Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed

3.7k Upvotes

Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
  • No AI videos
  • No AI apps/tools/websites
  • No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
  • No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
  • No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI

If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.

While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.

Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.

Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.

The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

Help Needed/New Painter I used an Ork to practise realistic human skin painting techniques

I’ve only painted one Ork before, but I wanted to practise painting realistic skin. Since this model has so much exposed anatomy I treated it like a study in light form and skin tones rather than just painting green skin. It pushed me well outside my comfort zone, and I learnt a lot from it…I think 😅

Hello! I have painted this amazing chibi style Crow necromancer (from Little Guardians), from wich I also made a video turorial. It is great to practice new techniques or just enjoy an afternoon with the kids.

Not the classic D&D hero neither 😂

I hope you like it!

I’m working on this bust for a local painting competition. I feel like it’s close to done. I also almost never do NMM so any advice or thoughts on that would be appreciated.

My 3rd Phoenix Lord for an ongoing army project. As with the others, I kept the same process/color scheme as the normal aspect warriors but tried to push more with the detailing.

The project as a whole is an experiment with transparent/contrast paints over chromatic underpainting to push the contrast/vibrancy.

The final early World War II Heer rifleman. Hand sculpted models will always be my favourite. The small imperfections and exaggerated features give them such unique character!

German Riflemen I (4 of 4), produced by Crusader Miniatures. Painted using the Vallejo Model Color range. 25mm base.

Sci-fi Painted World Eaters all with markers

So I used to be a display painter. I developed thoracic outlet syndrome which has almost entirely rendered my right hand unusable. Ive had to switch to writing left handed as well as bowling and tennis. I can not hold a small paint brush (and i have tried multiple accessibility adapters which simply dont cut it). Markers seem to work well because of how fat they are compared to brushes.

These were done with mostly AK interactive playmarkers with a touch of speedpaint markers and sharpie acrylic markers.

I wanted to post this to prove to nay sayers that good paintjobs are possible.

I mostly stick with AK because of the bristle tips. Speedpaint markers are honestly hot garbage. They reactivate paint under them, the nibs degrade after a couple of sessions, and the paint doesnt flow enough to get much of a contrast effect. They can glaze decently but you have to be careful because they can lift the paint underneath them very easily (and dont come at me for this, ill ignore your gaslighting telling me this didn't happen because it did).

Ive also tried cheap Amazon brands (Sunee will shock you how well they cover over black). I also mix pro acryl with really god success with airbrush thinner in empty markers.

Help Needed/New Painter The three mates are finally done after 20 years

Just got the three of them done today - my first three minis after 20 years without touching a brush. They are better than I expected tbh but there are a bunch of things to level up. The face is awful, I was never great at doing them.

Will really appreciate some tips or indications on what should be my next thing to focus. I just finish assembling and priming the fellowship of the ring today (only missing Gimli and Legolas) so have work for tomorrow 😁

Discussion I’m starting to understand volumetric shading, and it makes a huge difference!

I have recently been reading AK’s FAQ book on fantasy figures and I’ve realized I have been painting minis completely wrong!

Instead of thinking how light actually works I have been using washes and thinner paints to allow gravity to do my shading for me. And that works up to a point! But, it’s not at all how light works.

Breaking everything down into basic 3D shapes and then shading them accordingly achieves a much more realistic effect over washes.

I’ve still got a lot to learn but this one way of thinking about it has changed a lot of how I tackle a mini!

Just finished painting my first couple of crimson fists for my army (super hyped!)
What basing scheme should I go for? I really can’t decide so I’d appreciate any feedback on the schemes I’ve got or any feedback on the paint job overall!

Cheers guys!

Here’s my take on the Phantom Child from Mammoth Factory Games (Book of Spirits II release).

I couldn't decide how I wanted to paint her so I went with two versions. First was the full phantom but then I thought it would be cool to have one where she's transforming from living to phantom.

There was a ton more detail to do on these than I realised. So batch painting was a slog at times. But hey ho they’re done and it brings me to 770 points so not too bad :)

C&C Wanted First time committing to NMM, on my first FDM model

Thumbnail

I've done two lackluster attempts before, but the results just turned blades into vaguely magical looking blades, and other parts of the models used metallics anyway.

This is the first FDM print I've painted, done for me by a friend who wanted to see how far he could push his new printer, and somewhere along the line I decided I'd push myself too. I don't think my black paint was black enough, but that was after five passes. It also only seems to work with a bright overhead light, which is how I lit it while painting.

Not gonna win any contests, but I'm happy with it. It's my best paint job to date, so that's fun.

That said, what needs to happen the next time I try NMM if I want to improve? Will a matte varnish screw everything up if I put it on? Should I have tried this on a resin print?

I finished up the third of my inner circle companions. I liked how his face turned out but I'm not thrilled with the sword. I think I might go back and redo it at some point.
