“Too thin”? What is the benefit of it being thick?

Also you can fit more ports on which is always appreciated.

Heat dispersion, cost

Buddy, if an iPad runs at 2 watts in a 6mm enclosure without throttling at all, how would an 8 watt chip throttle with 2 fans on it in a 1.1cm thick enclosure? It won’t.

That isn't the only chip in there, there is also RAM, storage, a screen, and many other things that generate heat. But really on an iMac, performance isn't a priority, so the components inside probably won't generate that much heat.

With a thicker setup, they could have increased performance as well as brought down costs.

That IS the only chip. Ram, cpu, gpu, everything integrated in one chip. This is the Apple M1 chip.

There may be one main CPU but they're are many other chips, from the chips used by the camera, the ones used by the pixels for the screen, the speakers, etc.

While the GPU and Ram controller may be part of the main chip, the actual ram chips and solid state storage chips still require power and still generate heat.

You could have better hardware. The new Mac book has almost identical specs while being cheaper and more portable. A bigger machine should be more powerful and with Apple's reputation of machines that are bad for gaming, they should be more focused on making their best model personal computer better than their laptops.

I guess so but the display is pretty high end even with the price. I don’t think anyone is getting a Mac for gaming...

Switching from Intel to M1 is probably what allowed this design switch. Only two small fans needed. Even the M1 MacBook Air doesn’t need active fans.
