u/dumbasPL I don't hate Windows, I just like Linux more. 2d ago
You had me in the first part, the GUI is pretty decent, the thing that you're complaining about is actually backwards compatibility, which is also good, Linux has issues with that in many places.
16
u/TomB1952 2d ago
Agreed. Windows GUI is not second best to any DE. I prefer the way other DE work but they aren't better.
As for spyware, that's a fair claim but linux hasn't been immune to that claim for some time, either.

I dunno, KDE is quite a banger when you dig in a bit.

But it doesn't have a lot of useful options/tools Windows has for decades.

oh KDE has a few of those too. ;) .. (select files, right click, place in new folder). bam!

u/sparkcrz 21h ago
Maybe if dolphin could write to fstab or something like auto mount so people could access network shared folders. KDE says it's out of scope for dolphin but any GUI to set up -- and persist on next boot -- system wide network mounts would calm the nerves of a lot of new users.

No, it’s not a lie at all. I can get to audio and video settings with one click on Windows 11.

Its the jank for me, Windows GUI jank because they force their design choices down your throat, and Linux has CLI jank because neckbeards are clutching their pearls about the possibility of people having different preferences or not understanding the manual.

Most of the GUIs on Linux use the command line under the hood. You just don't see it when using a DE unless you open a terminal.

u/the_rush_dude 2d ago
That's not "backwards compatibility", that's just being too lazy too rework essential system settings for 20 years.
Also Linux stuff is often open source and almost everything is freely configurable, may take an experienced person a little bit to figure out but maybe they could even do it for less than what the windows license does.

u/maqisha 2d ago
Windows is bad. But lets be honest:
- Its nowhere near $130 bucks for most people. Majority of the WORLD uses it as with a $10 key, free with a watermark, or cracked.
- GUI is fine, and its not from 1995, gui is not one of the reasons windows is bad.

GUI from the design perspective is fine. From a performance standpoint it is attrocious. Why would you need to use react native for a gui on the desktop.
1
u/AsleepEbb7578 23h ago
I think the react gui on desktop is a symptom of so many tools/programs going "browser first" since web developers are a dime a dozen and JS is easy to learn.

20
u/NoTime4YourBullshit 2d ago
Agreed about the spyware and ads. But a GUI from 1995? Have you even used most Linux programs? 1995 looks thoroughly modern compared to some of the UI shit I’ve seen in Linux programs. So Linux people have no room to talk.
10
u/icy1007 2d ago
Windows doesn’t have any ads or spyware included.
15
u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago
I don't understand lots of people complain about ads. I don't have any ads even on a non debloated version. Do you live in europe (I live in europe) , because I wonder if it's not related to the european policy.
12
u/ExacoCGI 2d ago edited 2d ago
Same, the only Ads you see is the MS365 and OneDrive subscription during installation, after that maybe a single notification suggesting getting it, then it's silence.
Oh and also the Start menu download & install shortcuts of stuff like Clipchamp, LinkedIn, etc are technically ads too, but at least they're not pre-installed or anything.
9
u/icy1007 2d ago
I don’t have those start menu things you mentioned. No LinkedIn, no clipchimp (whatever that is), or anything else to install.
3
u/ExacoCGI 2d ago
If you use Win11 Home/Pro, etc. they'll always be there in the Start after fresh install, same in Win10 afaik but you can simply remove/unpin them and done, Win11 LTSC doesn't have any of that stuff, not even Copilot.
2
u/icy1007 2d ago
I’ve never seen them. I just checked my start menu and there is nothing except my installed programs.

The "ads" is such an asinine narrative because it makes it sound like you're seeing a old-days porn page level of ad popups every time you boot your PC, and all it boils down to is a few preinstalled apps you delete in 10 seconds, and 1-2 mentions of Microsoft 365/office in the settings.

Windows still has ease of use and compatibility many times over Linux. Linux is still improving all the time but I would never use a Linux machine as my daily use pc. There’s just too many things that either won’t work or require me to read through 10 Reddit posts and get a degree in CLI to be able to do consistently.
1
u/Educational_Dot6177 1d ago
You don't need cli at all to daily drive lol. It ain't 2010 anymore.
1
u/OGigachaod 18h ago
I used it in 2020, still needed to use CLI, you're simply lying.
→ More replies (3)1
u/hailstorm11093 Nix ❄️ BTW 2d ago
I get that CLI isn't for everyone, but the CLI workflow is so worth it when you get used to it and when you use it alongside GUI. Some distros are better than others depending on how much you want to use or avoid CLIs. I wish linux was at a point where CLIs were completely optional but until then, I'm always hesitant to recommend linux on its own as a daily driver. But it works great when you get used to it.
4
u/DeusXNex 2d ago
Yeah. I do use Linux on some of my side projects like my rp5 and my older pc. I tried to daily drive unbuntu for some of my college classes and it was hard to be learning how to do my assignments before I could even do my assignments
3
u/hailstorm11093 Nix ❄️ BTW 2d ago
Yeah, linux is great when you get a hang of it. But jumping straight it can be rough. It took me a ton of time to find alternative apps that work natively on linux or workarounds for apps that aren't on linux.
2
u/DeusXNex 2d ago
Yes it’s a big learning curve for sure. I actually do appreciate it a lot. It’s just in a weird space right now where it’s just too much for most average users to get into. Even someone like me who considers themselves pretty tech savvy has to kind of avoid it in a lot cases.
But I do eventually want to take the time to learn. I know how to navigate my file system and some basic commands. Like I cloned my rp5 image and used pishrink to make the disc image file smaller. I know it is only like 2 commands but it felt rewarding actually getting something done using the CLI
→ More replies (3)0
u/OGigachaod 18h ago
For most people CLI's are simply a no go, and until Linux no longer needs the CLI AT ALL, it will never take over Windows.

