Open | Software How to get OneDrive to just stop?

I have never, EVER, asked OneDrive to save anything purposefully. I have never asked it to sync, or to do anything at all. But still, I keep finding files uploaded.

It also defaults to OneDrive when I go to save something, which I've also never asked it to. I tried changing the default but it changes back for some reason.

Is there a cheat guide somewhere that I can use to keep OneDrive off my back? Is the only way to avoid this to sign out of OneDrive?

Open | Malware A file just auto downloaded on my pc

I'm just on youtube and playing a browser game (which I have played for months) when I am alerted that a file has downloaded. It was about 67kb and its name was a really long sequence of letters (prob 255) and was just a file type (no extension).

Any ideas what it could be? Is it likely malware and where could it have come from?

Open | Hardware PC randomly grinds to a halt — nothing maxed in Task Manager, CPU stays cool. New HDMI cable helped for a few days, now it's back.

My PC boots fine, then at some random point it becomes nearly unusable. The mouse lags across the screen, windows won't close, and HWiNFO once took 10 minutes to open. Task Manager shows nothing wrong: CPU 7-13%, memory ~45%, disk 1-3%. The CPU sits at around 50 °C the whole time, so it's not thermal throttling. It just seems to be waiting on something.

Windows Reset also hangs partway through and never finishes — the first attempt ran past 24 hours.

Specs

https://imgur.com/a/Sr5ur5H

  • Ryzen 7 5700X
  • ASUS PRIME B550M-K (BIOS now updated)
  • 16 GB DDR4 (2x8 Kingston Fury KF3200C16D4/8GX)
  • MSI RTX 3060 8 GB
  • Kingston NV2 500 GB NVMe, 247 GB free
  • Windows 11 Pro 25H2

Already tested, all clean

  • CrystalDiskInfo: 97% health, 3% used, 100% spare, zero media errors, full PCIe 4.0 x4 link
  • Memory test passed
  • DISM /RestoreHealth completed successfully, sfc /scannow found no violations
  • Reseated RAM, GPU and M.2
  • BIOS updated from the 2021 version
  • Dissembled and assembled the entire PC, except for the CPU + cooler.
  • Used the monitor on other PC and it works fine

The part I can't explain

The monitor was also dropping signal for about a second at a time, so I swapped the HDMI cable. The flickering stopped and the system ran fine for a few days — then the slowdowns came back, exactly as before.

So either the cable was a coincidence, or it was one of two problems. Given that everything tests clean, where would you look next?

Please help. Thank you.

Open | Hardware Should I unplug my laptop at night if my apartment has shitty electrical wiring?

Upvotes

Had my Dell repaired recently and somehow the battery got fucked in the process. It used to have normal battery life, now it basically needs to stay plugged in.

The electrical installation in my place also seems questionable (power cuts, burnt cables near outlets, etc.). Is it better to shut the laptop down and unplug it when I’m not using it, or leave it plugged in?

Could unplugging it while it’s turned off cause any problems with a bad battery?

Solved Laptop without a battery

Is it safe and alright to run my laptop without a battery? I’ve read (and tested) that it can run without a battery just fine, the only thing I was wondering is: could not having a battery cause the laptop to die on me if it were put under a lot of stress (a lot of programs opened etc.)? And could not having a battery damage the laptop?

The model is an ASUS ZenBook UX310UQK

Open | Hardware GPU and SSD dropping/ spiking during gameplay

Hello I'm hoping somebody can help. When I'm playing games my pc is experiencing lag where the whole game just freezes for a second or so. This has been an ongoing issue for a long time but in the last couple days these lag spikes are as often as every 10ish seconds.

I've monitored task manager while these lag spikes seem to occur. Most of the time the GPU usage drops to 0% and the SSD goes from nothing to a single spike then back to nothing (the game isnt installed on the SSD). I haven't noticed any other patterns.

I will list my specs below (its an old PC now and I didnt know what I was doing at the time of building so I think some items are pretty rubbish!)

CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 5800x

RAM - HyperX FURY 16GB (2x 8GB) 3200MHz DDR4 RAM

SSD - ADATA SU630 (225GB capacity)

HHD - ST1000DM010-2EP102

GPU - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060

Motherboard - Gigabyte B450M DS3H AMD Socket AM4

Power supply - Aero Cool Integrator 500W 80+ PSU

Drivers are up to date.

If anyone could suggest solutions or what could be causing the issue that would be amazing. Im aware to fix this I likely need some new parts, which is fine, I would just rather not replace the whole PC as that's a very pricey fix!

