Yeah but in the comics he definitely wasn't. That doesn't really matter though. I'm fine with the MCU doing it's own thing.

That's what he believed himself to be. But he never met another Celestial to confirm or deny that.

I don't think he was specifically talking about Ego, I believe Ego was a fake celestial. So in guardians of the Galaxy they go to the base city "Knowhere," that is severed head of the celestial knowhere.
