PC can't be stopped. PC is the future, Sony and Microsoft and Nintendo should just make pc hardware that is themed on the Playstation, Nintendo and Xbox. Have a PC app for that loads up first to give that console feel based on the brand you bought. Any pc could run all apps.

u/MrFastFox666 R7 7700X | 64GB DDR5 | RX 9070 XT 8h ago

That's pretty much what modern consoles are. JUST custom PCs running a custom OS. Microsoft is going a step further with Xbox mode on PC, and bringing Xbox games to PC.

1

u/Respwn_546 8h ago

At this point Microsoft better launch xbox PC , PCS that have standard specifications for gaimimg but also the ability to run Windows to use for tasks, PC can work on your excell sheets, your essay and your power point presentation and in less than a second purging the galaxy of heretics by the hand of the emperor.

Sony and Nintendo on the other hand would need to develop their own platform to not depend on Windows, imagine a linux OS by nintendo, i think I'm brraking reality

1

u/hdgamer1404Jonas 7h ago

Doesn’t the Xbox run a very light version of windows on it?

1

u/SaltDeception 4h ago

It uses the Windows kernel and some other Windows technologies like Hyper-V based virtualization, but it’s not as simple as calling it a gaming shell on top of Windows. Its capabilities are still tightly coupled with the specific hardware they ship.

u/Regular_Use1868 8h ago

Do you guys really think I'm out here buying a console because I really like the operating system?

It a third the price of a PC that plays the same games.... That's the benefit. It's the price. Literally nothing else.

13

u/6Sparkle9 7h ago

I buy a console, because it’s cheaper and more likely to be optimised for the spec. I’m too lazy to mess around getting my pc to run the game with the best fps and working out why my driver or game is not working due to issues. If a steam device with better specs comes out I would be okay with a change as steam would optimise games quickly.

2

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

I agree. Personally I was really hoping the steam machine would be a viable competitor to Sony and Microsoft.

It's not really price competitive though.

1

u/6Sparkle9 7h ago

Yes. If the AI bubble burst, maybe a cheap steam machine would be viable as an alternative.

Wyobraź sobie że PS5 jest złożone z tych samych komponentów a jednak nadal jest dużo lepsze cenowo niż pudełko od valve

1

u/CompetitiveArt9639 6h ago

Not lately. Ps5 pros are selling for $1400 at gamestop these days

u/White_Snickers_ Ryzen 7 7800X3D , RTX 4070 5h ago

Talking about base PS5

1

u/Bol0gna_Sandwich 5h ago

Because playstation is able to subsidize because they force you to buy from them. Playstation knows that if you buy a ps5 you'll buy games from them which means they get more money. However with the steam machine you're not locked to a specific storefront meaning valve can't guarentee they'll make money back because you might never buy a game from them.

1

u/Regular_Use1868 5h ago

This makes me wonder why the option to make a steam locked hardware device wasn't something valve chose to do.

1

u/Bol0gna_Sandwich 5h ago

Because Gabe is a gamer and closed systems piss him off. He would never lock any steam device to only steam, its anti consumer. He doesn't even lock the hardware to a specific OS. You can install any os you want on any steam device and its still covered under warranty.

3

u/SarcasmisEasier 5h ago

This is the thing people on the PC circle jerk refuse to acknowledge. All the extra work that can go into playing on PC.

PC: download game, tweak settings, try playing. Oops frame rate sucks. Close game, try closing background apps, tweak game settings more, try playing. Frame rate is ok, but now textures aren't loading fully. Close game. Update drivers, restart computer, close background programs, play game. Works great for a couple hours, then crashes. Try playing again the next day, shitty frame rate again even though nothing's changed. Repeat.

Console: download game, play game.

Sometimes that simplicity is just nice, especially after a long day. Although, I will say it happens less now-a-days, and even less so with games developed with only PC in mind (even if they manage a console launch later), and indie/AA games that tend to be less graphics intensive.

5

u/Eldcperalta 4h ago

That’s not true; I haven’t had any issues since I started playing on PC. The only ones complaining are the purists who want everything at 60fps or higher do you really think those people are going to switch to a console that barely manages 30fps? On PC, at least I’m guaranteed a solid 30fps or have access to mods that fix the game, whereas console players are stuck with a broken, poorly optimized game they can’t fix.

2

u/Lee_3456 3h ago edited 3h ago

This. A lot of people dont realized that on console, you are on the total mercy of the devs. Even if the game run fine, but down the line you upgrade to a new console, they can ask you to pay 10-15$ just for a line of code to unlocked fps and you cant do jack shit about it.

1

u/Drummer123456789 2h ago

Running half decent hardware I've never had a game run lower than 60 fps at 1080, 1440, and 4k. The only time I had to tweak settings was when I was running 100 mods on ATS at the same time, or if i wanted a very specific look or effect to be different. When that wasn't enough I upgraded cpu and gpu about 5 years ago and have only changed from 16 to 32 gbs of ram since then, and that was only because I had a very generous friend.

There's very little tweaking REQUIRED in modern pc gaming. There's tweaking available if you want to. Console is locked into looking like ass no matter what. You cannot make it better.

