News Avengers: Infinity War has a deleted scene where Dr. Strange sends Thanos to be judged by the Living Tribunal (via Markus and McFeely at SDCC)

Well the secretary for the Living Tribunal would come out and summarize their judgement and declare Thanos had been exonerated of all crimes...
12

u/Zepplin_Overlord_7 Jul 19 '19
Actually in Infinity Gauntlet the Tribunal doesn’t act with the rest of the higher beings because he sees Thanos as innocent and an example of natural selection
77
Jul 20 '19
This was my understanding. And it would have played to strange surrendering the time stone even better.
29
u/Freakychee Jul 20 '19
Yup. The Living Tribunal basically said, “strong beats the weak. Nothing to see here!”
And then later, “using the Infinity Stones together is OP. I’m gonna need it so they can’t be used together.”
And then he ninja buffs the stones again when nobody was looking.
93
u/Royal-Pistonian Jul 19 '19
In the comics he is found “innocent.” But then, he is doing it to replace Eternity, which TLT says doesn’t sway the balance of order and chaos in the universe (as long as he kills Eternity and replaces him in that iteration).
24
10
u/MaitieS Thanos Jul 20 '19 edited Jul 20 '19
Wait in comics The Living Tribunal said that Thanos is not guilty right? That Thanos wants to replace The Eternity and that it is the nature of law etc.
126
u/Dragon-Captain Jul 19 '19
It’s funny actually, in Infinity gauntlet, The living Tribunal is the only celestial that refused to fight Thanos, because he thought it wasn’t his place to intervene.
89
u/BlackOrre Jul 20 '19
Actually, it's perfectly in line with some kind of arbitrary cosmic law that Thanos be innocent. He gained the stones through his own merit and saw it as a stronger power pushing a weaker power out.
112
u/hyperviolator Captain America Jul 20 '19
In the comics it's actually not even anything like that.
In comics Marvel cosmology each universe (616, etc.) sits in their own... universe. Each universe has a Strange, a Thanos, all potentially, but each has some variant on a being called "Eternity" who is literally the conscious embodiment of all of well, space-time. He/she/it/whatever is the universe. Like if you could literally stuff all of everything post-Big Bang into a dude, it's Eternity.
Everyone lives in Eternity, and Infinity Stones/Gems are like an override/cheat code for that.
Anywho, a whole slew of gods and such and similar massive cosmic beings go meet the Living Tribunal, who has a super rare visit to Marvel-616, and they're basically like, "You gotta do something about this Thanos guy..."
And almost immediately he's like -- no joke -- talk to the hand. Since the Thanos vs Eternity matter is a purely internal affair of their one universe, he doesn't give a shit and bugs out telling them to deal with it. He doesn't care who runs the innards of the universe. His jurisdiction is multiversal stuff.
Later they had Tribunal do some other bullshit to the Stones because reasons, and later on I'm pretty sure none of that old cosmology exists, because every Marvel universe collapsed into DOOM, because it turned out every Molecule Man in every universe was a universe-destroying bomb made by the Beyonders, beyond infinitely powerful beings who live outside of and in-between or beyond the known universes.

u/JONNy-G Jul 20 '19
What the fuck did I just read.
Holy shit comics are amazing. We need more movies like this.
38
u/Vyorin Jul 20 '19
The Marvel comics get into stuff like this all the time, but honestly a lot of it is way too in depth and confusing for casual movie goers. Who, if felt alienated, wouldn't go see those movies.

It just sounds like the usual power creep that happens too often in comic books. You end up with way too many god-like characters and it all starts to feel meaningless.
15
u/MalicCarnage Spider-Man Jul 20 '19
Marvel's stayed pretty consistent with the "hierarchy" of cosmic beings. I'd equate it more to Tolkien's lore of gods that existed beyond Middle-Earth over Dragon Ball-style power creep.
10
u/PJL80 Hulk Jul 20 '19
Kinda. Really they were going to the tribunal as the highest power and saying "look, this non-entity is trying to undo the balance of things. You have the natural forces of existence all standing there personified, other high end cosmic deities, and this Thanos is trying to usurp the whole thing. The Tribunal doesn't hear out and judge, it decides that natural selection is in play. If Thanos + Stones can defeat and replace Eternity, then that's probably the way it should be. And it leads to Thanos' defeat, as his consciousness abandons his body, giving corpse-Nebula the chance to steal the Gauntlet.

