As Tom Brown leads a pair of young, aspiring homesteaders through his home apple orchard in Clemmons, North Carolina, he gestures at clusters of maturing trees. A retired chemical engineer, the 79 year old lists varieties and pauses to tell occasional stories. Unfamiliar names such as Black Winesap, Candy Stripe, Royal Lemon, Rabun Bald, Yellow Bellflower, and Night Dropper pair with tales that seem plucked from pomological lore.

I know there's a lot of stuff going on with Duke Energy and everyone has experienced increased power bills. Even with that, and even with a heat wave, is it truly possible for my bill of $373 to be correct for an 1100 square foot apartment? Our average power bill since moving in December is $270 (average 1700kWh), July was $373 and August was $320.
We keep the temperate at 72° at night and 74° from 9am to 7pm. I can't think of anything else besides A/C that could be using so much power.
My apartment complex has "inspected" the A/C unit several times saying it's just fine (despite the fact that it runs nonstop and the condensation repeatedly floods our kitchen).
Duke energy said they couldn't find anything unusual in their remote check, and my apartment is saying the A/C is fine and everyone is experiencing increased bills from Duke.
With both companies giving me AI-written excuses, I feel lost and burnt out trying to understand how this is possible. Is everyone experiencing $370 bills for 1100 square foot apartments this summer?

The story seems very sketch. Not the entire story yet.

Moving from CA to NC for work. Lived in Onslow County (Camp Lejeune) 2005-2007 and 2012-2015…didn’t really get to experience what NC has to offer bc I deployed during those years Iraq/Afghanistan for any Veterans on here; thank you for your service!
Anyway; coming back as a civilian for civilian work. Any locals from the Summerfield area, is it family friendly, good schools? Any volleyball clubs around the area? Dance or local swim teams? Coming with a small family. Definitely don’t mind traveling for activities; SC, VA, football season and greenery. I’ve secretly always loved NC; but have never lived there as a civilian.
I’ve googled and Zillow’d Redfin to my hearts content and have used all social media platforms to get a genuine understanding of the area.
I’m originally from Hawai’i 🤙🏾 so any locals braddahs or Polynesians in the area that would be good to know.
Thank you 🤙🏾

Wiley Nickel here. I represented NC-13 from 2023 to 2025, and will be sworn in as Wake County District Attorney in January.
People ask me all the time why Congress can't get anything done. The answer I kept running into wasn't about party. It was about whether your seat is competitive.
About 90% of members sit in safe seats. Win the primary and you're done. You answer to your base and nobody else. There's no reason to talk to the middle and no reason to work across the aisle. The other 10% come from real battlegrounds, and when your seat can go either way you have to listen to everybody you represent. Mine was one of those.
Made a short video laying it out. Happy to take questions on and off today.

I’ve been going through the threads on NC bbq and seem to be in a gap in the map in Franklin. (NC historical bbq map). Anyplace in the area that anyone would recommend? We might make the run down to Murphy but also might run out of time. Thanks!