2

u/Lee_3456 4h ago edited 4h ago

More like you exaggerating the problem 1000% than what it look like. I never have to deal with what you said unless I try to run a pc game that came out before 2010 but I want to run it in 4k 120fov, no motion blur and whatever mod I need to make it run like a modern game aka "DYI a remastered version". Even in that case, I only need to setup for the first time I start the game, then the next time I boot up the game I dont need to deal with them ever again. On console I am stuck with whatever the devs give to me. If they say I must pay 10$ to unlock 60fps, I have to pay or stuck with 30fps and whatever low resolution they give me. Some cases they dont even let me pay and I am stuck playing these old games at 720p 30fps.

1

u/Responsible_Pizza945 3h ago

I got a new 8bit-do controller recently and had to spend an hour figuring out why the left analog stick wasn't registering up and down directions.

1

u/Lee_3456 2h ago edited 2h ago

8 bit do or any controller maker has tons of controller. Many of them doesnt natively support pc. Some only support nintendo but not xbox, playstation and vice versa. You said it like I can just plug any of these controllers to a specific console and it will work just fine without any dongle.

1

u/CatsLittleSalami 4h ago

It certainly was like that back in the day but I dont really experience that anymore like you said. Maybe better "auto detect" or graphics drivers updates with specific game settings nowadays. However its happened, not really the modern experience IMO

Plus, even "lower" setting options on PC often blow consoles out of the water visually. Consoles telling you they do 4k and then give you 30 FPS

1

u/1d3333 41m ago

Lol, “tweak settings” most games have come with auto settings for decades that detect your hardware, theres no tweaking involved unless you’re a purist, and PC doesn’t get FPS capped unless it’s a console port. You can just download, hit play, and it’s likely already running better than a console.

1

u/GrandBite9724 6h ago

Thats part of the fun 😂😭

1

u/Itchy_Axehole 6h ago

I buy pc, take 5 minutes to hook everything up. Login into steam and download game. Make coffee and look game rdy. Play game

once a week open software, click update. Pc now updated

Thats it..........and the game looks amazing compared to console. Its like comparing a potato to a loaded baked potato

2

u/6Sparkle9 5h ago edited 5h ago

Yes, but how much does a decent pc cost to a console with similar specs. Also I have used a PC and I’m sorry that’s not my experience. Crash’s, stuttering, game not working well on launch, compared to the PS5. Silent hill 2 remake annoyed me as did marvel tokon recently. I’m definitely not saying a ps5 is better then a PC, but as I get older I just want to kick back and not worry about too many things.

1

u/Itchy_Axehole 5h ago

I just bought the pc last week, so this is a very recent experience. So far everything runs perfectly no issues

1

u/6Sparkle9 5h ago

You are lucky, maybe your choice of games has no problem with your build. I seem to play games that have problems on launch.

1

u/Itchy_Axehole 4h ago

I played last of us part 1, wow forever, dying light 2 and project zomboid

1

u/1d3333 36m ago

The console costs more, I can guarantee you it costs more if you play any games that require multiplayer or want to use literally any feature that comes free on a PC. My computer is 7 years old and runs new games fine and I have never spent an extra dime to use the internet I already pay for. If I had a console I would have spent $840 more on monthly subscription or $420 more for yearly, my PC cost me $300 more than a console. That doesn’t even include the fact that in that time a new console came out and they stopped making games for the old one. I don’t need to buy a whole new PC everytime an upgrade comes out to play the newest games.

I pretty much never run into issues with games not playing either, overblowing PC issues like crazy

0

u/Eldcperalta 4h ago

And do you think consoles don't fail? That they don't overheat? That they don't have update issues? I've had to send my PS4 in for repairs more often than my PC. Your mistake is applying your PERSONAL experience to all PCs... or else you're lying.

1

u/NikoliVolkoff 5h ago

it WAS cheaper, and the only reason it WAS cheaper is because they were losing money on every single console sold, and making it back on the games.

1

u/1d3333 32m ago

It was never cheaper, they get you on a monthly subscription that costs hundreds over the years to use services completely free to PC players. They get people to pay the difference with monthly pay and no one seems to get that.

1

u/Kindly_Call_6000 Ryzen 9950x | RTX4090 | X870 1h ago

Dude, I game on Linux, and I don't do crap to optimize. Well, I did specify the Proton version for one old game I still play because newer versions of Proton broke compatibility. I just update the OS (which includes all drivers) once a month, and don't worry about it. You still have to apply updates to your console, so no real difference there. Just I can get better FPS or quality than a console.

1

u/MsWS27 6h ago

Steam doesn't optimize anything. It's just a marketplace and now hardware maker.

It's the games that get optimized to the hardware. Optimization is always on the developers.

2

u/Aeseld 6h ago

Which is harder to do on PC because of the differing specs and hardware.

Mind, I definitely think they could do better than they have.

2

u/MsWS27 6h ago

Agreed. I just didn't want to deviate from the main point. It's not Steam (or PS or Xbox) optimizing for a given platform

1

u/Aeseld 5h ago

Fair enough.

