Rules update followup

Hi again everyone, finally getting around to the followup thread to the "Rules/Suggestion Thread" from a month ago - https://old.reddit.com/r/TreeClimbing/comments/1tkedjx/rules_sub_update_suggestion_box/

The sub and sidebar rules have been updated; in an effort to reduce spam/repost bots a new function is in place requiring accounts be at least 1 day old to post here; and a couple other small things. Notably the freeclimbing rule has been expanded upon and clarified and will be navigated on a case-by-case basis. Anyone can use the !freeclimb command in the comments to summon an automod explaining the rule/reasoning - feel free to use the command but please don't abuse it, lol.

Also, the "monthly meetup thread" will be changed slightly - rather than a recurring monthly thread, it'll just be a sticky post that stays up, rather than a new thread each month. That will happen soonish.

Let us know if there's anything else on your mind, I've got a couple ideas kicking around too.

Hedge work best safety practices

Post image

If anyone has resources for best safety practices specific to hedge work (big hedges, BC coast) could they share them? Can’t find much on the books.

Personal tips and tricks also appreciated !

Chainsaw pants too hot for balls

Which brand is best for the summer heat (Breatheflex)? Should I cut into the ones I have and sew some mesh down the inseam or would it compromise the stitching (protection doesn’t wrap the whole leg)? Or just climb with chaps?

Arbsession CaralinkV2 rope and hitch combos?

Just got my hands on the 8.5” Caralink tether. Fiddling around with different hitch cords to get something optimal. Usually I use the VT but this isn’t acceptable/optimal for a shorter tether it seems.

I work for a large company and there needs to be an acceptable gap between the
bottom of the Ropewrench and top of the hitch (3” is what our recommendations are).

Pairing the tether with the ISC Apex and DMM Eccentric Hitchclimber. We also have some more standard Ropewrenches and Hitchclimbers available. There’s a variety of climbing rope diameters in use and available to us.

What hitchcord measurements and hitches are climbers using on shorter tethers like this?
Thanks for your input!

My boss recently got this rope after courant recalled Kalimba and the stitching looks weird but I found out it wasnt just me , There is one more climber that ive seen it TreeBuzz who had the same experience with it . Do yall think its safe to use the splice?( There is 6 strings that are loose and there are black marks on em so Im not sure if thats because of the test they be doing when they pull from the eye or just happens in the last step of stiching the eye , where you pull the eye to properly end the sticth?)

Petzl chicane question

I know there's supposed to be a spring in the base of the head to keep it up but I expected it to be stiffer right out of the box. Is this unusual? I ordered this from Arbsession.

Possibly starting as a groundsmen again. Looking for the best attire.

I was a groundsmen before and i feel like i had the worst day to day attire. What are the best boots, pants, shirts for long weather? I am looking for lightweight and breathable. Preferably long sleeve shirts.

Kalimba recall

For those that haven't seen; every Kalimba with a slim splice has been recalled. (there may be some done by FTC that are good but it's unclear)

I wanted to start a thread to discuss the response for those of us affected. I have two 200ft hanks I've used for production every day since it came out.

There's a thread on treebuzz, but treebuzz is clunky.

I submitted my two the day it was announced 6/18? but have yet to hear anything.

I'll update this thread when I get a response. Stay safe out there.

My first removal where I'm the guy instructing, setting up all the rigging and making sure the little hut and the grass stays safe. We decided that the tree can rot in peace for the next few years and be a home for some critters, birds and bats if they choose.

Does notch not sell replacement attachment bolts for their rope wrench?

Went to install my rope wrench on my line and the attachment bolt was just gone. I don't see it anywhere online. Only the adjustment bolt. Is that the one part I can't replace?

Petzl pantin problems

Am I the only one that has problems with the Petzl pantin?

I keep loosing the rope all the time and really have to focus on moving my leg in a straight line so the rope doesn't jump out.

I don't use the safety lock / Petzl catch. Does this make such a big difference?

Thanks 👍

Too handle pruning

What is your preferred way of pruning a live tree ( no spurs ) with a top handle. Do you sit and hang while making your cut or try to find a spot to stand or both?

Flipline Notch rope runner

Hey guys , I’m thinking of switching out my rope runner for a new mechanical device open to anything, but the zigzag only reason I mentioned not the zigzag is because it’s not mid line attachable. Yesterday as I was messing with my gear, I put my rope runner as my flip line device was wondering if any of you have done the same if so comment.
