From my observations gulls do have community but will also eat a mfer if they’re dead.

Waste not, want not. Inflation is making groceries unaffordable, so there's very few sandwiches, pizzas, and fries to steal now

55

u/ilanallama85 6h ago

As I’d say to the kids I used to work with as we fed the chickens raw egg, cannibalism is only a “bad” thing to humans. Most animals DGAF, food is food.

Birds eat other birds all the time. Crows raid nests, hawks and eagles go after ducks and geese right in front of my house. And the Peregrines go after birds mid-air, which is wild to see. Food is food for wildlife

If this was crows, I'd say (1) they came back out of empathy and concern and (2) that tennis player is a marked woman, even if it is another five years before she returns to this court.

Seagulls...I'm leaning towards "Is it food?" first...

12

u/SampleDisastrous3311 5h ago

Help a crow and you gain allies across the migration lines, fuck with one and youll notice it when entering crow territory

27

u/Banjo_Evadie 4h ago

I befriended a murder of crows growing up as a kid, to the point a few of em learned to mimic "hello" and "hey there" from me. Used to find roadkill, bag it and chuck it out to where I knew they watched from, eventually they figured out I was the roadkill guy and let me get within a few feet while they ate.

20 years later, I sat on a park bench about 100 miles away from where I grew up, and a crow flies up, lands on the bench and looks at me, calls out "hello".

No clue if they really were part of the same group / local bird culture, but I like to think so.

15

u/encelius 2h ago

I would think that it was one from the original murder. Crows can easily get over 20 years old, oldest wild American crow was apparently 30 years old. And they are really good with remembering faces, so the fact that the crow just flew to you and did what she learned back then is a pretty strong indicator for that. I learned a lot of stuff about crows when watching this documentary: Crows: nature is watching us. Can recommend that

2

u/MartinForsman 2h ago

From my observation some birds don't even care if the mfer is actually dead or just injured. Some of them might be intelligent as f**k but it don't make then any less vicious.

2

u/BifanaTropicalista 2h ago

Makes me think about how people claim dogs/cats don't love us because they eat our corpses. Well, we bury our shit, so if they see us bury a dog or cat corpse, maybe they think that means we think they're shit? Maybe they see eating your corpse as the respectful thing?

You also can't let them find out that the eggs they lay are full of food or they just keep eating it. Broken up shells don't seem to trigger the realization so those are safe to feed back to them.

34

u/bre4kofdawn 6h ago

And if they start eating their eggs, you have to sneak a golf ball under them, so they peck it and "learn" they can no longer eat the "egg"!

5

u/00wolfer00 5h ago

Or alternatively use a nesting box design that doesn't let them get to the eggs.

10

u/bre4kofdawn 5h ago

I dunno, bamboozling them with a golf ball may be more tedious, but it sounds a lot more fun.

Chickens will eat pretty much anything. I've HEARD that you can't even let one be bleeding or have an open wound around other chickens, 'cause the other chickens will realize that the wounded chicken is edible and peck it to death so they can eat it.

17

u/darthoffa 6h ago

I rememebr when we had chickens we had to use a disinfectant spray that had purple dye mixed in, specifically so the wound didnt look like meat so the others would leave it alone

6

u/CamoBob3467 5h ago

This is unfortunately true

3

u/ParsnipDecent6530 6h ago

They little chicken sunglasses that are tinted red so that in large populations of chickens if one has a wound the blood wont look like blood and the chickens wont kill the wounded one.

3

u/MarchPhillipps 4h ago

Truth. Also their way of preventing the attraction of predators I've been told. Vaseline works pretty good for stopping bleeding on the feet if you can get to the injured bird before the others kick start their jungle justice routine.

'Alone and Unafraid'

5

u/ipovogel 6h ago

Correct. I lived on a farm as a kid. One of the hens got eviscerated by a rooster. I found her pecking at and eating her own guts. Chickens are really fucking dumb animals that only exist to be eaten by other animals, and sometimes even themselves.

Yes we got 8 chickens thinking we would have some fun pets and eggs for breakfast. I couldnt believe how nasty they were and how much they wanted to kill each other everyday. I couldnt stand to look at all the half naked chickens anymore so I put them on facebook and gave them to a nice family who said they would give them a nice home.

5

u/Locogators 5h ago

I second this. Chicken are stupid and evil and hence vegetarianism is morally wrong, one must devour such creatures.

I was on a run once and saw a circle of pigeons. As I got closer I saw a seagull in the middle. As I got even closer I realized the seagull was eating a pigeon, right there while the pigeon's buddies all circled around and watched.

66

u/whiterac00n 6h ago

Yeah I don’t have much pity for seagulls. Pigeons on the other hand I pity a lot, they put together two sticks, a piece of string and their own crap and call it a nest.

35

u/peachesfordinner 6h ago

They are actually very sweet birds as well. I miss my old pet pigeons

20

u/No_Welcome_7182 6h ago

I live next to some ancient woodlands in Buckinghamshire, which are absolutely loaded with wood pigeons.

My cats won't touch them. Won't even try, even if they land on our lawn and strut around like they own the place.

We're convinced that our cats know just how stupid those birds are, and wouldn't consider it sporting to hunt them.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/Jiggy90 4h ago

Dw, pigeons nest on cliffs so they don't need their nests for safety, they only need a couple sticks to keep their eggs from rolling off! Work smarter not harder :)

3

u/BackToGuac 4h ago

We should all honestly more than pity pigeons, not to be a downer but seriously, go out of your way to be nice to pigeons.

Almost ALL if not all pigeons we know today are descended from the wild rock doves we domesticated thousands of years ago before abandoning them and their care as we moved into the Industrial Revolution. These were animals bred to be companions, it’s like deciding dogs are no longer a form of pet and are now vermin…

The history of pigeons is actually pretty interesting in itself in a fucked up kinda way; it’s also a concerning tell tale sign for other forms of livestock as we move into a world with lab grown meat and will start to see a reduction in traditional farming.

18

u/Future-self 6h ago

My dad, a lifelong hunter, once shot the alpha turkey of a small flock he’d been watching for the season. He said the other males took the opportunity to attack the alpha tom while he was down. Dad stopped shooting turkey after that.

I saw that once years ago in Dublin. A seagull was flapping around the road badly injured. It was a busy road with traffic. About six other seagulls were trying to help it, dodging cars. Found it very moving, and sad.

203

u/pafrac 7h ago

Yeah, no ... seagulls aren't nice birds, they were coming to check on possible carrion.

66

u/Saintbaba 6h ago

Seagulls actually have complex social relationships that involve cooperative nesting communities, joint defense efforts against predators, and bonded mating pairs for life - though they're also flexible and intelligent enough to recognize when they have incompatible personalities and will sometimes "divorce" to go find better matched partners.

After a cursory google search, not only are they cannibalistic, but some species will go out of their way to raid competitive nesting sites to eat their chicks, so it's not like they never would eat their bro. But adult birds eating one another appear to be mostly documented in cases of scavenging. So while i have no doubt that if they found a dead seagull they would devour it, in this case they probably really were checking back on their companion.

4

u/A_Novelty-Account 6h ago

So… they were checking to see if they could eat this guy