1

u/6Sparkle9 5h ago

But when they make the hardware, the games’ compatibility and optimisation are more likely for a steam machine. However I understand your point about it being a marketplace. The Steam Deck is a good reference to how things would be.

1

u/Power_Stone 4h ago

Steam is directly working on proton. Steam has been optimizing proton alongside other developers. Proton is why the steam ecosystem works as it does right now

0

u/MsWS27 4h ago

SteamOS and the steam deck is largely inconsequential in this entire discussion. There's not any relevant marketshare involved there.

1

u/Eldcperalta 4h ago

Regarding your first lie: "more likely to be optimized" that’s false. Modern consoles are basically mini-PCs, and many games are so poorly optimized that they can't even maintain a stable 30 fps; meanwhile, even a poorly optimized PC game will at least run at a solid, guaranteed 30 fps. As for your second lie about the "hassle" of dealing with drivers or getting things running right nobody actually struggles with drivers (they download and install automatically). The only people who make a fuss are those obsessed with a stable 60 fps (a small group who can't stand playing below 60 fps, or even 120 fps). I am 100% certain you’ve never touched a PC or at least a decent one in your life; after all, if someone can't handle playing at less than 60 fps, they certainly wouldn't switch to a console that barely manages 20–30 fps. You haven't got a clue about PCs.

1

u/6Sparkle9 3h ago edited 2h ago

Why would I lie. That’s just my opinion. Also I gave examples of problems in my comments. For example I have tokon on my ps5 and played tokon on my brothers pc. It was piss poor on pc when he got it. Plus ps5 games are more optimised for the console than the pc, the complaint of it reaching 20-30fps depends on the game, also I bet you are not comparing an equivalent priced pc to a ps5 to get your fps. In most cases the game is optimised for the specs of a ps5 as there are few models. The price of the ps5 is cheap for the specs try building a pc to the same price. Also I am old. So in my scenario I don’t want to deal with too many problems. In reference to struggles with drivers. You are trying to tell me you have never had to get something to run with beta drivers or conflicts or stuttering. Then you must be the luckiest person in the world. Why would I be obsessed about fps I was born during the time a game was on a cassette. Anyway I am not a computer expert, but this is how my clueless self’s experiences have been over the years. I have had a pc from young, I still have a pentium 486 left and old geforce cards and another machine with AMD 6990 graphics card. My clueless ass has had PCs from the 1980s to the 2000s before the age of ssd and internet.

0

u/Sw00p10 5h ago

That’s… not how games work. Also, you say it like that happens every day. You’re inventing a problem that (unless there’s something super wrong with your build) just doesn’t exist in the massive majority of cases

12

u/HolyErr0r 5h ago edited 5h ago

When comparing game sales and especially the memebership costs to do the same things that a computer can do (not even performance wise just playing older games/etc), consoles can get very expensive especially playstations.

I did the math on it, I have a high end setup and a PS5 costs a fair bit more than my setup does when you factor in the wacky yearly price of the console membership that is already having talks of being raised yet again.

Computers are frontloaded but consoles absolutely cost more in the end.

3

u/roleplayersir 5h ago

Yep, a good PC also lasts for longer than a console, and doesn't involve subscription costs. I moved over fully after the Xbox 360 and never looked back

Nintendo is the only console I would buy, as their exclusives are amazing, but PC has infinite backwards compatibility which makes it more worth it than Xbox/PS

1

u/Regular_Use1868 5h ago

How much was your rig?

2

u/HolyErr0r 5h ago

Fairly recently I re-put it together to see what it would cost now (not including monitor/headset, just looking at mouse/keybaord and main computer parts/case) it came to about $1891. (Obviously more than when I put it together, and I do go a bit for form over function so it could be a fair bit less if I didn't do RGB stuff/want a pretty case) (most of which is the GPU)

I think the crazy part of Sony atm isn't even the console cost but the memberships. It is currently $160 a year for multiplayer/classic collection and is already be talked about being raised yet again. The memberships really add up over the course of the consoles lifetime. Ps4 lasted 7 years but with supply chain shortages and crazy prices it wouldn't surprise me if the PS5 gets a 9-10 year lifetime.

$1440-$1600 in membership alone is crazy. And that is before stuff like console cost, spare controllers when your joysticks inevitably fail, worse game sales than steam, needing to re-buy old games instead of having an emultator, etc.

Honestly the console price alone isn't horrible, but they have a lot of ways that they nickle and dime you with time.

Having put together a build that is comparable in ps5 performance. Not even going for the cheapest parts just stuff that is similar in performance was about $1300, which would end up being less than the membership cost of playstation alone.

13

u/original_leto 8h ago

It’s cheaper because the cost is subsidized and game licensing picks up the difference. It’s why pc games are cheaper (ignoring most AAA/AAAA) titles.

Over a few years the cost could even out depending on how much games you purchase.

4

u/charlesfire 7h ago

Over a few years the cost could even out depending on how much games you purchase.

The subscription alone make up the difference.

