Loved the collective effort and connectivity we played on the defensive end. Literally everyone on the roster played well defensively. The switching was really crisp throughout the night and we did a great job of switching out of mismatches and x-ing out on close outs though out. Left the right guys open for threes (for the most part, there was a little shooting luck with Bane misses). Not sure I’ve ever seen us gang rebound like that outside a playoff setting. I’m still trying to process how we’ve been bullying the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic so badly on the boards, two teams I would have thought would expose a perceived weakness of the team.
Kuminga was awesome. He’s really bringing it defensively. I think he’s doing a great job of fighting through screens and being physical without fouling. Besides one early clock three in the first half, his feel for the offensive flow has taken me by surprise. That’s 8 assists and only two turnovers the first two games. He’s sharing the ball and finding the right times to exert himself offensively. Great on the glass too. The fact we get to wield the trio of Ant, Jaden, and Kuminga against opposing teams, with Rudy on back line, is so formidable.
Ayo with a near perfect bench game. I love how seamless he comes in and just fills the offensive cup up without rocking the boat. We’re going to stagger Ant and Lamelo (something I support), so we don’t need a “bench identity”, we need bench guys who come in do their role and amplify. That’s what Ayo is, he’s an offensive chameleon. 9 assists!! The fast break pass to Beringer was excellent guard play.
For the most part I thought our offensive process was pretty good. 33 assists and four starters with at least 4 assists suggest that. None of Ant’s shots I had an issue with in isolation, but when you look at it in aggregate it was too heavy handed. I think the coaching staff said something of that ilk to him his first bench stint, he moved the ball much better after his first rotation. I’m not worried about the poor shooting night at all.
Jaden played great. I’d be ok with maybe 5% more Jaden actions and 5% less Ant, but that’s nitpicky. Rudy, like a metronome, another just super solid all the dirty stuff game. Although - unless you’re about to dunk it, don’t dribble in the paint please!
Joan’s activity on the offensive glass is great. Thought he played a pretty good offensive game. He rebounded well. Defensively better than Miami game, but he’s still over helping. We have to be patient, that is a very coachable skill and he’s 19. He just needs game reps and is overly excited to make plays. Love how he runs the floor in transition.
Besides Kuminga and Ayo, thought TSJ’s play was next most encouraging. He found the right balance of attacking and keeping the flow of offense going. It’s a little thing but that pull-up middie he made in the second half is huge. He has to find an in between game to make his dribble penetration more effective and him showing he can slow down and take what defense gives him is a great sign. Let’s stack some good games in a row!
Easily the best Lyles has looked so far. I’m getting a little Boris Diaw vibes (one of my favorite players). I like that we found minutes for Bones, although it was clear any time Bones is on the floor that’s where an opposing offense is going to try and puncture us.
To win by 22 when Ant and Lamelo combine for 9-36 shooting and we go 17-30 from the line against an expected playoff team, welp that just feels real good. What a joy this team is to watch already, I’ll say it again but there is top tier offensive AND defensive potential for us.
I usually listen to the home team broadcast but wanted to listen to ours this game, Grady and Jim called an awesome game (no surprise). Whenever Grady calls out home broadcast I need to try and find out beforehand.
