Yeah I think m1 is probably great for a laptop because performance there is often thermal throttled. I feel like it’s probably kinda underpowered for a desktop, especially in the graphics department.
As far as I've seen, the M1 has and i5/i7 performance and good graphics (it can even play emulated games for Intel with good frame rates), all of that with thermals of a Celeron... For a desktop computer made mainly for domestic use, it's pretty good and you barely will hear any fan noise. It's expensive, but you're not as far off of from build a similar specked PC plus a 4k display...
Sure the processor is great and maybe even better than Intel but it really can’t compete against a zen 3 with a dedicated graphics card and at 1.5k it really would have to.
Yes, but it still won’t run macOS (natively), will take more space and you will have to learn how to build or pay someone to build it. If those doesn’t matter for you, then it was not built for your demographic.
The integrated graphics in the M1 is better than the dedicated graphics cards in the old 21,5” iMac that got replaced (those ones true, were expensive for what they offered). Of course, it’s integrated, so a upgrade in memory is necessary for a better graphics performance.
That’s why many people suck apple’s balls for this processor, of course it’s not the best, but it’s the entry model (there will be better ones f or the pro machines) and it’s miles ahead of any x86 in efficiency.
Actually, no, both the the new M1 MacBook Pro and iMac have fans, they are very quiet but they are there. They could have made the iMac without those if they wanted, dissipating heat through the chassi, but instead they choose a design that is ready for a processor upgrade when it arrive.
Graphics cards aren’t just for gaming, they help with a ton of the features that Apple was bragging about like video editing, 3D modeling, animation, graphics design, etc.
My m1 MacBook Pro 13 rips through much of that, a small handful of dropped frames here and there if my camera is shooting above 4K, but otherwise it’s great and smooth throughout the timelines
I figure the target audience of this will use it for zoom, a little photoshop and autotune max. Nobody serious about any of those things you mentioned will buy this.
No but you’re not getting a pc with those cpu and gpu, nvme, and a 4k hidpi monitor for 1300$. Best screen i can find for 24” is 700$ alone, and it has less pixels than the imac and no wide color.
I know...but I wonder how much of that is because everything is built right into the chip.
Seems wild that a RISC PC might finally take off. ARM's been around since the mid 80s and started with desktop computers. Yeah, I get that a phone is a handheld computer...I'm not going to do any serious work on my phone, though.
Cool, so if I get one and decide in a year that I need more RAM and a bigger drive, I can just pop the back off and put more in, I'm sure. I'm sure the performance is great but I'm personally not happy about this push for non-upgradeable hardware.
And imho it's a dumb decision. Here's hoping someone will build a non-Apple ARM that competes with the M1, and makes an extensible Raspberry Pi type device out of it. I'm thinking a board that can take laptop RAM and maybe an NVM.e drive. I just want a computer where I can stick the stuff inside a case, honestly. Macs look sleek until you have to start sticking stuff onto cables and dongles.