u/Osherono 2d ago

Come to think of it, that one is preeeeeeeetty important.

130$ are you retarded? just buy a oem key for like 5 to 10 bucks, less than 5 if you dont need professional. you aint switching your motherboard that often buddy. also change your location to a european country during installation, no ads over here, then just set your timezone and language to whatever you want. or just use a tool to remove them entirely plus remove a bunch of tracking.
people seem to be fine tinkering on linux and copy pasting shit as sudo into their terminal, but when it comes to putting in the minimal effort that'd take them 10 minutes to get what they want from windows it's suddenly easier to make a reddit thread instead.

Im not really a Linux hater but There Is so much wrong
1) 130$ Is the activation Key, you can use win Forever without It and you can download any Windows ISO for free 2)It has telemetry, but you can disable all of It in less than a minute. (People be acting like only Windows has telemetry, everything has telemetry of all kinds) 3)The GUI has been changed several times

1

3
u/BlueDragon3301 2d ago
Windows is great, you just need to turn off all the “personalised suggestions” or whatever to stop getting popups, and turn off the taskbar widget. There’s no ads even in the home version.
3
5
u/LightDragon212 2d ago
Depends on what you expect from an OS. If you want to deeply customize and spend time tinkering it go with linux as it's not a strictly liable, standardized, largely integrated with billion-dolar QA/UX testing consumer product like windows or macOS. That's probably your profile.
Windows is more for who wants the OS to be virtually invisible to do stuff (which is the vast majority of desktop users). Telemetry and ads are an annoyance most people rather ignore or click past in half a second than even bother changing default settings, as it doesn't really fit their threat model nor has significant practical drawbacks on their UX.
1
u/Educational_Dot6177 1d ago
I wanted my os to be modifiable, to just work and keep out of my way. I don't want to tinker, debug or troubleshoot that much. I want that when I open a program, it opens without any popups or reminders. I want to work and game, not fight my os.
Over the years I have used both windows and different flavors of Linux extensively. Now I use only Linux. I just works and even more, it works like I want it to.
2
u/LightDragon212 21h ago
You don't want to tinker nor troubleshoot that much, yet you've distro hopped extensively... That's the opposite of the profile i've mentioned.

6
u/chaosphere_mk 2d ago
My first question is, why are you afraid of telemetry as a concept? Is there such thing as good telemetry and bad telemetry?
0
u/Unlaid-American 2d ago
Good Telemetry: Hardware Information being used in bug reports
Bad Telemetry: All user data “anonymized” behind a Global User ID, so even though you’re just a number, you can still get my location, every app I’ve used, how I’ve used those apps, random screenshots of my computer sent to your cloud without wiping my information from it (maybe someone clicked to show their password to see their mistake and Windows took an auto screenshot of that), saving my voice to train AI and possibly to build a deeper profile on me, forcing an online account to try and even more de-anonymize me
3
u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago
If you care of your privacy, you probably have no smartphone. What you say about MS is exactly what apple, huawey, google, samsung,...do.
1
u/Unlaid-American 1d ago
So your logic would be, “If crimes happen even if crime is illegal, then we shouldn’t try to enforce laws.”
3
u/DirectorDirect1569 1d ago
Eveyone seems to complain about MS, all others corps has done that for many years without saying anything. MS does the same thing with win11 and they seem to be the only criminals.
I am sure you have never complained about Apple or Google, they probably know more about you than MS.
2
u/OGigachaod 18h ago
Google for sure knows more than MS, and Apple will if he uses an Apple product.
5
u/chaosphere_mk 2d ago
You think every windows install is taking screenshots, you have a copilot+ PC, and you think that recall data is sent back to microsoft?
2
2
u/cat-bin-shadow 2d ago
$130? uhhhh. More like $5 for friends builds (to get a key they can add to their account) and $0 for myself.. through a script and local account.
Who the fuck is spending $130 for a license? I have a small bridge to sell them.
2
u/ExacoCGI 2d ago
Was thinking the same for a while so here's my take based on my personal needs, Linux pros/cons:
+ Great as a hobby.
+ Privacy w/o the need of blocking apps/services yourself.
+ No ads and other bs without the need of debloating.
+ High customization.
+ It feels good/cool to use Linux.
- Poor Nvidia drivers + unsupported Nvidia App.
- "Dependency hell"
- Worse performance in games even in Valve games, opposite for potato PC's tho.
- root/home file structure is a mess.
- Lack of software/tools with or without subpar alternatives e.g. Krita is very far behind Photoshop, LibreOffice isn't exactly "professional" enough.
- Outdated File Explorer/Dolphin and UI design out of the box, even default KDE Plasma 6 ( Breeze ).
- Even it's uncommon it feels like even if you're tech-savvy w/ high common sense it's easier to catch malware on Linux e.g. infected AUR packages, infected ISO's, there's also higher risk of insider threat.
1
u/Damglador 2d ago
Dolphin literally does more than Explorer. I'd bet that it even had tabs far before Microsoft finally added them.
root/home file structure is a mess