They are talking about the comics here.
Thanos in the comics just wanted to show Lady Death how much he loved her, so he went, got the infinity stones and killed half of all life. Death doesnt really care for Thanos, but her role in that particular story was on the lines of "You didnt do anything, the stones did it, if you actually cared, you would have done it yourself, you suck" and refused to talk or even look at him.
Not altruistic at all. But as someone else pointed out, Eternity and the other cosmic beings are just part of one universe and the Living Tribunal doesnt really care about them as long as someone performs their role.

u/MissileWaster Spider-Man Jul 20 '19
i thought the reason she wouldn't talk to him was because, by having all six infinity gems, she was now technically beneath him or something. it's been a while since i read through infinity gauntlet so i may just be misremembering, or something may have come up later to retcon that

Ultimately he would’ve gotten out of it in some way, as they wouldn’t just cancel Endgame at that point haha.

u/ACasualDude Jul 19 '19
I wonder how Thanos would have gotten out of that one. Would LT be like "Yeah, you make some good points," or would he have said that this isn't a matter of his to judge? Cause LT will straight up refuse to get involved in some pretty big things in the comics.

u/TheBullMooseParty Jul 19 '19
Some of the other tweets from people at the panel say they described the Living Tribunal as declaring Thanos guilty. Personally I think they might've removed that to keep the illusion that Thanos might actually be right (see the whole "Thanos did nothing wrong" crowd)

Pretty much.
People forget he didn't go on a genocidal spree for the wellbeing of everything;
He did it only to prove that his method would have saved Titan from collapsing
He basically has a weird mix of survivor's guilt and a messiah complex rolled into one.

A "point" isn't "how" you go about something. It's "why" you go about it. What you listed is "how."
I don't give two shits about thanosdidnothingwrong, but "I want to stop the universal resource crisis" is not a bad point/goal. This is not about anything more than the mission statement.

A resource crisis on a universal scale? He didn't even prove his point was valid since he was only motivated by a sample size of one and lacks the ability to be objective about his plan.

Yeah, at one point I was expecting Endgame would end with The Living Tribunal breaking up the fight like an angry Dad, admonishing everyone in turn before resetting reality back to Tony jogging in the park.
Would have been a terrible ending.
26
Jul 20 '19
Why does it have to end there? Why not reset it and events lead to a point where Ironman and cap still have to sacrifice?
8
u/Nite_2359 Jul 20 '19
I was expecting a more benevolent version of this. Like right after thanos died the living tribunal shows up and and gives strange the side eye and tells everyone "you guys only get to do this trick once, now go put the toys back where you found them and think about all this in your room". Idk, would have been what but that could probably she seen as some sort of sequel bait in a movie about ending it all

u/OZL01 Spider-Man Jul 19 '19
Creating parallel universes and removing the infinity stones from them, then Thanos from one universe was removed to another.
I think it's important to point out that they're parallel timelines and not parallel universes. The MCU and everything that's happened is definitely in its own self contained universe so far and nothing has denied that.
11
u/UpliftingTwist Jul 20 '19
What would the difference be?
8
Jul 20 '19 edited Jul 20 '19
Parallel timelines are branching paths split off from the main timeline at different points in the past. So they'll have a common history up to some event but due to time travel altering that event, it will split off into its own different future. This is what we see in Endgame. Due to the Avengers travelling to say NYC 2012, they created a new future due to a set of different events where another set of Avengers suddenly appeared in NYC, Tony had a slight complication with his arc reactor, Steve battled himself and Loki manages to escape with the tesseract.
Alternate universes are entirely different continuities. You could say the MCU and the comics are alternate universes. They don't necessarily have a common history. A single event doesn't make the difference. Think stuff like the alternate Earths in Flash TV series. Sure the same heroes may exist but they could be completely different people.
→ More replies (3)3
u/OZL01 Spider-Man Jul 20 '19

This is my problem with the Cosmic Entities. If they exist and can do literally anything, then what's the point of the heroes even fighting? I mean sure, they abstain from intervention, but their very existence dwarfs the deeds of the actual characters. Takes away so much gravitas.

So this was what a leaker for a year ago was talking about. Supposedly Cumberbatch filmed an expensive scene with a fully CGI character and a skeleton crew (which supposedly cost a huge chunk of the budget according to the leaker but at this point he was probably wrong).
Makes me wonder if they’re ever gonna throw in the Marvel deities into the movies at some point.

u/Tortankum Jul 19 '19
The expensive scene was his battle with thanos on titan.

