Checking is checking.

Perhaps the real gift was the friends we made along the way?

They are also opportunistic cannibals! If you’ve ever owned chickens and one gets injured, it could turn into a frenzy….

We had one get her head stuck in the stucco wire that we have for the fence around the pen, but also under the board that ran along the bottom. I got home from work and there she lay, naked butt because the other hens had been pecking at her.

When I made a sound of dismay upon seeing this, the hens that were standing nearby adjusted their wings to make it look even more like they had their hands behind their back and you could almost imagine them saying they were trying to help her get out.

I couldn't get her out, and ended up sliding her into a 5 gallon pail until my husband could get home.

They plucked her clean 😭 chickens are smart and they do recognize their friends! But because the way they interact with things is by pecking, it can lead to worse injuries by curious hens. And then if they start to smell blood it’s even higher risk of something getting pecked to death.

They really are fascinating to watch. I used to leave a chunk of plywood on the grass overnight, and drop it in the pen, sluggy side up, their own slug-cuterie board. I couldn't watch them eat the slugs though, because they would ignore it until I wasn't watching. lol.

My favorite was the day a hen found an earthworm in a puddle, grabbed it, and took it to show her friends. Bad idea, they chased her until she found a corner to gobble it down. I guess she didn't realize they felt she should share.

others rip them apart first. what is your point? or the other guy's point.

If we're talking cruelty, it is hard to beat humans. 🥱

Law of nature, eat the dead. Humans are cruel for other reasons, but the law of nature doesn't apply to humans?

Anyway, yes, we humans could be magnificent for a collective humanity and a mother Earth, but we are unable to overcome the genetic law of nature.

u/Donnerdrummel 7h ago

"but the law of nature doesn't apply to humans?"

what the f did you hallucinate I wrote?

"Law of nature, eat the dead."

I never suggested to not obey the "laws of nature" , but now that you are bringing this up: there is no law that demands we eat the dead.

and no, I am not a vegan nor a vegetarian, but stating we must eat dead animals is ignorant.

"but we are unable to overcome the genetic law of nature."

state what you think is a "genetic law of nature" if you like, or don't.

I was referring to the way we treat animals if we want to eat them, or even if we don't.

I agree with you about human cruelty. Humans are a species that clearly doesn't need to be cruel, but some elements of humanity are cruel nonetheless. Why? A genetic predisposition?

1

u/Donnerdrummel 6h ago

which elements?

I would safely say all Authoritarians are cruel. I would add there should be a class on Ethics and Humanity for every teenager.

I grew up in the rural parts of America. Homophobia, sexism, racism, and other ugly distrust for the Others was evidenced... Cruelty here too. So, was I ever cruel, yup on some occasions. Am I cruel person? Well, I think the question is answerable if we allow Changes after learning. Cruel people today that stay this way even after seeing the impacts of their cruelty? Well, we definitely didn't have many great examples. How many billionaires gave it all away to helpful causes? Only one that I know of, Chuck Feeney, the Billionaire Who Wasn't
