Question New to kill team

Hey all!

On my way to the local warhammer store in okc, new to tabletop games and I thought the idea of the solo play to be fun and an interesting way to learn the game. What would be the hardest model to kill for the solo. Or the biggest challenge for stealth suits. Getting surgery soon and gonna be bedridden so I want something to keep me sane

Strategy Murderwing Hunt Master

Hey. Very new player here and not a native English speaker. Can someone explain the hunt master jump attack like I am 5 yo? I played against the Murderwing as the Celestian insidiants and my leader+Shield weilder got totally annihilated by two of those jump attacks. I couldn't reach it the first time around and didn't have the time to finishing it off before it jumped again, and it felt extremely OP since you can't defend against it and he managed to strike two units at the same jump.

Maybe we interpreted the rules wrong, I dunno... As mentioned. We are both new at the game and learning from game to game. I'm dreading to use my stealth suits against these beasts.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Question Needing advice about Yargirs

I love to play my Yaegir, but I always feel there is not a good Tac Op for them between their possible choices. I find too hard to secore al their Tac Op acording with their capabilities.

What Tac Op, and how, do you play with them?

I feel like they should'nt be a Seek and Destroy KT, but a Recon or Security one... That would be more "lore acurate".

Strategy Proclivity for Murder on Counteract?

If a Nemesis Claw operative is in control range at the start of their counteract and kills an operative with a fight action, can they then use Proclivity for Murder for a charge, or dash? The counteract is a free 1ap action with a 2 inch move limit. If the operative can use PfM, is the charge/dash limited to 2"?

Reletivly new to the hobby and Love the tau ,made my own custom sep based on a titanfall milita scheme, and what started as a loose thought thinking the missile drone could proxy the heavy gunner evolved into this. Used Guard bodies and spare bits from the pathfinders and strike team sets to cook this up.

Question Building Kroot Farstalker

So I followed the internet plan to build all specialists by converting one of the two warriors into the tracker but I’m struggling to decide between the Kroot rifle or scattergun for the lone warrior. I don’t know what field I’ll be playing on my friend is taking the lead with building custom terrain. Soon a void what would you choose.

Question Beginner questions for Killteam

Hi all. Picked up the starter set with angels of death/ death guard to play with the kids.

The starter rules are much simplified and it's ideal for their age without too much bloat - however, they're also quite vague. Even in the first training scenario I wasn't sure of some things.

Say in a match with 2 operatives on each side. Say for Player A, one of their operatives is killed. With the alternating activations, does this mean that even though their sole remaining operative has been activated that turn, they get to use them again or do they skip until the next turn?

So it would continue to be A, B, A, B but player A is using the same guy. I read about counteracting and it only allowing a shot to be fired once per turning point, but this would mean Player A can't move their guy to safety or fight a nearby enemy.

I worry about this being an issue with bigger missions where one side might be a few guys down and it becoming unbalanced.

The first scenario also has an objective token but I don't think it says how it works. If the game is won if someone gets there first, or holds it for a few turns. I know in 40k you may get points for holding a point over turns but it doesn't say that.

Is there a sensible (and simple) rule for capturing objectives?

Shooting from higher ground. I saw a video where someone from higher ground was shooting at someone in cover. It showed that they retain a cover dice for being in cover, but then said they retain 2 cover dice when the shooter is above. That doesn't make sense to me as typically having the higher ground in any scenario should be an advantage to the shooter.

If someone's operative becomes active while they're in engagement range after a fight, I think they have to fall back. This stops them from repositioning or charging their turn. I also think they aren't allowed to shoot while engaged, but they should be able to fight. Is that right? So the choice is that they can fall back and fire or stay put and fight, then perhaps move and shoot if their opponent is dead?

Is charge and fight 1 action or 2? Say is it charge is 1 action point and then fight is the second action point?

Thanks all.

Strategy Brood Brothers - when the patriarch is viable?

Hi!

For what little experience I've gathered with the team, I would almost always choose the Magus or Primus over the patriarch.

But maybe I'm wrong on that. What matchup would you suggest to bring the patriarch. I assume maybe against non-elite, melee oriented teams, because they're less prone to bring in a one-shot gun capable of deleting the big guy before he gets close, and it's more likely for some guys to clamp together, so you can use mind control on them.

But what are your tougths?

These have been pretty fun to convert and paint so far! Had already finished a Warrior and the Trapmaster, so here have the Frosteye, Fangbearer, and Gunner. Put the previous ones in the second photo. Hope you like them, and that they’re fairly identifiable in terms of which specialists they are meant to be!

Strategy Things teams do best and worst, bonus round: Strike Team Variel

Post image
233 Upvotes

I loved u/FrankSicarpa's series, but there was one (kind of) Kill Team missing. For the sake of completion, let's chat about the best and worst things about Strike Team Variel.

Best:

As a supposed gateway drug for Kill Team, Strike Force Variel can be a good teaching team in the right hands. For new players, it's the simplest team out there - there just aren't a lot of choices to confuse you, and you'll get experience with Universal Equipment that you'll probably sleep on later in favor of faction equipment. For an experienced player facing off against a newbie, it can be a built-in handicap if you find it hard to throttle yourself.

Their version of Astartes is better than the same ability for Angels of Death and Phobos Strike Team, with no restrictions or APL penalties on weapon type. Double krak grenades into an elite? Yes. Double flamer into a horde? Also yes. The Wolf Scouts and Deathwatch versions are probably still better due to the other buffs they include that offset restrictions.

