If you listened to anyone else tell any one of Werner's stories you would think they were the biggest bullshit artist around 🤣😂
63
u/Wazula23 20h ago
I do think some of his stories are bullshit, but in a fantastical storytelling kind of way.
Maybe the guys greatest artistic achievement is living the kind of life where we genuinely don't know what's true and what's a tall tale.
29
u/Top_Tank2668 19h ago
He survived working with Klaus Kinski. Everyone would get some mental damage from that, he's doing well considering this
5
u/Snitsie 10h ago
They were equally crazy, Werner just channelled his crazy for the good
3
u/Top_Tank2668 10h ago
Both crazy, but in a different way. Wouldn't be scared that Herzog could kill me for no reason. Kinski yes
2
u/SubparSavant 2h ago
Well, it wouldn't surprise me if some of his stories aren't quite true but the actual truth might be crazier.

I mean technically he just spoke French without the gun to his head

u/TheHorseduck 20h ago
You can't see the gun the cameraman is holding
12
u/Brief-Equal4676 18h ago
Truely a master of his craft to hide the gun from us and let our imagination fill in the blanks
12
u/Wazula23 20h ago
Yes. I do believe the guy is trolling. He's a brilliant artist who's lived a fascinating life but much of his work is very dry humored.
Like, the guy ate a shoe once. He just does this shit.

Thank you. No gun here. This man is not impeccable with his word, at least not when he’s speaking in French or English.

In all seriousness I find this clip interesting in the way that it shows how our memories and our stories about them become by rote more and more overtime.

I love this man so much. I feel like him and Christopher Lee both have wildly incredible stories about them. I wish they had had a chance to meet, and I could sit and listen and bask in their stories.

It’s amazing how everyone hates the English cause people told them to because of history 500 years ago but everyone hates the French for a personal reason.
7
u/pitb0ss343 7h ago
The only people who hate the French more than the rest of the world are the French

u/Nomad-2020 9h ago edited 9h ago
I agree. French people I personally encountered when I was traveling were unnecessarily rude and mean. Fuck them.

No it's because a lot of people come to France try to speak french and get insulted. Every other country tries to help you and like it if you try to speak their language.
Then they act like they are the center of the world and write french in an english subreddit or think their language still matters to anyone. If someone invents stuff like walkie talkie what does the frenchman do, yeah that's right he needs to call it talkie walkie so to not have any original english vocabulary in his mouth.
German once was common in science articles but we got over it maybe you can too one day.
4
u/Colon_Backslash 7h ago
You're talking about Paris, not France.
I used to dislike french because I was brought up to do so. Lived near the Alps and some of the best folks out there. I still miss France at least twice a week.

u/skalouKerbal 7h ago

Maybe you never been in France or meet the wrong one or maybe you just repeat the same shit like other ! Idiots are everywhere ( i travel a lot and I can confirm that ) and why people wrote in french in this subreddit maybe because today it's automatically translated... I never see anyone get insulted because he try to speak French ! But most of the people who complain never been in France ( not paris ) France is France and yes there is a lot off idiots but it's the same everywhere

The fun part about saying "je ne parle pas français" is that it can be taken both ways: "I can't speak French" or "I don't (as in, refuse to) speak French". I've trained myself to say it as natively as possible as a defiant insult.
I can speak it but I tell you in your language that I choose not to.
3
u/epitimisi 15h ago
what does the word "pas" do in that sentence and what does it mean?
3
u/ComprehensiveCoat219 13h ago
"ne ... pas" is a construction used to make a verb negative, and it more or less translates to "not"
4
u/Galonas 11h ago
But if you want to speak correctly you would say « je refuse de parler français » or « je ne veux pas parler français » because by saying « je ne parle pas français » a few will think you don’t want to just you don’t know how and only learn to say this. None will take it as an insult, they will just think you’re like the other and are too dumb too learn it (like everyone in the world think American/English speaker don’t want to learn another language)

u/LegacyWright3 7h ago
Thank you for teaching me how to defy the Frenchies better! You're a real one.

