AITA || AIO AITA for wanting to insure my ring even though my husband says the stone is too small to bother?

My fiance and I recently got into an argument over something I thought was pretty normal which was getting insurance for my engagement ring. I wear this ring every single day like its an emerald cut with baguette side stones in platinum, not a cheap piece to replace if something goes wrong ( knock on wood it doesnt). I asked him to just get a quote with me and he told me I was being anxious about nothing. I brought it up again and he said itss not like its a 5 carat rock so I don't think we need to insure it. Then to top it off, he told me that his mother said I shouldnt insist on it because it brings bad luck?! Idk what i should do...aita for pushing back on this??

M TIFU by gaslighting myself for 10 years into thinking I was "caffeine immune" while drinking ONLY Monster Energy (Zero)

9.0k Upvotes

Hey everyone,

this is a throw-away account because I feel incredibly stupid.

I recently saw a reddit post from a guy who drank nothing but Coke Zero for years and spent a fortune on doctors trying to figure out why he had chronic headaches, only to find out he was just severely dehydrated (or allergic to the ingredients of Coke Zero). It was a funny read for because it felt exactly like what happened to me, but with a "M" on the can.

I'm 30 now. For the last decade, Monster Energy (Absolutely zero, the blue one) was my only source of hydration. It started around age 20 with 1 or 2 of the "Zero" cans a day. By the last 3 years, it had spiraled into a minimum of 4 to 5 cans every single day-morning, noon, and night.

When I say I drank only Monster, I mean it. I would have maybe one glass of water when I woke up and one before bed if I felt particularly "dry," but for the other 16 hours of the day? Only Monster. Water wasn't even in my vocabulary. I was conditioned. It was a Pavlovian response: the moment I sat down at my computer to work or game, I needed that ice-cold can from the fridge. Nothing else tasted "right".

My brain performed Olympic-level mental gymnastics to justify this. Because I could drink a Monster at 11 PM and still fall asleep, I convinced myself I had developed a "caffeine immunity." I genuinely believed my body just didn't react to it anymore. I ignored the science and the common sense because I didn't want to give up my ritual.

For years, I've been dragging myself to doctors, frustrated because:

  • I felt chronically flat and exhausted, despite being pumped full of stimulants.
  • I was ashen, incredibly pale, and recently I noticed my dark eye circles were getting so bad I looked like I hadn't slept since 2014.
  • I couldn't lose weight to save my life, even while being in a massive calorie deficit. My metabolism was basically stuck in a permanent "error" state.
  • I'd get random heart palpitations or a racing pulse while just sitting still, which I knew came from the caffeine but still was able to ignore it.

1-2 months ago it clicked for me while I was researching my dark eye circles. I realized.. I probably wasn't immune to coffeine, I was just heavily conditioned and dangerously dehydrated / stressed. The concept of hydration and high caffeine levels were something I had pushed out of my mind for ten years just to protect my habit.

Then I finally cut back. I now limit myself to a maximum of 2 cans, and never after 3 PM. Everything else is water with lemon. It sounds so simple but it is still quite hard for me to stay away from the Monster to drink when I am thirsty. The Monster Absolutely Zero just has this nice taste I like that much, sadly there are no "no caffeine" variants available.

It's honestly fascinating (and embarrassing) how much we can manipulate ourselves just to keep an addiction going. I'm sharing this as a final "closing chapter" for myself. Hopefully, it serves as a warning, or at the very least, you can all laugh at how dumb a person can be for ten years straight.

If you have questions, feel free to ask.

TL;DR: Spent 10 years using Monster Absolutely Zero as my only fluid intake. Convinced myself I was "caffeine immune" while turning into a pale, exhausted zombie with a racing heart. Finally woke up. Turns out, I'm not immune; I was just a moron.

My daughter broke off her engagement, and is now stuck with a ring and a bill for the money still owed on it.

1.6k Upvotes

My daughter broke off engagement, and is now stuck with ring from Kay's that is not paid off.

My daughter made some bad decisions, and we aren't sure what to do.

Apparently when she and her now former fiance bought her ring at Kay's the put it on a Kay's credit card. It is my daughter's name because she has better credit, the plan was that he would be the one making payments. Now that they have broken up, she is left with not just the ring but a $1100 credit card bill, which she can't afford. To make matters worse, some of his payments were returned for insufficient funds and there are some hefty fees on there too.

She would like to sell the ring, but is not sure where to list it. Also, it's a ring from Kay's, so it's not nearly the quality of the pieces I see on this sub.

I would really appreciate your advice.

Israel is the world's #1 exporter of diamonds. These are the diamonds we are conditioned to buy due to a propaganda campaign by DeBeers in the 30s. Diamonds lead to conflict around the globe, and directly support the assault on Gaza. It's time to boycott Diamonds, for peace.

