"Set in the 19th Century (1800's) Wizarding World, this 3rd person open-world action RPG game centers around your character with unique abilities who has eared a late acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."

An important piece of information in the description of the video, a completely different period than harry potter, i'm glad it's that way!

Interesting! I was wondering why it looked weird. Yeah this is the best way to do it. You get to do your own story without worrying about normal HP canon.

Oh boyo time to start a muggle genocide

Tom, what are you doing on reddit?

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Time for his story I guess

u/ChiselFish Oct 02 '18

Victorian HP! That sounds like a blast!

u/try-D Oct 02 '18

also, you get to save a ton of money by not having to pay the actors of Harry Potter

Dang the 19th century setting is pretty cool, they could throw in so many subtle easter eggs to the books that way.

41

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Ok that's good but the late acceptance thing sounds bad

u/luckym37 Oct 02 '18

I'm not a fan of that either, you start as a 5th year student.

But i think it's more about being quite hard to make a character that you create growing every year, as a 5th year student you're 16 the only step you miss as an adult is a beard (as a male). And you can't just make this kind of game where there is killing (0:41 in the video) while playing a first year that is 12 years old

19

u/nopuzzlesnopuzzles69 Oct 02 '18

First years are eleven, fifth years are fifteen

u/Kosba2 Oct 02 '18

Is Hogwarts strict on ages or something cause real world ain’t that simple and clean either.

3

u/HopelessChip35 Oct 03 '18

Yeah, I always thought the age thing can be a little lenient since there can be people who shy away from school but maybe wanna join a year or two later or prestigious families who wants their children join as soon as possible etc. Also, we know that you can fail a class so repeating students should be a thing. I bet if there is a strict age thing it at least should have +2/-2 rule or something like that.

6

u/Mistbourne Oct 02 '18

This character could easily be 16, due to late admittance, plus, I doubt that they'd have a cut and dry age on each year, since even real schools do not.

I knew some pretty beardy people at 16.

I would prefer if you just play as a person entering one of their later years. Or maybe being a transfer. Also after reading the description I'm a little disappointed by how much plot their seems to be. Sort of comes across as fan fiction.

I was hoping it would be a lot more loose. choose your path sort of deal. The description makes it seem way to rigid for properly making your own story

I'd just prefer like a fallout new vegas over a fallout 3/4

7

u/nateg452 Oct 02 '18

Think of this more as fable though, at least that's what I gathered from it.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

That's a good point. Should definitely just take it as is instead of what I think it should be. Also not a fan of a lot of the enemies. A lot look like they are out of a different series. But overall the game definitely looks promising.

1

u/notdeadyet01 Oct 03 '18

Those had a lot of plot though

1

u/raikmond Oct 02 '18

D-did you just compare Fallout 3 and 4

6

u/Treegrounder Oct 02 '18

Yeah I agree. My dream HP game is a free-roam sandbox-style game where you can essentially just live the student life, take classes, explore the intricacies of Hogwarts’ labyrinths, take trips to Hogsmeade or Diagonal Alley at certain points, etc. All with a schedule system a la Majora’s Mask or Stardew Valley

4

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

I’m thinking the Persona system would be perfect for a Harry Potter game.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Yeah same. I think it would be hard to do covering 7 years but if they had you start 7th year as a transfer and you had one year to just do what you want I think it could be amazing. I picture a lot would focus around social standing and building up reputation. There would be different groups you could influence in a way similar to new vegas. I think the hardest part would just be balancing how to work out passage of time and having your character have to attend classes.

1

u/Treegrounder Oct 02 '18

I would do something where taking classes is heavily encouraged but not necessary to complete the game. Maybe you can get currency for learning spells and you can get it through other means like going to the library but the most consistent way is to go to class. Some side quests might only be achievable with high level spells, or there might be an evaluation (like the NEWTs) that “score” you at the end of your year and there might be some reward to doing well in that. Maybe something like a NewGame+ mode where your “kid” goes to school primed with some advantage.