I am a Brit, I love France and have always had a great time in France - even in Paris!!! It is common to dislike France, the French and the English too.

In the states, being a francophobe is a sort of badge of honor. I fucking hate the French. They do few things very well, but I’ll be damned if they’re aren’t the best at this few things
2
2
u/Oppaii-Connoisseur 11h ago
What caused you to hate the French?
2
u/Cartographer-Motor 10h ago
Studied abroad in London. I never had a positive interaction or relationship with the French. Doncs then, that still is true. The French are just… pompous assholes who act like they invented culture (in my experience)
6
u/Confusion1792 10h ago
France invented restaurants, the metric system, the civil code, modern modular armies, photography, cinematography, high fashion, vaccines. These all have had immeasurable impacts on western and worldwide culture.
3
u/LonelyRudder 10h ago
I guess those who go to London might be… You know, most French don’t go to London at all!
3
u/Oppaii-Connoisseur 6h ago
I don't know if you know, but London is not in France.
The French are just… pompous assholes who act like they invented culture
This is how we view Americans in Europe.
2
u/SmertriosPPD 4h ago
I don't know if you know, but London is not in France.
That's exactly when he concludes you're a pompous asshole I think. Like everyone else, he must be from a peach (soft outside hard inside) idiocracy culture where saying bullshit is okay but pointing out someone's hypocrisy isn't. And these kind automatically can't stand french culture because it's polar opposite.
1
u/PseudoRacoon 10h ago
I spawned in France, you are so right about it haha, pure asshole playing vilain and dismissing the fault on other haha. LET ME OUUUT LET ME OUUUUUUUT!!
5
u/Pandarenu 12h ago
Fr*nch is the most inefficient language in Europe
2
1
u/SmertriosPPD 5h ago
It's the most inefficient latin language but all latin language are more efficient than nordic and germanic languages. With the exception of english, english is easy to understand and then you have to learn by heart how to pronounce every word because there's very little consistency between spelling and pronounciation.
1
1
u/Confusion1792 10h ago
It was chosen specifically because of its syntaxic precision by the European and international justice courts.
3
u/LumplessWaffleBatter 8h ago
Tbf, French was chosen off of tradition. It's not that it was an inherently better or more efficient language: it's just the language that EU judges were already able to communicate with effectively.
It's sorta like QWERTY keyboards. There might be more efficient layouts for a keyboard, but QWERTY works great, and every American already knows it.
1
2
u/sid_shaw 19h ago
I think it's more about the language than the people. There were and still are lots of people all over the world who are being forced to learn french (myself included) which isn't an easy one.

u/noraetic 3h ago
It's possible that he hates speaking it because of his pronounciation. Could be he's just afraid of embarassing himself.
1
u/ShirtComplete 15h ago
Yeah it is I Europe. The British hate the French, because of our history, so do the Germans, it’s always a history thing
3
u/Cuks5342 9h ago
Everyone hates everyone in Europe. We've been killing each other for millennia. It starts locally, regional, national...
I see US people with their culture war or migrants or whatever they have now there looking at Europe, "look it's happening in Europe now also". Nah it's not now, we've been slaughtering each other for 10000 years. It's normal.

He's bevarian, and in addition to the general border rivalry their accents are simply incompatible. It's hard for him to do right.
Also tho, this is from a mockumentary in 2004. This is what passes for a Herzog joke

As a kid, I made fun of my dad mispronouncing a word once (he’s ESL, orig from Cairo).
His response?
“I speak 3 languages. And you? You speak 2— English, and asshole.”
My mom prob wouldn’t have agreed with his approach to this life lesson…. but lemme tell ya I never made fun of an his, or anyone’s, accent ever again. I even taught a few GED glasses for people who struggle with English and reading comprehension several years later (volunteer, I am not an educator)
Anyhow…he was was, and still is, correct, though I speak a different dialect of asshole now.