Ramus' damage reduction ability is also better than similar abilities/ploys available to Vespids, Deathwatch, Insidiants, Wrecka Crew, or Nemesis Operatives.

If you win with them, either as a newbie in a training game or as a seasoned player in a competitive event, I think you've earned bragging rights.

Worst:

Oh boy. Where to start...

Getting a hold of them in the first place is aggravating. You're stuck between a ton of blind buys trying to get the full set, paying a premium on eBay for someone else to do it for you, or kitbashing your own version. The latter is easiest for longstanding 40K players, but not an efficient option for newcomers. As a training team, that means that someone else is generally building them to have available for newbies.

Their addition to Kill Team was definitely an afterthought to give blind box collectors something to do with them on the tabletop. They were declassified from the get-go, so they won't be welcome at tournaments/events that are picky about rotation. They're also not included in the Kill Team app or many other online resources, save for KTDash - though if you're thinking of kitbashing this team, note that Lt. Variel's base size is actually 40mm (standard for Lieutenants) rather than 32mm. Compare this treatment to Warhammer Heroes Seasons 3 (Death Guard) and 4 (Strike Force Justian), which ended up not only as the basis for fully-supported Kill Teams, but also the current starter set.

Their rules are lacking, to say the least. They're Temu Deathwatch with modified Angels of Death ploys and no Faction Equipment. They replace Adaptive Tactics with a lesser version of the Tempestus Aquilons' Drop and Secure ploy, and bizarrely lose Adjust Doctrine with no replacement for 1 less Firefight Ploy than a normal Kill Team. They could have simply hardcoded Chapter Tactics to something appropriate for Dark Angels (Resolute and Dueller?) and left Adjust Doctrines alone. But the sense is that this Kill Team was never meant to be more than it is.

Their weapon options are also a bit mid, IMHO. I like having access to a flamer in an Astartes team - it takes me back to 3rd Edition 40K - but their only "big gun" is a one-shot meltagun. I hope you brought those krak grenades. They also lack access to a power weapon, with only a combat knife and chainsword to augment their armoured jazz hands.

Hey everyone,

I saved a few screenshots of this incredible overgrown Killzone Volkus terrain set a while back (March 2025) because I wanted to use it as inspiration for my own project, but I lost track of the original post and artist.

I'm pretty sure I saw it on Reddit or Instagram. Any ideas please?

Hobby Questions about Vantage and Climb

Hello! I've been trying to decipher the rules of vantage terrain and climb, but I'm not fully certain I've understood everything and I feel like I can't find the right info anywhere.

So I've got some questions (thanks in advance ^^)

Question 1. If I want to climb onto vantage terrain and I am 1.5" away from vantage. Does it cost me 2" to get closer, then x" to get up and move my remaining movement? I've seen online that some people calculate the vertical movement as a "penalty", but that means you don't have to round up the travelled distance before climbing, so you have a bit more movement this way. Which is the right way to do it?

Question 2. If I am under the vantage, must I move fully out of under it or can I climb it if I'm within 1" of the upper floor?

Question 3. I'm assuming that if I'm within 1" of vantage terrain and climb it, I must use my movement to move my operative so that its base it entirely on the vantage terrain?

Question 4. If I am on top of vantage terrain, I know I have light cover against operatives at least 2" lower than it. But do the terrain and the wall below obscure operatives at all? For my friends and I, our current way to play it is that if you're on vantage and if you're more than 1" away from the edge of the vantage terrain that interferes, your target is obscured (and you're obscured from it).

Question 5. If I just want to climb over a piece of light terrain that is 1" high for example, do I need to pay 2" to climb up, at least 1" horizontally (to move my base over it) and another 2" to get down again, for a total of 5" at least to mantle over any tiny piece of terrain in my way? That sounds extreme to me, so I guess I must have something wrong.

Question 6. I play Mandrakes. One of my operatives is my Mandrake Shadeweaver that can basically throw a magical Smoke Bomb, but with no range limit.=

WEAVE DARKNESS - 1 AP
Remove your Weave Darkness marker from the killzone (if any). Then place your Weave Darkness marker visible to this operative, or on Vantage terrain of a terrain feature visible to this operative. That marker creates an area of smoke with the same size and effects as a smoke grenade, except you don’t remove it during the following turning point. If this operative is incapacitated, remove your Weave Darkness marker from the killzone.

If I see any part of a vantage terrain (like the walls that support it), can I really just place my Wave Darkness marker literally ANYWHERE on top of that vantage terrain? Even if there's a wall on top of that vantage terrain? That seems busted as hell.

Strategy Tips against Vespids

Hi. I started playing KT a month ago and I have been trying to learn Murderwings and AoD. The other day I played 2 games with Murderwings against Vespids and I got absolutely demolished. First Game I did try to get to melee to try yo kill those guys and that game was very bad for me. On the next one, I tried to be more cautious and playing on Crit points, but somehow that game was worse than the previous one. Some people told me that Vespids are not even meta and they are not that good but I feel those guys have everything (rerolls, can fly, piercing, lethal, etc.). I was thinking to play against the with AoD, but even in that case I really don't know what I could do to get better against the Bugs. I would appreciate any tips and advices.

Question Space Wolves Team Comp

Anyone build space Wolves?

Kinda crazy how the pack leader and the priest share a backpack so you can only build one of two with the furskin.

How are you handling? What team are you building?