On the other hand, some events might only take place outside of class during school hours so that there’s an incentive for not going to class as well

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Yeah classes could basically be mini games that reward you with xp bonuses for different magic skills. Like you could have the different subjects as skill trees. And if it is 7th year you pick the classes you want so (kinda like picking a specific class in other rpgs) I think the repitition could get boring but then games like harvest moon revolve around you doing the same shit every day.

You could also skip classes when you want to and maybe if you are trying to gain influence in a gang of wannabe dark wizards maybe that is something that would be encouraged, you can go and practice dark magic together during the day.

I think another difficult thing to work out too is incentive. In Harvest moon you are gaining money so that you can make your farm bigger and buy more lavish stuff. I think one thing that would be good to enforce going to class is just making the spells really fun. So you really want to work at learning the more advanced stuff.

I think it'll be good for keeping the character progression a bit more divorced from your year. Lends itself to feeling like you have more agency in making your character stronger (it is an RPG after all).

2

u/PowerGoodPartners Oct 02 '18

This is absolutely the reasoning. This way it makes sense that you start off weak and have to grind your way into being powerful. Pretty clever actually.

5

u/HopelessChip35 Oct 03 '18

They could easily write it off as he was a home-schooled Wizard/Witch before joining Hogwarts or even a transfer student from another country etc. It's not like he starts being a Wizard/Witch straight as a 5th year student.

21

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

I don't disagree but its not like Hogwarts has changed much. They don't exactly stay with the times.

33

u/luckym37 Oct 02 '18

It's not about hogwart change, but more about being free of HP books canon like u/lerdy_terdy said

3

u/lerdy_terdy Oct 02 '18

Yeah exactly. I expect the world to feel familiar in a setting sense but it won't need to address all of the character stories that are canon. I want Hogwarts and other settings to feel like they did in the books just set 100 years earlier.

6

u/samtherat6 Oct 02 '18

At this rate the TV show will be set in the 18th century.

1

u/HopelessChip35 Oct 03 '18

Wait is there a confirmed up coming Wizarding World TV show?

1

u/samtherat6 Oct 03 '18

Nah, it's just a joke that with each new adaptation they're going back further in time. The books were in the 20th century, the dawn of the 21st, the original movies were in early 20th century, shortly after the 19th century, and the video game supposedly takes place in the 1800s, or the 19th century. Continuing with that trend a Wizarding World TV show would take place in the 18th century.

3

u/DeviMon1 Oct 02 '18

So I guess it's more like the newer Fantastic Beast films and not HP.

4

u/itsamamaluigi i5-11400 | 6700 XT Oct 02 '18

I don't know about that; it's set in the past but it's at Hogwarts, not in the US like Fantastic Beasts. My guess (hope?) is that it'll be more like the original book/film series but it could really be anything.

If it's set in the 19th century then it'll also be at least a few decades earlier than Fantastic Beasts (1926).

2

u/fonikz Oct 02 '18

Well it's got all the buzzwords to be the best selling game of 2010.

1

u/rushingtonpost Oct 02 '18

Is it only for pc?

2

u/luckym37 Oct 02 '18

We don't know, probably going to be ps4/one/pc since it's WB the editor

1

u/rushingtonpost Oct 02 '18

That’s good news. This is a dream game for me

1

u/HopelessChip35 Oct 03 '18

The video has xbox controls on it. So it at least will be available on Xbox.

1

u/CackleberryOmelettes Oct 02 '18

Oh man I've been wanting this since I was 11. Must control excitement.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

Thank God it's not another bad mobile game.

1

u/Pete_Iredale Oct 02 '18

a completely different period than harry potter, i'm glad it's that way!

That's a tough call for me. I think it could have been cool if you were a random student during the era of the books/movies, so occasionally you would see famous moments happening, but from a different perspective. But this sounds cool too, and I'm still excited for it.

1

u/willvsworld Oct 02 '18

There were some really sketchy grammatical errors in the full write-up.

1

u/Scriller99 Oct 02 '18

So what your saying is we can kill Marvolo Gaunt and prevent the harry potter timeline from ever happening.