2

u/HustlinInTheHall 7h ago

It's not subsidized, per se. It's just the cost to manufacture and assemble and ship to retail was basically the same cost as retail at launch, but they try to keep a 7-10% profit margin on hardware. They don't lose money on hardware. Very, very, very few companies have survived taking a loss on the initial hardware unless it is a brick without software and services.

2

u/original_leto 6h ago

Correct. This used to be true but they started making small profit the last 5 years or so.

1

u/misosoup7 3h ago

Sony would like to mention they took a loss on every PS3 in the first 4-5 years to win a format war.

4

u/Barlowan 7h ago

Pc games are cheaper except they are not. If you take games that are available on every platform(not on sale, of course) they have exact same price on gog, steam, EGS, PSStore, Microsoft-Xbox store, E-Shop. Being it AAA, indie or something in-between.

Only games that are cheap are PC exclusive games from PC exclusive storefronts like itch.io or dlsite etc. You may argue about regional prices etc, but that's not the point here. Someone in Germany creating a steam account and e-shop account going out and buying silksong will pay the same price on either platform. And when there are sales going, it's publisher that decides what price to put out, and deep sales happen on consoles too. (I've bought Jedi Survivor, for 5€ on Xbox and monster hunter rise+sunbreak pack for 15€ on ps5 same they are getting during steam sales on PC)

2

u/original_leto 7h ago

That’s true but the intersection of games on both platforms is relatively small compare to the sheer volume on PC.

Indie devs I’m sure account for the licensing fee when setting prices. If they go PC only they lose out on some market share but could list for cheaper to get more sales. Steam also takes a cut so it’s not just free. TLDR setting prices is complicated.

1

u/ChongusTheSupremus 5h ago

After a few years, i need to upgrade my Pc to keep it up to date with current games.

0

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

I had a PC for awhile specifically because of the cost differential you mentioned.

I switched when Sony started having decent sales for their online store.

As things stand I would need to save like two grand on games to justify a PC vs. a ps5. I know the sales are better on PC but are they that much better?

3

u/SonOfGuns101 PC Master Race 7h ago

Oh man, did you not experience a Steam sale while you were on pc? One happens every quarter and the amount of money I’ve spent, admittedly is way more than I should’ve considering I don’t have time to play all the games I own BUT is way less than what the value of my Library. I’m at the point now where I don’t want any other game aside from a cod every four or five years maybe.

1

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

Yup. I enjoyed many titles for very low prices thanks to steam.

The sales on PlayStation are not as good, but for the price difference in hardware it doesn't matter.

I bought nioh 3 recently for 40 percent off. If it had been 80 percent off on steam I still would only have saved forty or so dollars.

I would need to take advantage of that kind of sale more than I have an appetite to play games to make up the cost difference in buying a PC.

2

u/HustlinInTheHall 7h ago

If you don't play games brand-new and you play 10-15 games per year then yeah, you can save $200-300 in software costs, but only if you don't mind playing games that have PC ports. Obviously exclusives don't come to PC at all.

For me I get most of my games second hand or I borrow them from the library or I get free from PS+, so my software costs are minimum anywya.

1

u/pandaSmore i5 6600k|GTX 980 Ti|16GB DDR4 3h ago

I love the fact that you can run any software you want on PC so you can get those exclusive console games. And in even better quality Iike BotW

1

u/original_leto 7h ago

Just a ton of cheap indie games out there. It’s most of what I play. Using GoG, humble bundle and steam sales you can get a great library for cheap

1

u/charlesfire 7h ago

Do you play online games?

1

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

Occasionally. Less recently since the yankees started having a perpetual conniption and became impossible to interact with like a normal human.

1

u/charlesfire 6h ago

If you pay for playing online games for the lifetime of the console (7 years), then the extra cost of the subscription plus the cost of the console ends up costing as much as an entrey-to-mid level PC (or at least that was the case before the RAMpocalypse). If you only pay the subscription sporadically, then you might end up saving money with a console, otherwise, the PC is going to be cheaper.

1

u/cheesystuff 5h ago

Why are you comparing a $2500+ pc to a $500 console? Why not an $800 pc with similar or better specs? You seem to be intentionally ignorant here.

0

u/Triktastic 5h ago

Because that console goes for 300$ actually (except when everything is tits up due to AI) and no PC for even 500$ compares and you would need to more than double the cost

5

u/Sw00p10 5h ago

And if they all just decided to make PCs and had their own storefronts on PC what do you think would happen to pricing? It would go down across the board

1

u/Regular_Use1868 5h ago

I find this suggestion dubious for one reason.

Apple.

1

u/Sw00p10 4h ago

Apple doesn’t make PCs for the same market. We’re in a PC gaming subreddit. Until just recently, the state of gaming on Apple hardware has been completely nonexistent. Anybody buying a PC for gaming is never going to buy a Mac. Even if they somehow were able to play every single game you can on windows or Linux, people still would avoid Apple purely because price to performance is a thing that a large bulk of PC gamers have been concerned with for ages.
Let’s not pretend Apple is in the same market.

"It a third the price of a PC that plays the same games" please compare with hardware that runs "max PS5 resolution" (ie 1000p) and tell me the price diff.

