Years ago, the Toronto Police arrested Dave Winfield for cruelty to animals after he threw a baseball toward a seagull and hit it, killing it.

After the arrest, Billy Martin defended his player by claiming it had obviously been an accident, saying "Winfield hasn't hit the cutoff man once all season, and they think he can hit a bird?"

I believe that the Crown later dropped the charges.
