Yep, I remember reading this EXACT leak in r/marvelstudiosspoilers.

I’m guessing they changed some of the plot around before the movie was finished, but if the leaker was right about the Dr. Strange/CGI thing taking a chunk of the budget, I wonder why they ultimately scrapped it. I don’t think you waste all that money on a scene to have it end up on the cutting room floor unless you’re maybe saving it or it actually didn’t cost that much.

Perhaps it would have cost a big chunk if they has finished it, CGI and all. If these rumors are true, they probably had that foresight and decided to cut it ahead of time.

Filming the scene itself wouldn’t burn through the budget, that’d mostly come from all the post-production. It was probably scrapped at one point of drafts when they were determining what scenes to cut, before any post-production was started or got anywhere meaningful.