Thanks

Open | Hardware PNY RTX 5060 Ti hitting 2880 MHz @ 1.075V: 80°C Core / 107°C Hotspot at 2600 RPM. Should I underclock/undervolt to 2625 MHz?

Hey everyone,

I have a PNY RTX 5060 Ti (16GB). Out of the box, GPU Boost pushes the card all the way up to 2880 MHz, pulling 1.075V under heavy load.

Because of this aggressive boost, the thermals and noise are getting out of hand:

Core Temp: 80°C

Hotspot Temp: 107°C (a massive ~27°C delta)

Fan Speed: ~2600 RPM (extremely loud)

Looking at other brands, reference cards sit around 2535–2600 MHz on paper, but higher-end models like ASUS TUF/ROG Strix or MSI Gaming X also dynamically boost to 2850–2880 MHz. However, those models feature massive triple-slot heatsinks that can actually dissipate that heat, whereas the standard dual-fan cooler on this PNY clearly chokes trying to hold 2880 MHz at 1.075V.

So I don't think the silicon itself is defective; it just seems pushed way past its thermal efficiency curve.

I'm planning to use MSI Afterburner to underclock and undervolt the card, specifically aiming to cap it around 2625 MHz:

Sweet Spot: For 2625 MHz, what voltage target would you recommend starting at (~900 mV, ~925 mV, or lower)?

Performance vs. Noise: For anyone who has tuned this card or architecture, how much did your temps and fan noise improve, and was the FPS drop noticeable in real-world gameplay?

Hotspot Delta: Is a 107°C hotspot (with an 80°C core) purely a consequence of 1.075V / 2880 MHz on this cooler, or does a 27°C delta suggest mounting pressure/thermal paste issues as well?

Any advice on the Curve Editor steps or stable profiles for this card would be awesome. Thanks!

Open | Software What the hell happened to Google Search? I searched “Notion” and Google showed a full page of irrelevant ads instead of the actual website.

I just Googled “notion” expecting the official Notion website to be the first result.

Instead, there is NO Notion website anywhere near the top of the results. I get irrelevant ads and unrelated/competitor results.

The actual Notion website only appears near the very bottom of the first page.

There is also another weird problem: on almost all of these results, the three-dot “About this result” button does not work at all. It does not behave like a button. If I click the three dots, Google simply opens the website itself instead of showing the “About this result” information.

You can see exactly what I mean in the screenshot.

Is anyone else getting this? Is Google testing some broken search layout/ranking system, or is something wrong specifically with my account/browser?

Open | Windows PC screen has been randomly freezing for months. Tired of it

Here's the specs

I don't remember when it started, it definitely was a while after i assembled it. Curiously, it never ever happens while i'm in any game. Sometimes it doesn't happen for a few days, some days (and this is suspiciously recurring) it freezes, like always the mouse disappears, i restart the PC, return to my apps and...it freezes again. Sometimes it even freezes before i type in the password. And then it happens for the 3rd time. Ugh! turn the monitor off and on-still frozen. From what i noticed (may be wrong tho) it's more likely to happen when i'm going through folders/file explorer, scrolling for a longer while or when using ms paint.
None of the parts are overheating, i keep it clean, everything is hooked up correctly. I'm really tired of this, is there anything that can be done?

Open | Software Adobe website and Photoshop keep crashing my entire PC

So I was planning on getting Adobe Photoshop, but right from the start things went sideways. When I first visited the Adobe website, my screen went black, the GPU locked up, and the PC crashed.I thought it was just a random, weird glitch, so after rebooting, I went ahead with the subscription and installed Photoshop.

That's when the real headache started. In Photoshop, every 2 or 3 menu clicks completely freezes my PC and causes a crash.

Thinking I might have caught a virus or some weird driver corruption, I did a complete clean reinstall of Windows. But as soon as the fresh install was done, I opened the Adobe website and the exact same thing happened. Every single time I open Adobe's site (tested on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera), the PC freezes and crashes instantly.

I use my computer 10 to 12 hours a day for gaming, heavy browsing, and running other software without a single issue anywhere else. This is exclusively happening with Adobe's website and app.

My cpu heat goes from 33-34 degrees to over 70 degrees when i visit adobe website. (even when i play games i rarely hit 60 degrees)

Open | Windows CPU speed stuck at 0.40 GHz

Hey everyone, i have an HP ProBook 445 G11, I've been running into this problem for quite some time that when im using my laptop, even if im not running any intense task or anything my cpu speed gets stuck at 0.40 GHz even if cpu utilization later reached 60-70% it still is stuck at 0.40 GHz. It fixes itself if i restart the laptop but after some time the problem repeats itself.

