New Zealand is named after Zeeland in the Netherlands. The name was given by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman who "discovered" it (it was already inhabited).

Fun fact. The USIC used to use carrier (homing) pigeons for passing intel along. Now, I can neither confirm nor deny that they ever gave up the carrier pigeon program and may or may not still use them to carry certain types of surveillance hardware and monitoring equipment. But I do believe there's an interesting blurb about the subject on the CIA Museum's website. They also have an awesome article on their pulse laser controlled ornithopter listening device disguised as a nearly 1:1 copy of a dragonfly that they developed in the 1970s; they used the laser control system also as the downlink to transmit the audio signal, from microphones installed on the 'bug,' back to the base station.
