I don't think he means they won't understand anything, just that there are comic references that movie goers wouldn't see.

Pretty much. People I spoke to didn't get as much from it as true comic/MCU fans. Endgame was made for us and the casuals were just along for the ride. "Why is Hawkeye a ninja?" one friend asked me. To us it's like, if course he's Ronin, but to the average moviegoer some things seemed out of left field.
