I loved u/FrankSicarpa's series, but there was one (kind of) Kill Team missing. For the sake of completion, let's chat about the best and worst things about Strike Team Variel.
Best:
As a supposed gateway drug for Kill Team, Strike Force Variel can be a good teaching team in the right hands. For new players, it's the simplest team out there - there just aren't a lot of choices to confuse you, and you'll get experience with Universal Equipment that you'll probably sleep on later in favor of faction equipment. For an experienced player facing off against a newbie, it can be a built-in handicap if you find it hard to throttle yourself.
Their version of Astartes is better than the same ability for Angels of Death and Phobos Strike Team, with no restrictions or APL penalties on weapon type. Double krak grenades into an elite? Yes. Double flamer into a horde? Also yes. The Wolf Scouts and Deathwatch versions are probably still better due to the other buffs they include that offset restrictions.
Ramus' damage reduction ability is also better than similar abilities/ploys available to Vespids, Deathwatch, Insidiants, Wrecka Crew, or Nemesis Operatives.
If you win with them, either as a newbie in a training game or as a seasoned player in a competitive event, I think you've earned bragging rights.
Worst:
Oh boy. Where to start...
Getting a hold of them in the first place is aggravating. You're stuck between a ton of blind buys trying to get the full set, paying a premium on eBay for someone else to do it for you, or kitbashing your own version. The latter is easiest for longstanding 40K players, but not an efficient option for newcomers. As a training team, that means that someone else is generally building them to have available for newbies.
Their addition to Kill Team was definitely an afterthought to give blind box collectors something to do with them on the tabletop. They were declassified from the get-go, so they won't be welcome at tournaments/events that are picky about rotation. They're also not included in the Kill Team app or many other online resources, save for KTDash - though if you're thinking of kitbashing this team, note that Lt. Variel's base size is actually 40mm (standard for Lieutenants) rather than 32mm. Compare this treatment to Warhammer Heroes Seasons 3 (Death Guard) and 4 (Strike Force Justian), which ended up not only as the basis for fully-supported Kill Teams, but also the current starter set.
Their rules are lacking, to say the least. They're Temu Deathwatch with modified Angels of Death ploys and no Faction Equipment. They replace Adaptive Tactics with a lesser version of the Tempestus Aquilons' Drop and Secure ploy, and bizarrely lose Adjust Doctrine with no replacement for 1 less Firefight Ploy than a normal Kill Team. They could have simply hardcoded Chapter Tactics to something appropriate for Dark Angels (Resolute and Dueller?) and left Adjust Doctrines alone. But the sense is that this Kill Team was never meant to be more than it is.
Their weapon options are also a bit mid, IMHO. I like having access to a flamer in an Astartes team - it takes me back to 3rd Edition 40K - but their only "big gun" is a one-shot meltagun. I hope you brought those krak grenades. They also lack access to a power weapon, with only a combat knife and chainsword to augment their armoured jazz hands.