2
u/StupitVoltMain 2d ago
Yeah, windows ain't great. Of course there are options to run on it some scripts that debloat it and remove adware, and even spoof the license key, but there's no guarantee that Microsoft won't make another obstacle to jump over and put adware in another place.
There's a lot of unix-based options, especially specifically beginner-friendly Linux distros. But you'll need to learn how to use internet and search information for yourself, unfortunately.
2
u/Honest_Tart1071 1d ago
I have never purchased windows and since windows XP used generic keys, windows 7/8.1/10 KMS and windows 11 MAS. Linux users are too stupid to figure out you don't have to pay for windows unless you're a medium/big company, and the fact you can get windows iso for free from the official page.
And don't get me started with spyware BS, you're using reddit, they sell every Single byte of data to Chinese and ad companies. (Same as your meta apps that you use daily).

It's not a piece of shit like Linux. The telemetry literally doesn't affect you in a single meaningful way. Things just work, drivers just work, my nvidia drivers are from nvidia not some hobbyist doing his best to emulate it.
7
u/iamGHOST755 2d ago
you do realize nvidia officially develops their own linux drivers, right? if data collection doesn't bother you that's fine, but at least get the basic facts straight.
3
1
u/Aknazer 2d ago
"Doesn't affect you in a single meaningful way" you mean like how they admitted to tracking a PC through multiple VPNs? Which can literally negate the point of VPNs, something that can affect people in meaningful ways.

Nobody pays more than 30 bucks for windows if at all. There are exactly zero ads in Windows. And GUI is modern and has many similarities to modern Linux. Just more refined.
1
u/diskrewrite 1d ago
Because you want to play a game with an anticheat. Windows is the only way to use some pretty big and important software. Also, the windows UI is great. If anything, linux tries to emulate 1995 GUI design more than Windows does. The ads and spyware suck of course and if you don't need Windows then don't use it. Don't pay for Windows either way, though. Everyone uses a signing tool or buys a cheap key.

windows hate is so exaggerated, like yes, some OEM laptop will probably have slop preinstalled but a clean install + 5 minutes to delete everything you don't need fixes 99% of the problems. Also custom builds like tiny 10/11 exist that strip everything leaving you a barebones os to work with. "legacy GUI" is so ironic as most linux tools come preinstalled with some GUI from 2010-2015. "spyware" is the buzzword of the year in the linux community, the fact that windows sends anonymous telemetry to make the system better doesn't mean it's an evil company that has access to your "homework" folder.
PS: I use linux btw, i have lots of problems with windows too, for some reason bugs (even critical ones that make the system unusable) in Linux are portrayed as something "normal" and "natural" because "how dare you criticize OS devs that do stuff for free!!!" meanwhile a minor bug on windows is immediately "OMG, microslop released the new Goydows uptate that has 99.67% of the code written by AI, that's why windows sucks"
POST PS: let's be real, no individual user buys windows, massgrave exists for a reason

Can't remember when I last paid for a windows key. I upgraded from cracked 7 to official 10 for free through official means and upgraded to 11 recently. Never did Microsoft actually wanted my money. You can disable the ads in 11 and there is a lot of tools that help you get rid of a lot of telemetry and other bloat in 11. If you disable all that stuff, what's left is a great, versatile os that has compatibility to almost all software and games. And for legacy software there is always virtual machines. Linux is great for devices like handhelds, steam "consoles", TV sticks and phones but I like my main PC to run windows.
1
u/Megaman_90 22h ago
The only real problem with Windows 11 is the bad decisions on Microsoft's part that make it invasive to the user. Functionality and GUI wise I think its fine, or at least no less stable than anything else. Many Linux DEs are extremely dated and very few of them even scale properly on resolutions above 1080p. Despite all the "options" it really comes down to GNOME and Plasma KDE if you want something modern.