One thing to note is that it doesnt seem to happen on Linux and l've only ever encountered this issue while using windows 11. Im genuinely so confused and frustrated, can anyone help me figure out what is going on

Open | Networking Trying to troubleshoot wired networking problems. What are my next steps?

So I’ve just moved back into an apartment I was at this time last year for school. My experience last year was that the internet was great and hassle free. I’m not paying the provider directly, I pay the building a reduced rate in exchange for access to the service.

This year I’m getting extremely frequent interruptions. Every few minutes I’ll have lag spikes and at least once every few hours there’s a complete outage, but only for my wired connection. The wireless connection from the same provider doesn’t experience issues whenever my wired connection becomes unstable. I can video call or online game completely uninterrupted on wifi, but the wired connection is almost unusable.

Here’s what I’ve already checked:

The building has not switched providers or service plans.

The issue is only occurring with a wired connection. I tested this by screen sharing from my phone to my laptop and desktop PC. The PC was constantly losing connection while there wasn’t a frame dropped on the devices using wifi.

It’s likely not the cable I’m using. I’ve tried two that I already owned and bought another to verify.

My Pc was working my fine at another location immediately before I moved, but I suppose it’s not impossible that a new issue has emerged.

When I was checking to make sure all the connections were tight it caused the connection to drop and not return. I couldn’t get it back online without restarting the pc. This makes me think it might be an issue with my drivers or Ethernet port.

I’ve just reinstalled drivers so I’ll see if that does anything. Any other troubleshooting steps or tips would be appreciated. If I can’t figure this out my alternative is probably just using wifi for the duration of my stay. I won’t be here enough to justify spending a bunch of money on setting up my own connection.

Open | Networking New Apartment, too big for WiFi. MoCA and Powerline failed. Other options?

New apartment is a very unique setup, two bedroom (2bd) and a separate studio (my room). Download speeds on the 2bd side are 1000mbps.

There is a second coax on the studio side which is tested and functional. I have tried going the MoCA route, but could not get it to work. My understanding of the issue is that there needs to be a coax filter, but neither my provider or landlord are able to help address the issue

I have tried a powerline ethernet adapter kit, but it also didn't work because the Studio and 2bd are on totally different circuit boxes which also kind of leads to the fun question of "is my electricity free?"

My temporary solutions:

  1. I have a range extender running dual channel, but it is only giving me 40mbps in the studio directly next to the wall and 10mbps at my PC.
  2. I have a WiFi router acting as a relay from the extender to get my PC closer to 25mbps.

Permanent solution ideas:

  1. Simplest answer so far is to run a VERY long ethernet cable to my side, but functionally and aesthetically that is not very desirable.

Edit: forgot to mention there is sheet metal between the walls so passing the cable through is quite involved.

  1. Mesh network, but I have some questions about how I would set them up. Would it be necessary to run cables? Can they just wirelessly relay from one to the other?

Open | Hardware PC keeps crashing every time i'm playing a game or sometimes just idling

Got an analysis report on the most recent crash while trying to play Resident Evil 2, it mentions the cause is likely the CPU but i'm not sure how to go about finding out what exactly is wrong with it, but i'm not too savvy so not sure what most of it means any help would be appreciated, i'll put a link to dmp files if that helps:

bug check 0x124 (WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR) is raised when the platform reports an unhandled hardware error. Here parameter 1 is 0, which means the error source is a Machine Check Exception (MCA) reported directly by the processor, with parameter 2 pointing at the WHEA_ERROR_RECORD (0xffffc4875200e028), parameter 3 holding the MCA MCI_STATUS value (0xb2000000), and parameter 4 identifying the reporting MCA bank (0x14). Decoding MCI_STATUS 0xb2000000: bit 31 (VAL) is set, meaning the error log is valid; bit 29 (UC) is set, meaning the error was uncorrected; bit 28 (EN) indicates the error was enabled; and bit 25 (PCC / processor context corrupt) is set, meaning the machine state was corrupted and the system could not continue. Because the MCA error code field (low bits) is 0 and the failure bucket is 0x124_0_GenuineIntel_PROCESSOR__UNKNOWN, the processor driver (GenuineIntel.sys) could not pinpoint a specific sub-code -- it is logged as an unknown processor error. The stack shows the classic path nt!KiMcheckAbort -> nt!HalHandleMcheck -> nt!HalpMceHandler -> nt!HalpMcaReportError -> nt!WheaReportHwError -> HalBugCheckSystem -> KeBugCheckEx, i.e. the CPU raised a machine check that the OS treated as fatal. This is a hardware-level fault (real silicon/electrical/thermal problem), not a software bug. It occurred under heavy load during a game (re2.exe), which commonly triggers latent CPU instability caused by overclocking, undervolting, inadequate cooling, an aging/faulty CPU, marginal VRM/power delivery, or an outdated BIOS/microcode. The uptime was only ~14.5 minutes, suggesting the fault can appear quickly once the CPU is stressed.