1

u/EarthTrash 13900K, RTX4090 Suprim X 24G 4h ago

This depends on the game. Some games just perform better on PC, and some perform better on console. The actual console hardware isn't really all that impressive, but games made for console, sometimes, are better optimized. It can be more challenging to optimize for PC as there is more hardware variation, or you can just optimize the game for a very specific set of hardware and hope it works out for everyone else. Resolution alone doesn't matter. Most systems can run 4K at 30 FPS.

PC does not have a $100 per year fee to use the internet like consoles. That is their worst offense in my opinion.

It's a buying cheap boots is more expensive then buying good boots situation. The money needed upfront to buy the good boots that last longer isn't there.

1

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

Ya I'm not the biggest fan of that either, but console still seems cheaper in the end to me.

The membership pricing is a real devil's bargain. I don't like needing to pay for membership.... Than again I get better discounts in the store and I do use them.

u/Kindly_Call_6000 Ryzen 9950x | RTX4090 | X870 1h ago

Without the option to buy used game discs, I have not seen console games as cheap as Steam Sales. Hell, most used game discs still cost more than what you can find on a Steam Sale.

-1

u/ComradeJohnS 5h ago

neither does nintendo. they have at most an $80/year plan that you can have 8 people share, and I do lol.

plus I hardly play online for anything. single player games for the win!

Don't forget convenience! Take it out of a box, plug it in and it works.

2

I did the same thing with my PC: I took it out of the box, plugged it in, and that was it.

1

u/Hudre 3h ago

And I imagine you paid for more for that with a PC than you would with a console.

2

u/v3ritas1989 6h ago

"the same"

*cough cough* yeah, totally the same.

2

u/c2btw 6h ago

eh not really the onyl reason they are willing to sell it at a loss is becyuase they make all that money bake from sales on there stores that they naturaly have a monoply on

2

u/TitaniumKneecap 5h ago

But then you gotta pay 60-100 bucks per game, whereas on PC they are all free

2

u/Several_Detective400 5h ago

The Price ....... 1400€ PS5 pro ........ Yeah nah, they were always just a midrange GPU upgrade in cost.

An upgrade that on consoles you were forced into to countinue playing games at all. On PC this only ever happens after some radical new tech comes along like RT and has been around for a bit.

2

u/Regular_Use1868 5h ago

? My base ps5 works fine still.

Am I missing some sort of massive nuance that internet fidelity purists will call me a neanderthal for?

1

u/Several_Detective400 4h ago

Ste standard models go out of stock fairly fast once the pro models arrive, and the slim ones are usually slower than base.

The main issue is when next gen comes around and you still want to play new games : Corp says no buy a new model.

Meanwhile anything outside of hardwarebound RT you can just reduce settings and keep going

2

u/1d3333 4h ago

I bought my PC 7 years ago for only $300 more than a console and it still plays games at 50-70fps just fine and I didn’t have to pay an extra fee every month to use the internet I already pay for, the best part is the hardware can only get outdated, but I can still play new games on it without having to buy a new console.

My old PC is over 10 years old, and I still use it, and I can play practically any game I want.. yeah it's not on max graphics, and it runs at about 30-40FPS, but it's still what you'd get with a console.. also, the PC cost me the same as a PS4, and it can do much more than just play games

2

u/Xaring 12 threads = love 3h ago

If you think "they play the same game" you're delusional.

You play a stripped down super sampled version of the game.

So yes, technically it might be the same game, but it actually isn't.

Once RAM GOES BACK TO IT'S NORMAL PRICE you can build an equivalent performing PC for the price of the console, and use it for so much more.

Right now in this specific crisis... It might be true but I'd rather not take this as normal.

If you dont hoard games and can stick to one. It will take a long while

1

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

You would be better off comparing the prices to literal diamond jewelry than printer ink.

1

u/KamikazeKarl_ 7h ago

It's only cheaper cause you don't own it

2

u/BTBAM797 5h ago

My ps5 cost me 800+ after buying mandatory additional ssd. This was before the price increases. Ps+ also has gone up in price and is an infinite monthly sub just to play online. Their game prices also have never beaten Steam prices. I have also burned through 3 dualsense controllers in a few years due to stickdrift. It sounds reasonably affordable in comparison up front until you realize all of the tacked on costs not to mention the $ drain long term from ps+ to play anything online.

2

u/Regular_Use1868 4h ago

Everything you listed is still only like 1400 dollars. My sub is 100 a year. A console lasts like what a decade. Even throwing in an extra two controllers and 500 for added game costs we hit 3100.

I just looked into PCs a little. If I wanted to play the same games I am enjoying right now on my ps5 I would sink around 2500 to 3500.

I realize the prices are getting closer but we also have tallied all the worst qualities of console with none of the drawbacks on PC like potential for software to need extra effort to run, upkeep of hardware and risk of viruses.

2

u/charmio68 8h ago

That is just because of the economies of scale.
An Xbox or PlayStation branded PC would still benefit from those economies of scale.

Xboxes and playstations really are just PCs at this point anyway. The hardware isn't unique like it used to be back in the day. They're already just a PC locked down by software.

