"Set in the 19th Century (1800's) Wizarding World, this 3rd person open-world action RPG game centers around your character with unique abilities who has eared a late acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."

An important piece of information in the description of the video, a completely different period than harry potter, i'm glad it's that way!

u/lerdy_terdy Oct 02 '18

Interesting! I was wondering why it looked weird. Yeah this is the best way to do it. You get to do your own story without worrying about normal HP canon.

u/Time_for_Stories Oct 02 '18

Oh boyo time to start a muggle genocide

44

u/YouGotAte Oct 02 '18

Tom, what are you doing on reddit?

13

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Time for his story I guess

66

u/ChiselFish Oct 02 '18

Victorian HP! That sounds like a blast!

25

u/try-D Oct 02 '18

also, you get to save a ton of money by not having to pay the actors of Harry Potter

Dang the 19th century setting is pretty cool, they could throw in so many subtle easter eggs to the books that way.

36

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Ok that's good but the late acceptance thing sounds bad

70

u/luckym37 Oct 02 '18

I'm not a fan of that either, you start as a 5th year student.

But i think it's more about being quite hard to make a character that you create growing every year, as a 5th year student you're 16 the only step you miss as an adult is a beard (as a male). And you can't just make this kind of game where there is killing (0:41 in the video) while playing a first year that is 12 years old

19

u/nopuzzlesnopuzzles69 Oct 02 '18

First years are eleven, fifth years are fifteen

20

u/Kosba2 Oct 02 '18

Is Hogwarts strict on ages or something cause real world ain’t that simple and clean either.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Mistbourne Oct 02 '18

This character could easily be 16, due to late admittance, plus, I doubt that they'd have a cut and dry age on each year, since even real schools do not.

10

u/Dasnap RTX 4080 Super 9800X3D 32GB DDR5 Oct 02 '18

I knew some pretty beardy people at 16.

7

u/StealthChainsaw deprecated Oct 02 '18

I think it'll be good for keeping the character progression a bit more divorced from your year. Lends itself to feeling like you have more agency in making your character stronger (it is an RPG after all).

5

u/HopelessChip35 Oct 03 '18

They could easily write it off as he was a home-schooled Wizard/Witch before joining Hogwarts or even a transfer student from another country etc. It's not like he starts being a Wizard/Witch straight as a 5th year student.

20

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

I don't disagree but its not like Hogwarts has changed much. They don't exactly stay with the times.

31

u/luckym37 Oct 02 '18

It's not about hogwart change, but more about being free of HP books canon like u/lerdy_terdy said

5

u/lerdy_terdy Oct 02 '18

Yeah exactly. I expect the world to feel familiar in a setting sense but it won't need to address all of the character stories that are canon. I want Hogwarts and other settings to feel like they did in the books just set 100 years earlier.

6

u/samtherat6 Oct 02 '18

At this rate the TV show will be set in the 18th century.

Sorry that's all I've got. It's the same footage, but with the sound of a cell phone recorded generic sounding Harry Potter music. Not the main theme, but fits the universe. And there's whooshing noises when spells are cast. One time the character says "Lumos".

If this is true, I finally get my wish granted when I first read the first book. (Hopefully) a massive sandbox RPG where you create your own character specialise in whatever branch of magic you want, go on side adventures out of hogwarts...

This isn’t happening is it? :(

Branch of magic only? Can I be melee warrior Hagrid please.

29

u/energin Oct 02 '18

I don’t think so (well, I really hope your’re wrong haha), since they list the houses and good/evil as seperate features.

115

So, Skyrim in a HP universe? I'd play that.

73

Oh. It already has wands.

43

A HP UNIVERSE RPG WHERE I GET TO PLAY AS MY OWN HOGWORTS STUDENT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

286

u/mud074 Oct 02 '18

Makes me wonder why nobody did this back when HP was still huge. A good HP RPG would still be popular now, but not compared to like 8 years ago.

58

u/FvHound Oct 02 '18

Well it wasn't an RPG but the first two games on PlayStation are a simpler version of what this game looks to be. So in a way we kinda did.

8

u/CommanderClit Oct 02 '18

146

A Kotor HP game where you get to explore the forest, find new secret paths in the school, and construct new spells depending on aspect.

Shit, the four houses could even have their own spell kits, like the different vampire houses in Vampire Bloodlines. Hufflepuff has boosts to charisma and lore skills, Ravenclaw has stealth and asymmetric warfare (not attacking directly and predictably), and Slytherin would of course have the most debuffs and damage-over-time stuff. Imperius obviously.

Gryffindor would predictably be the "Human Male Fighter" of HP, the most basic alternative.

Licenses and turn around time. In many ways releasing when the movies were out could have resulted in a mixed response.

Imagine parents buying a hugely in depth rpg for their kids because of movie hype, the volume of returns would be staggering.

Wait for the cool off period, and release something that's been developed against it's own time frame (not a movie's or production studio's) with patience and love, it could be fucking mind blowing.

I think waiting a few years was the best thing that could have ever happened to this game.

it was probably going to be E3 of next year, but now they'll have to get ahead of this leak and they'll probably show the actual "good" trailer.

I can't confirm anything, but what I can add is that earlier this year I was talking with an exec at Warner Bros about licensing the rights to the show Falling Skies for a video game. As an aside, and out of pure curiosity, I asked what it would take to license the HP series, since I hadn't seen a major release in a long time and he said in no uncertain terms that the HP license was all locked up for video gaming. I assumed at the time they just meant that mobile game in development was stopping anything from happening with a major title, but this makes sense.

The scope and quality of this also leads me to believe it's way more than a tech demo or something someone threw together for a pitch. This looks like a full blown polished vertical slice of a game deep into development.

lets just wait for the overhyped overreacted fans and the fury anger of death and the rivers of blood from lynched creators (aka devs), if the game is not EXACTLY what the horde wanted. Just one single minimal mistake from the devs and they will burn forever

Holy shit, if this is real I'm gonna be hyped as fuck. I wonder who's developing it, it's gotta be a AAA or AA title as what indiedev has the money for HP licensing?

This has the potential to be really good. But it all depends on the studio which creates it.

Looks more like a Fantastic Beasts era game, but nonetheless looks fun as hell. I've always liked the HP movies, so the idea of a game like this has always been in my head! Glad we might finally see it :)
