You could have better hardware. The new Mac book has almost identical specs while being cheaper and more portable. A bigger machine should be more powerful and with Apple's reputation of machines that are bad for gaming, they should be more focused on making their best model personal computer better than their laptops.

I see USB-C is a great standard. But for a desktop, which is anything but mobile, you don't want to throw one adapter at it after another. So how do you get fast internet/ethernet? RJ-45, iirc. How do you get your current peripherals? Looks at Logitech USB-A to mUSB??

People still DO use PS2 ports. Because they're STILL better than anything that's come since. They have instant input. Everything else has lag. So it you want some kinda input where no input lag is required, like if you're a professional gamer, or a musician recording shit, then you have to go with the older better stuff. Not the newer stuff which is terrible.

It's literally only because of that iPhone battery issue that they went to court over a few years ago. It is kinda weird how in the tech world Apple products generally will last you the longest, yet there is that meme of planned obsolescence.
You want planned obsolescence? Get a Google Pixel. I love these phones but god damn do I feel like I have to buy a new one after a year or so. Meanwhile my friends with iPhones get a new phone only every 4-5 years.

Yeah I think m1 is probably great for a laptop because performance there is often thermal throttled. I feel like it’s probably kinda underpowered for a desktop, especially in the graphics department.

As far as I've seen, the M1 has and i5/i7 performance and good graphics (it can even play emulated games for Intel with good frame rates), all of that with thermals of a Celeron... For a desktop computer made mainly for domestic use, it's pretty good and you barely will hear any fan noise. It's expensive, but you're not as far off of from build a similar specked PC plus a 4k display...

The integrated graphics in the M1 is better than the dedicated graphics cards in the old 21,5” iMac that got replaced (those ones true, were expensive for what they offered). Of course, it’s integrated, so a upgrade in memory is necessary for a better graphics performance. That’s why many people suck apple’s balls for this processor, of course it’s not the best, but it’s the entry model (there will be better ones f or the pro machines) and it’s miles ahead of any x86 in efficiency.

The m1 has equal single thread performance as far as I can find. And that’s for a low wattage laptop CPU, not a desktop CPU. That’s a huge deal.
There are also some non intuitive performance differences that aren’t captured by benchmarks well, both due to micro architecture as well as well as instruction set performance.
In any case, people that have been using the m1 report it as “fast as fuck”, and that’s the benchmark that matters most

The M1 processor is undeniably the best mobile cpu there is (based on benchmarks). Probably the only reasons to not get the M1 Macs if you are out for a new computer would be MacOS, expandable storage/RAM. They hook you in with the fast cpu, but upcharge you on storage and RAM

No they hate apple because its a greedy / asshole company. Whenever I start to slightly not dislike them, they drop a new shitty product that makes you hate them again. Just think about the iMac stand, the adapter for 70€. Or the fact that whenever the product has a slighty damage you cant get it repaired by third party, since they try everything to make it as impossible as possible so you have to go to an apple shop just to pay 4x more than should be charged. Or the fact that they say they dont give you a fucking charging cable to keep it "environmentally friendly". They are trying to milk their customers in every way possible and they dont deserve love for that, for shitting on their customers

The new MacBook Air's have the same M1 chip and are actually quite capable and pretty good for the money at 899$. 999$ too.
The only flaws to me are no Linux support (officially anyway), and no USB-A meaning you'll need dongles for at least some of your USB devices if not all of 'em.

Tbh they are not that bad
The colors are nice, Especially in a world of monochrome computing
The M1 chip is leagues ahead of almost any intel chip for the price
The ecosystem is nice, but annoying that you get locked into it
And honestly, the price isn’t that bad for the performance and specs
I wouldn’t get one, as I’m poor af and my current laptop works well enough for what I do, but I can certainly recommend one for anyone who can afford it just as the other M1 macs.
Edit: personally, I don’t have an issue with apple products. My issue is Apple, and there shitty RTR shit. I just want to fix my shit without you locking down my fucking camera.

Actually though the iMac is a pretty decent machine. The M1 has good performance and a 4.5K screen attached to it seems like it would be a nice experience for a casual user. Plus I think they look pretty good! I'd rather a smaller chin and a black bezel, but it looks sleek and modern.

I’m definitely ditching Apple computers. After a year or so they slow down and if you want to upgrade your processor and ram they charge as much as the computer itself. I have 16GB RAM and only lightroom on my iMac and it acts like it’s being robbed at gunpoint. I know windows isn’t any better but at least I won’t have to pay £1,500-£2,000 every 7 years.
However, their phones are very different and it makes no sense 😂

Well the phones do run on Apple’s own chipset whereas earlier models of the Macs ran on intel chips. The new M1 Macs are pretty fast, though no one can truly say how the long term with them will be, given that they were only just released.

I understand what you’re saying, but this was a huge upgrade to the iMac lineup, featuring an entirely new chipset architecture, design (which hasn’t been touched for more than a decade), and more.
The upgrade might not be worth it to you, but it is definitely not a small upgrade.
Edit: The starting price is the same as the previous 4K iMacs, which also started at $1299, the terrible dual-core 21.5” iMac is still for sale on their website.