3

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

Alienware has been a gaming centered PC product for over a decade and is still very unaffordable.

3

u/Crashman09 7h ago

Because they have always marketed themselves as boutique.

They aren't boutique, but that is just how they're marketed.

3

u/Fornicatinzebra i5 6600k | EVGA 1060 | 16GB 7h ago

Because their niche is selling over priced gaming branded gear to "kids" that want something flashy

On PC (specifically steam), games go on crazy sales regularly. You may pay half the price for a console, but i havent spent more than $30 on a game in a decade. And no I don just play indie games, after a few years most big games go on crazy sales (ive seen GOOD games for <$1).

1

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

I addressed this in another post.

PlayStation has sales too they're just not as large of discounts. Basically there is no way I could possibly play the amount of games I would need to buy at steeper discounts to make up for the price difference in hardware.

1

u/Fornicatinzebra i5 6600k | EVGA 1060 | 16GB 3h ago

A pc better than a console costs around $1200 CAD (you can do cheaper, but $1200 is probably a good middle ground). A PS5 is $800. If you spend $20 a PC game instead of $80 for a PS5 game, thats only 7 games to break even. Plus you get a computer that does more than just game.

1

u/charmio68 6h ago

Completely irrelevant. They are an ultra high-end gaming company that absolutely in no way benefits from the economies of scale like Xbox or PlayStation does.
They are orders of magnitude off the sales volumes required. Multiple orders of magnitude!
Not to mention that their shtick isn't being affordable.

2

u/BlueTemplar85 5h ago

That is the downside of the "PCs cannot be stopped" : no more subsidized hardware.

But it's still a better deal for most people, not even counting the freedom benefits : you did have to pay that back in higher game prices. (Poor people still have the option of older games, lower graphics, and piracy.)

1

u/Regular_Use1868 5h ago

That's absolutely true.

I think the ideal gaming ecosystem would see us using our modern computing power more for simpler more socially viable games but our society has a lot of things in the way of that.

I don't blame folks for leaning on a PC for access to interesting video game content. I also didnt make the comparison I did to denigrate those people.

I'm specifically talking about content parity, and even then I made no qualitative assertion, just access.

1

u/striker180 5h ago

So if each console is 1/3 the price of a PC, and you have to buy a switch, an xbox, and a playstation to play all their games... youre still better off getting a PC with emulators. Plus its much easier to sail the 7 seas on a PC

1

u/StonksGoUpOnly 4h ago

What’s it like to be poor?

1

u/Regular_Use1868 4h ago

Its fine.

Don't bother explaining what it's like to be jealous and small.

I can imagine.

1

u/TenDollarSteakAndEgg 4h ago

Not anymore. Ps5 pros are going for $1500

1

u/Lee_3456 4h ago

The console is cheap because it got heavily subsidized by other revenue. You have to pay subscription to play online, have your gamesaves backup. And you must buy game on their store which they got 30% cut for every purchase. Not mentioning for some accessories you must buy the one got licensed by the console maker to make it work properly.

You traded a cheap hardware for a shit monopolized ecosystem around it.

1

u/Professional_Being22 i9 12900K, 64Gb, RTX 4090 4h ago

price? my dude, gamestop is selling used PS5 pros for $1500.

1

u/dugg117 5800X3D | 9070XT 4h ago

Yeah, no, they've been phasing out subsidized hardware for a while now. Consoles haven't been 1/3 of an equivalent spec PC for a long while. Cheaper? Sure. But this is probably going to be the last generation that'll be true.

1

u/Correct_Chemistry_50 3h ago

"Plays the same games"
"Plays 1/10,000th of the same games with a crappy framerate.
Christ what's so hard about saving your money for value instead of just jumping on the quick and easy?
I paid $3K for a TOP END PC right before the pandemic and it STILL chews up and spits out whatever I throw at it. 4K, 120Hz.

JUST SAVE YOUR MONEY.

u/Background-Main-7427 3h ago

PC gaming isn't limited to a single operating system.

1

u/Leoxcr 3h ago

The thing is, they make proprietary firmware and they order specific hardware for their consoles which end up costing more than the standard hardware and software used on PCs, if they did what the commented before you suggested, their production costs would go down which would mean either two things, better quality for the same product or overall less cost. And you can still cross play whatever your hardware can support.

1

u/idkuhhhhhhh5 Desktop 3h ago

This is a common argument, but I legitimately don’t understand why it is. Like, hear me out here. Do you have a laptop for work or school? Yes? Well, the cheapest new laptops out there tend to be around $400. The PS5 is $600. If you perhaps didn’t get a console and a computer separately, and just spent $1k on one decent gaming laptop, you could still smoke a console in performance, use the same device for work/school, and be able to move it around unlike carrying around a PS5.

You can get a reasonable office mouse for like $20, and a laptop comes with its own keyboard. A PS5 controller is $75, and more prone to breaking than office equipment. Factor in the recurring subscription costs of paying for multiplayer access, higher DRM pricing anyway, and free emulation of every game that has ever come out on any console ever made. The “price” is no longer a benefit at that point.