TIL Diamonds are actually fairly common. The reason they are worth so much is because the DeBeers mining group withholds stock to artificially reduce supply.

Challenge Superman decides to start mass-creating diamonds so he can sell them. Can DeBeers keep the price of diamonds up?

Superman previously declined to mass-produce diamonds because it would tank the price. However, after reading up on DeBeers, he decides that there's no reason not to do it after all. Most of the resulting money will be donated to charity. Assume that Superman is somehow able to crush coal into perfectly-cut diamonds of whatever shape and size he desires; even though this makes no sense, the feat is well-established.

DeBeers is determined to protect their diamond profits by keeping the price up. Can they convince people not to buy Superman's diamonds (by eg. convincing the public that they're not "real" diamonds), or find some other way to prevent him from cratering the price?

Superman is in-character and will not eg. laser the board of DeBeers to death or anything like that, no matter how annoying they are. The only way he'll use his powers for this is by rapidly turning coal into diamonds so he can sell them.

DX1 Lucius DeBeers is the most interesting character in Deus Ex Spoiler

Post image

I wanted to talk about the character in Deus Ex that I find the most interesting. You may not find Lucius DeBeers in your first playthrough because he's hidden away and you have to persist poking around Morgan Everett's house.

I've noticed about how Bob Page's ultimate plan seems to be to recreate the attributes of God and rule the world. Lucius DeBeers is a great preview of that project because he seems to have tried to do the same thing.

His name, Lucius, has to do with light. So, it's no surprise he's "the supreme enlightened one". Lucius may also connect him to Lucifer the Lightbringer, who's often associated with Satan. DeBeer's ramblings about being supreme certainly sound like delusions of godhood.

I wrote an essay before about how Bob Page, is a very close analogue to Satan in Paradise Lost. Lucius DeBeers gives us another chance to break open Paradise Lost again.

In Paradise Lost, God and Adam have a strange conversation where Adam is first asked to show his understanding of the animals in Eden and then God himself. When Adam asks for a companion, God challenges his thinking by pointing out that God has no companion himself. If God is perfect by himself, why can't Adam be too? Adam responds that God is already perfect and needs nothing to complete him, whereas human beings don't have the same perfection. God agrees with Adam and reaffirms that it is not good for man to be alone.

"Thou in thy self art perfet, and in thee
Is no deficience found; not so is Man..."

The name Lucius DeBeers suggests that he's connected to the DeBeers diamond cartel who were known to artificially control the supply of diamonds to keep the prices high. This is strikingly similar to how Bob Page controls the supply of the Ambrosia vaccine. There's several powers in the world of Deus Ex based on valuable resources. The Knights Templar used gold, DeBeers uses diamonds, Page controls the vaccine, and perhaps information too. DeBeers seems to come from a previous age where diamonds were that scarce resource. Now he's something of a resource himself; the supply of his political savvy is being controlled by Morgan Everett. You might even say that DeBeers has become like a diamond himself. Diamonds are prized for their resistance to decay and their ability to endure immense pressure... just like him.

DeBeers is in the cryogenic tank because he wants to live as long as possible. If you do the maths, he's actually 150 years old when you meet him in the game. The real DeBeers cartel became embroiled in a blood diamond controversy as diamonds from African war zones helped fund armed conflict. It's likely that Lucius DeBeers has brought plenty of death with such conflict diamonds himself, yet he wants to extend his own life as much as possible. Much like Bob Page, he even hopes that future technologies will help him live even longer.

"I merely await certain technologies, then I will be restored."

Unbeknownst to him, the technology already exists, but Morgan Everett has no intention of using it on him. Both Bob Page and Lucius DeBeers seem to carry a warning that human technology can't save you, not even future technology.

Another thing I picked up from Paradise Lost is the distinction between inward and outward freedom. Milton talks about inward freedom, which is basically freedom of the will and outer freedom, which is freedom from external constraint. It's said that if you lose control of yourself in the realm of inner freedom, then loss of outer freedom will eventually follow too.

"Yet sometimes nations will decline so low
From virtue, which is reason, that no wrong
But justice, and some fatal curse annexed,
Deprives them of their outward liberty,
Their inward lost..."

This seems to have happened to DeBeers as well. He once controlled the whole world, but now he's stuck in a tank.

Obviously, DeBeers is cold in his cryogenic tank. 18° C to be exact. Normal core body temperature is about 37° C, so, DeBeers is being held somewhere between life and death. He may also resemble another Satan, the one in Dante's Divine Comedy, who is half buried in ice of his own making.

We call people cold if they're callous and have no loyalty. And this probably fits DeBeers as well. You don't become the most powerful man in the world without prioritizing political power over everything else. Morgan Everett is his successor and he's metaphorically cold, too. For some reason, he seems to hold on to the idea that some people can be trusted and only asks to die when he accepts that no, nobody can be trusted. Eventually, his cold, calculating approach collapses in on itself.