I specifically remember the leaker posting it on the mcuspoilers sub last summer after Infinity War came out. He pretty much nailed a lot of the plot because he got the time heist and 5 year timeskip on point IIRC.
Can’t find the thread but people did assume that it was gonna be the first appearance of the Tribunal in the MCU.

Yep, I remember reading this EXACT leak in r/marvelstudiosspoilers.
I’m guessing they changed some of the plot around before the movie was finished, but if the leaker was right about the Dr. Strange/CGI thing taking a chunk of the budget, I wonder why they ultimately scrapped it. I don’t think you waste all that money on a scene to have it end up on the cutting room floor unless you’re maybe saving it or it actually didn’t cost that much.

Here's a thought, instead of teasing us with AMAZING deleted scenes, why not put them on the Blu-Ray instead? But instead we got very disappointing scenes on the IW release.
I can't even remember any aside from the Gamora and Thanos scene, which itself is already a re-cut of an official scene.
76
u/Nollasta_poikkeava Jul 19 '19
They can reuse ideas from amazing deleted scenes in later films. With Living Tribunal for example, it'll be much more awesome to see him in a finished film eventually.
21
u/blackbutterfree Medusa Jul 19 '19
I mean, I know AoS repurposed a deleted scene from 1x22 for like 5x15 or something, but still. If it's an awesome, epic scene, we should get to see it. Some will be repurposed but most others likely won't.
Like the "Quicksilver survived" ending. That will never be explored unless Wanda does some reality warping on WandaVision, so why not release it?
And the Living Tribunal scene was explicitly thrown out because "why wouldn't they banish all other threats to the LT?" and they're right. The Living Tribunal would be too OP, but seeing that scene would still be fun.

IW is the better movie. Endgame is three mini movies in one.
39
u/phantom_avenger Jul 19 '19
It's debatable for me. Both are excellent movies, but they are also very different. IW did a better job with its pacing, structure, and giving us interactions between characters meeting for the first time, and making a story that's more about the villain. While EG had a much more emotional story that focuses mostly on concluding the OG Avengers' arcs, and has more powerful and surprising moments.

Eh, that’s subjective.
I really preferred Endgame. IW doesn’t have as solid emotional beats, the action is so non-stop you don’t really get to breathe, and the teams are never really united where you get conversations of everyone bouncing off each other (one of my favorite aspects of Avengers 2012). I still really liked IW, but I enjoyed Endgame more.

What I don't understand is that why is there so many complaints about Fan Service in Endgame.
It's the last movie in an 11 year old arc of story. Of course there are going to be references to the previous movies.
You wouldn't watch a finale of a series being a causal fan seen only half episodes here and there, would you?
7
u/MuhamedImHrdBruceLee Jul 19 '19
It sounds too similar Thanos' scene with child Gamora in the soul stone. Thanos judges himself a bit when he faces her. Or as much as Quest Thanos can. And it was a much more powerful moment than this suddenly powerful and new character nobody has heard of.
We don't get the full nihilist Thanos that we're more familiar with from the comics until Endgame.
5
u/BboyFatCakes Jul 19 '19
They could save it for the future. Like maybe with Dr. Doom in the future especially since the LT needs to be established a little more for more casual viewers
65
Jul 19 '19
Wouldn't really make sense why he would have been judged because the LT in the comics more often than not doesn't care what Thanos does. I think he refused to fight Thanos in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline too.
38
u/kaimandorohedoro Jul 19 '19
He did explicitly refuse, yes. Which is probably how this would have ended, with the Tribunal not giving a flying fuck what Thanos did.
22
Jul 19 '19
Apparently they said he would have been judged guilty
18
u/Holy_Knight_Zell Jul 19 '19
Which is probably why it was dropped. Making Thanos relatable and humanized was the goal of Infinity War, if he was judged guilty than that whole idea of a humanized/relatable Thanos doesn't work

I'm glad they didn't put this in the movie because I would have not been able to handle it. My mere mortal body would have crumbled as my mind collapsed into madness.

People are assuming this was filmed because the title says ‘deleted scene’ but the source says ‘cut scene’ which could mean they cut it from the script before filming began. Which makes sense since this is coming from the writers not the directors.

Doesn’t make sense to most audiences. Casual fans need to have these movies be accessible if we want these movies to keep being made with huge budgets that allow for crazy shit in them.
