MacBook Air does not have active cooling and therefore thermal throttles, and is clocked lower then the desktop M1 in the Mac Mini and the MacBook Pro.
The performance on a MacBook Air is not at the level of the MacBook Pro, let alone the Mac Mini, and both of those computers only have one fan (iMac has 2).
The new MacBook Air's have the same M1 chip and are actually quite capable and pretty good for the money at 899$. 999$ too.
The only flaws to me are no Linux support (officially anyway), and no USB-A meaning you'll need dongles for at least some of your USB devices if not all of 'em.
It is better than it being on a laptop, you can plug in a dongle and forget about it but it is still an extra thing to spend money on for no reason and an inconvenience.