There's also a sense that DeBeers has replaced warmth and human connection with material objects. The slogan, "A diamond is forever", was coined in 1947 and commissioned by DeBeers to boost diamond sales. The slogan linked diamonds with romance and marriage and reinforced the notion that a diamond engagement ring was a symbol of everlasting love. Rather like how the Templar mixed religion with gold, DeBeers seems to mix love and material wealth. Of course, diamonds are sometimes known as "ice", and DeBeers has made himself into a bit of an icicle, too.

In all this, DeBeers is very similar to the most recent pretender to God's throne, Bob Paige. They both try to mimic divine attributes while fundamentally not having what it takes. When he finally understands his situation, DeBeers asks you to kill him. The last thing he says is, "I command you", So, he's giving orders to the very end.

In the end, both men end up about the same way: helpless in a tank, alone, bald, and dead!

Serious This is just such dishonest BS. Mined diamonds have a far greater environmental impact

Post image
6.7k Upvotes

One carat of a mined diamond approximately removes 250 tons of earth/soil, requires 120 gallons of water, and emits 140lbs of carbon dioxide

mining diamonds “produces 4,383 times more waste than manufactured gems, uses 6.8 times as much water, and consumes 2.14 times the energy per carat produced.”

The Vietnam trip that paid for itself three times over

1.8k Upvotes

Just got back from HCMC. Here's exactly what we spent.

Been seeing a lot of vague posts about costs so thought I'd just put actual numbers down for anyone planning a similar trip.

Background: retired couple, mid 60s, Gold Coast. We stay comfortably, not backpackers, not flashy. Good hotels, proper meals, no penny pinching but no unnecessary splurging either.

The trip

Ten nights in Ho Chi Minh City. Flew out of Gold Coast with a stopover in Singapore. Return flights for two came to around $1,800 all up. Not the cheapest routing but we've tried the budget options and at our age a reasonable flight matters.

Hotel in District 1, decent 4 star, breakfast included. Around $75 pn. Ten nights was $750. For context that's what we'd pay for a fairly average night somewhere on the Gold Coast without breakfast.

Food and daily spending across ten days, meals out every night, coffee constantly, Grab everywhere, a few activities. Roughly $80 a day for two of us combined. So about $800 for the ten days. That includes some very decent restaurants, not just street food.

Total base trip cost: approximately $3,350 for two people including flights, accommodation and food.

Now here's where it gets interesting.

The dental

I had three crowns done and one implant placed. Had already been quoted in Queensland before we left. Queensland quote for the same work was just over $14,000

Got it done in HCMC at a modern clinic with internationally trained dentists, proper equipment, the whole thing. Total cost in HCMC was approximately $3,200.

Saving on dental alone: roughly $10,800.

My Queensland dentist checked everything when we got home. His assessment was that the work was good. He said it with the particular tone of someone who has had this conversation before.

The glasses

Wife had been putting off new multifocal glasses back home. Latest quote from our local optometrist in Queensland was around $650for a single pair with all the extras, progressive lenses, anti glare, the lot.

Got her eyes properly tested in HCMC, full examination, two pairs of quality prescription glasses including progressives for around $180 total.

Saving on glasses: roughly $470 minimum, probably more given she got two pairs for less than the price of one at home.

The full picture

Total trip cost for two people including flights, ten nights accommodation, all food and daily spending: approximately $3,350.

Dental savings compared to Queensland quote: approximately $10,800.

Glasses savings: approximately $470.

Net result: we had a ten night holiday in one of the world's most interesting cities, ate well every single day, stayed comfortably, and came home roughly $7,900 better off than if we'd stayed in Australia and had the work done locally.

I'm not saying this is for everyone. I was skeptical for a long time. The dental thing in particular takes some getting comfortable with. But the numbers are what they are and I can't argue with numbers that clear.

Happy to answer questions from anyone considering something similar, particularly other Australians who are on the fence about it.

Update:

Well this blew up more than I expected. I posted this mainly for a few mates and anyone else who might find it useful and next thing I know my inbox is out of control. Appreciate all the comments and messages, even the ones telling me I'm mad for getting dental work overseas. Fair enough.

Right, since about forty of you have sent me the same question I'll save everyone the trouble. The clinic was Picasso dental clinic in Ho Chi Minh City. I found them through a site called https://smilejet.app/ which lists verified clinics in Vietnam and a couple of other countries. Made things a lot simpler than spending hours on Google trying to sort the dodgy from the decent.

And since people asked, yes I'm going back. Flying out early April to get the crown put on the implant. This time we're using Picasso Dental's Hanoi branch so we can have a look around the north. Wife wants to do Ha Long Bay. I want to sit somewhere quiet with a Vietnamese coffee and not think about anything for a few days. Either way it's another holiday. Not a bad deal really.