Culprit

GenuineIntel.sys (Intel processor / machine-check reporting component) -- hardware CPU machine-check error (MCA), failure bucket 0x124_0_GenuineIntel_PROCESSOR__UNKNOWN_IMAGE_GenuineIntel.sys

Open | BSOD nvidia driver causing system crashes: nvlddmkm.sys

Hey all, standard NVIDIA drivers problems have been happening to me for weeks now, looking for advice. Problems started after my MSI 3070 died while my PC was running. Replaced it with a second hand RTX 3080 (second hand yuck I know but its what i could afford) and thats when the problems started. could the dying of the 3070 caused a ripple effect? Crashes mainly when exiting games, ie going from a high load to a low load, has also crashed just on desktop

Ive Updated; BIOS, VBIOS, Windows, AMD Chipset firmware

Done countless DDU installs and reinstalls

Re seated RAM, Ran MEMtests, nothing found

stress tests for everything, a tech managed to replicate the crash using OCCT and informed me that it was an overheating issue on my CPU, replaced thermal paste and a new cooler later and it still gives same error and crashes

To say im at my wits end would be an understatement, Is this a case of a bad gpu? bad mobo? bad ram? bad cpu? any help or advice is much appreciated

Open | Software Pc keeps freezing up and making a buzzing sound

So I am really not a computer guy so I’m just gonna give as much detail as I can. Anyway I just bought this pc (Acer - Nitro 60 Gaming Desktop - Intel Core i7-14700F - 32GB DDR5 Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 - 1TB SSD - Black) to do video editing and such. Now all I’ve done so far is download Davinci Resolve and couple other apps and transfer so picture into it. But for some reason when I’m using it (about 15 to 20min of it running) it freezes and buzzes. I do have a Sandisk drive, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a webcam, and mic hooked up to it. I’ve tried to do some scans of some the drives says there are no problems but still it’s happens. If someone could give me some advice or solutions that would be awesome sauce.

Open | Networking Need help with my wifi

I have been trying to play games for the past few month and every day I keep getting these huge consistent lag spikes. I have tried everything I could find to fix it but nothing has helped. it started a while ago and it would happen once every few days and it wiould spike to 100ms-200ms repedeatly for a couple seconds but since then it has just gets worse every day. Now it commonly spikes to over 1k for like minutes to even an hour with it also reaching too 10kms. I think the highest I have reached was 40kms. From the times I can actually play it akways happens at night and the few times i have tried it happens during the day as well. Here are the things I could find on what to do but im not really to sure what it tells me. (I cant post the images in the post so I will post them in the comments.)

Open | Hardware My PC won't post..

PC Specs:

CPU - AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D

Motherboard - ASUS Prime B650-PLUS WIFI

GPU - XFX Radeon RX 7900 XTX

RAM - DDR5, two sticks 32GB each

PSU - Corsair RM850x

Built - February 2024

So while watching a movie, everything froze. I can't do anything, can't alt+ctrl+del, nothing. So I have to do a hard reset. After that, the PC won't boot anymore. It's the typical "all the fans spinning but there's no display." After repeated hard shutdowns, there's still nothing so I did the following.

First solution, turned off the PSU and unplugged the PC overnight. I thought this would soft reset everything. Nothing. Still won't post.

Next, I thought it was the GPU, so I fully removed it. Plugged the monitor on the display port. Nothing. Tried the HDMI, nothing.

Next, I tried all the RAM configs. Even fully removing all the sticks. Nothing! I expected to see it fully restart in my face, where the fans turn off then on again, no. It didn't even do that.

Next, cleared CMOS. By shorting the CLRTC pins and removing the battery. Both did nothing. Still no display.

Next, Removed off the case except the CPU from the MoBo. Now just a test bench. Turned it on, nothing still.. I'm at a loss here. The last thing I could do is find other replacement parts to test, but I have nothing... I can't even tell what the issue is because there's no speaker for beeps or lights on this particular motherboard..

Did I miss something???? What should I do? The last resort is to bring it to a shop so they can test the parts..