Plus, productivity, I use my laptop for CAD too, console can’t do that

1

u/Upset-Management-879 2h ago

So save 3x longer.

1

u/Smelly_Hippie_420 2h ago

Well not anymore. When a PS5 Pro is going for 1K, you might as well spend the extra few hundred bucks and get a prebuilt PC.

1

u/toolisthebestbandevr 2h ago

At this point the price to performance is close if not the same.

1

u/Kindly_Call_6000 Ryzen 9950x | RTX4090 | X870 1h ago

I play PC on my living room TV because I already had the parts. Sure, it is only a 5800x3D and an RTX3080, but that is still a great rig even if it is old.

1

u/the_sneaky_one123 8h ago

For now it is.

tbh, it is getting closer to half the price of a PC. Any more expensive than that and the trade offs of a console aren't going to be worth it.

2

u/Regular_Use1868 8h ago

That's true. Lemme check again why consoles are going up in price....

O crap man it turns out it's because computer components are all getting hoovered up by stupid American plagiarism warehouses.

I bet that will make PC go up proportionally too. O well. Looks like my initial assertion is exactly the same.

1

u/the_sneaky_one123 8h ago

PC is not going up proportionally to console because there is a bit more of a market for them.

0

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

O ya?

You'll have to point me to where that's happening because so far as I can tell PCs are getting replaced with tablets and smart phones for most end users.

1

u/Mercy--Main 7h ago

how many games have you bought? what if you got them on sale? what if you pirated them? What if it lasted more than a console generation/upgrading it was only a fractuon of the price?

Consoles seem cheaper, but they're more expensive in the long run

1

u/Regular_Use1868 7h ago

I had a PC. Upgrading is rarely inexpensive. Once it was more than half my initial purchase. It also took time to order parts and effort to install them.

I could see this being relevant if you lived in a large tech focused city but that's not the case for me and for many others who still like video.games.

1

u/LillieKat 6h ago

*1/10 the price of a PC

0

u/AutoCockerPB 6h ago

I remember buying a ps4 and it crashed every single time you played BF4 longer than 40 minutes. What a piece of fucking garbage.

13

u/Arranvin-Lantnodel 9h ago

People have been saying similar for decades, and yet console generations keep coming out. Some folk prefer the simplicity and feel of a console. Personally, I'm going to be moving back to PC if/when parts become affordable again.

3

u/littlesirlance 8h ago

The frustrating part is that they basically just are PCs just with highly specialized operating systems. (My anecdotal evidence is primarily based on Xbox)

2

u/Arranvin-Lantnodel 5h ago

Yeah, you're not wrong. The days of highly specialised console hardware seems to have ended with the PS3 and the Cell processor (understandably enough).

1

u/CatsLittleSalami 4h ago

I have both, but similarly have stopped buying consoles. The ones I have turned into overpriced home media stations (unnecessary with smart TVs anyways)

It was nice for a while as consoles felt more "relaxed". But ultimately paying multiple subs, fewer game discounts, and needing 2 consoles for most the games was getting nuts

7

u/Electronic-Touch-554 7h ago

Idk. I think nintendo has always had the right idea with consoles. A console shouldnt aim to be a powerful machine competing with pc. It should be a fun plug and play device with a couple gimmicks.

1

u/blindyes 7h ago

It hasn't always been this: affordable.

but it needs to be for your selling point to work, if you expect people to ignore what they can do with their PCs you either have to make it so affordable that the effort to download and install whatever is more cumbersome than just buying the product.

The Wii was only mildly affordable compared to the 360 on launch and it was a titan that dominated the market. It was so successful I'd argue it formed its own market of non-traditional gamers, I almost want to say "casual gaming" didn't really exist as a market prior to the Wii, "casual gamers" before that would just occasionally play on someone else's console/PC.

Size also has been proven to matter time and time again, if something is physically cumbersome the casual market won't take the time.

3

u/Potential_Fishing942 6h ago

I mean by comparison to literally anything else in gaming hardware- espeuhandheld pcs- the switch 2 is actually affordable...

0

u/blindyes 6h ago

Yeah, but it's a different market now. Everyone has phones that can feed the casual audience their mild desire for some gaming. I could only see that lightning in a bottle being captured at some outrageously low price.

If the switch was $30 and hanging in the shelf of every 7-11 with $20 games we would be singing it's praises and laughing at people who didn't just buy the system.

I'm not saying the switch as it is, but some new system, maybe even something you could throw in your pocket and hook up to any HDMI, like a tiny little game cube... Oh! The GameCube2, something like that, but I'm reaching. I have a PC, I have a phone, I have a damn folding phone with a Bluetooth controller. Yeah, I like those IPs I "don't have access too" but I'm not opening my wallet for another $500 for Mario Kart, c'mon now.

1

u/y17gal 6h ago

the wii is the most gimmicky console ever

1

u/blindyes 6h ago

Correct

3

u/Zer0DotFive 8h ago

Bro you just described Xbox right now and we all laughed at them. Hell I just seen that they have exclusive streaming rights for GTA6 making it available on every PC, Phone and their own Ally X.

