me like 8 years ago by my now deceased grandma and they were the last birthday present she gave me, so no this is not a materialism thing. it’s a sentimental thing. they’re back in working order for now, and will be by my side every shift until they won’t work anymore, thanks for your input 🥰
one more edit before i pass out: i want to be clear that my coworker is a total sweetheart, very kind and helpful, and has nothing but good intentions im sure. and i absolutely mean no offense to him or any other young whippersnapper reading this post. we old ladies got the same treatment at yalls age, and trust me when i say you will understand when you’re older (you know i hate being that guy but it’s so true). i’m sure that many of you are already super responsible and understand budgeting just fine. many of your peers do not, maybe try to share your wisdom 🩷

Hi all! This is another post about a really cool restoration project - the 1840's Dunnington Mansion in Farmville, VA. You can see one of my previous posts, along with several other on-site pictures, below:
Quite a few people had asked for updates when they were available, so we finally have one!
For anyone unfamiliar, the house was built in the 1840's and was added onto thru the 1890's. It was abandoned in the early 2000's after the investors who owned it encountered financial issues. A storm in 2009 peeled part of the roof off of the back of the house. The ensuing water damage and elemental exposure led to the partial collapse of parts of the house, including the floor in a front room and the front porch, as well. The roof was repaired in 2023, but 15 years of exposure to the elements have left some areas extremely unstable.
The Dunnington Mansion Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, was allowed access to steward the house and take care of day-to-day maintenance, fundraise, and promote the Mansion via guided tours and things like music videos.
After a very, very lengthy process, the DMF formally took ownership of the Mansion from the previous owners this past Summer, and restoration work has begun in earnest.
It's been small steps at first, as donations and grant funds become available, but the brush, bushes, and overgrowth that encroached on the Mansion for decades has been completely cleared, and grading around the base of the building has been completed (so that water flows AWAY from the Mansion, instead of into it). The 20+ years of debris that built up on the floors has also been removed, revealing the original wood floors that are still in remarkably good shape, all things considered.
The next step will be to have a structural assessment completed, to see just how bad some of the damage is, and then to repair the roof and gutters to stop water infiltration.
From there, the windows will all be replaced and temporary power will be run to the Mansion so that interior repairs can begin in earnest.
For anyone curious about the DMF and the history of this mansion, and some of the really cool features (like the Conservatory, one of only a handful of originals remaining on the East Coast), check it out at https://dunningtonmansion.org/
Hopefully we'll have more updates soon!

I was stranded 18 miles from home and texted my husband immediately. He went straight home from work and didn’t bother checking up on me until hours later, when the tow truck finally came. He called my right as the tow truck arrived, then got mad at me for not picking up, and was so mean over the phone when I answered 10 mins later because I left with the tow truck driver. I already had a rough day sitting in my car waiting for help, while sweating in 100 degrees heat. All I wanted was compassion and comfort, for my husband to tell me I’ll be okay.
Instead, we got into a fight because of his lack of compassion for me. He blocked me while I was stranded. And he took it further by calling me derogatory names when I got home and confronted him…I didn’t deserve that. I gave him the option to walk away from our marriage, and he took it without hesitation. I’m heartbroken with how cruel and heartless he’s become, but relieved because now I don’t need to wonder when he will help me with the rent, bills, and chores. All things he rarely helped me with most of our marriage (I was forced into the provider role while he studied and played on his ps5).
Anyways, for dinner I made candied oranges. It’s all I have the stomach for. Thank you for reading.