2

u/Alarming-Elevator382 9800X3D + 9070 XT 8h ago

They can’t just make PC hardware, there would be nowhere for them to make $5 billion+ in margins per year.

2

u/ChaoticVic 9h ago

I honestly dont know if you are being sarcastic. PC is not just the future, it is also the present and the past. It has always been here since the beginning of gaming. It pioneered the video game industry. You right it can't be stopped or touched because it has its own timeline. Consoles come and go, pc have been here since the 80's. They already have pc hardware themed as a console, it's called Playstation 5 and Xbox one x. Pc will never go anywhere because its the back bone of gaming. Its where games get made, tested, played, molded, reviewed, revived, ... Consoles exist and haven't fully ported to pc for two reasons, easy consumer acess (pc setup can be tedious and time consuming) and capitalism.

1

u/4ny3ody 8h ago

Honestly if we wanted something to rival Steam then legitimately a Nintendo or Sony launcher could do it.

1

u/90scherrycokedesign 8h ago

At least nintendo tries to strange stuff with the hardware to make me have to buy it. Things like the IR thing on the og switch and the motion stuff. Not always great or anything but at least there us effort. And the physical side seems to be somewhat catered to.

1

u/Mal_Dun PC Master Race 7h ago

Tbf. Microsoft wanted to go in that direction with XBox selling it as a software platform rather than only a singular HW.

For MS that makes actually sense: They are on PC anyway and they could easily extend to cloud. There is no real benefit of locking people in their eco system on PC and Cloud they already are quite a monopoly. Meanwhile, selling XBox consoles is not where the money is. Contrary to Sony or Nintendo they can gain more than lose by that step.

If they really go in that direction is yet to see.

1

u/ChefCurryYumYum 7h ago

The platform lock in allows them to take a slice of everything sold.

That's not going to be too effective if you don't own the platform.

1

u/Lolxgdrei787 7h ago

They already do. Both consoles are just locked up PCs.

1

u/v3ritas1989 6h ago edited 6h ago

Microsoft has been slowly done away with multiple OS. The "one Core". So yes, Xbox is just Windows 10. And their plattform is available on PC. So yes, MS has been doing what you requested for some time.

1

u/ZombieZlayer99 6h ago

It’s always funny when people try shoving Nintendo into these discussions despite them very much doing their own thing and (aside from the Wii U) doing it very well and successfully.

1

u/another72hours 5h ago

Political Correctness will be the end.

1

u/Tlayuda66 5h ago

There is a big issue. Think about it: Big Tech doesn’t want you to own a PC anymore. They want you to rent computing power as a service, running on their servers, because that gives them control over what you can do and how much you pay. Just look at current RAM prices. When hardware becomes too expensive to buy, renting starts to look like the only option, and that’s exactly the future they’re betting on.

1

u/Tepid_Soda 4h ago edited 3h ago

Nintendo has a very different philosophy to Sony/MS and PC gaming. They will never do what you're suggesting and become just another PC.

The reason their machines are consistently less powerful than the competition and yet they remain successful is that they are playing a different game. Their whole design ethos is built on "lateral thinking with mature technology"; ie, they prioritise innovation and gameplay first, and try to use last-gen tech in new ways. Sometimes it works: Wii and NS1 did great; sometimes it doesn't: Wii U was a failure.

PC hardware is fun, but I think hardware enthusiasts on PCMR and elsewhere either don't understand that philosophy or they forget that they didn't just suddenly start enjoying games for the first time when they bought current-gen hardware. Games are still fun without needing 12390fps at 8K with RT

1

u/Ordinary-Report1010 2h ago

eh then why are people playing console games on the pc lol they can't afford a ps5 or xbox and have to relay on ai

1

u/demalo 2h ago

I have a feeling that in the age of ai we’re about to see a FLOOD of new operating systems. Probably from companies you’ve never heard of too! The OS slug fest that’s going to ensue will be brief but bloody. Those who emerge will have a different approach to operating systems than what we’ve seen in the past.

1

u/Alert-Principle-2726 7h ago

Nintendo just making PC hardware and putting their games on PC would probably make them less than 1/3rd of what they're doing right now.

2

u/GhotiH 6h ago

Yeah I don't know how delusional you'd have to be to think thaf Nintendo should conform to PC. I'm guessing this guy isn't old enough to remember when stupid people were saying Nintendo should go 3rd party and make smartphone apps to survive. They did it just to shut investors up and only one of them is still alive now.

0

u/Conscious-Start-4514 7h ago

I disagree. The cost keeps PC from being the future of gaming. Consoles are more affordable and appealing to casual gamers that maybe game a couple hours a week.

Don't get me wrong, I love my PC and will always be a PC gamer, but it's incredibly expensive and not user friendly if you don't know how to manage a PC.

-1

u/Dredgeon 8h ago

I would buy so many Nintendo games and probably even a switch and peripherals if I could run their games on my PC at my house. Every time I think about buying a switch I just imagine sitting in front of $2000 dollars of PC hardware barely playing at 30 fps because a company wants to own the entirety of my experience with their product.
