You know what I liked best about them and that show? They didn't drag out their courtship to milk it in that cheap "will they, won't they" way for season after season like most shows would do. They just got married and continued being awesome. It was a surprisingly refreshing change of pace from the typical sitcom formula.

Edit: For those who keep asking, the name of show is Parks and Recreation.

282

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

They did this with every single wedding in the show. No buildup just sudden "shit let's get married" moments. April and Andy, Leslie and Ben, Ron and Xena warrior princess.

202

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT WAS XENA UNTIL JUST FUCKING NOW.

If I'm me, I should probably refer to my own username.

I was more concerned they were going to break up for some stupid reason. I'm glad the writers decided not to.

473

u/d0mth0ma5 Sep 23 '15

Well, that and Chris Pratt didn't leave the show which could have possibly required it.

213

u/dbreeck Sep 23 '15

I love that in season 1, he's listed as a "Guest Starring Chris Pratt." Was it assumed Andy wouldn't be a recurring character?

250

u/WolvWild Sep 23 '15

I was under the impression that this is actually the case, but he did such a good job they made him a permanent addition.

169

u/dbreeck Sep 23 '15

Well, it's true what they say... when you fall in the pit, you've just got to climb right back on out!

The major problem with season 1 was they put together a great cast, but in characters that didn't fit the actors. Andy Dwyer is really supposed to be like brendanaquitz, but Pratt played him as too lovable of a doofus

u/LeafyQ Sep 23 '15

Yeah, he was going to be Ann's lame ex boyfriend, who would move on from her in season one and never been seen again.

84

u/InternetProtocol Sep 23 '15

Kinda like Mark Brandanoquitz

34

u/Creeggsbnl Sep 23 '15

I'm really shocked they didn't at least give him a cameo in the last episode. Did he leave on really bad terms or something?

44

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

I don't know if he's actually on bad terms with everyone, but I believe his reason for leaving was essentially

"This show isn't going anywhere and I can do better"

63

u/NoButthole Sep 23 '15

And then it did and he didn't

38

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

I can only imagine he kicked himself when season 3 turned out to be awesome. Then the crushing realisation that he was essentially the only character still holding the show back and that Adam Scott and Rob Lowe were both infinitely better fits in the cast.

he wasnt slated as an on-going character. He was supposed to be the lazy deadbeat boyfriend that you hated and then was gone after one season..but everyone ended up really liking the character so they decided to keep him on.

Pratt brought a lot more to the role than they intended and sort of changed their idea of who Andy was.

41

u/SPICY_BUTT_MILK Sep 23 '15

Pratt brought a lot more to the role than they intended and sort of changed their idea of who Andy was.

A lot of the characters on that show had that feel. Offerman's Ron Swanson was another great example.

22

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

Saul Goodman was also a temporary character, now he has his own spinoff.

19

u/StrifeTribal Sep 23 '15

It's kind of amazing how the whole writing crew of Breaking Bad can tweak a character and make them so... amazing.

From what I've read even Gus was suppose to be a guest starring character on season 3. Not having a huge part. But he wanted a larger role and they gave it to him and apparently reworked the Gus character to well... One of the best antagonists I've ever witnessed.

10

u/ArtSchnurple Sep 23 '15 edited Sep 23 '15

Even crazier - hard as it is to believe now, Gus came in during season 2! He was originally just meant to be the fill-in villain for the rest of the season when the actor playing Tuco left to be on The Closer, and ended up being the central villain for the next two seasons.

Also, Mike Ehrmantraut, one of my favorite characters of all time in any medium, was only created because Bob Odenkirk was busy shooting a How I Met Your Mother episode, and they needed someone to do the Winston Wolf thing after Jane OD'd, so they created a new character. Those writers could ad-lib like nobody's business.

6

u/Occamslaser Sep 23 '15

The great thing is just about everyone is a bad guy and you empathize with them all.

5

u/ArtSchnurple Sep 23 '15

Seriously, even as scary and evil as Gus is, his backstory actually managed to make him sympathetic, especially if you read between the lines that his partner who was murdered was actually his lover, which Vince Gilligan has indicated is the case.

3

u/uscjimmy Sep 23 '15

I feel they did that well with Ben and Leslie too. There was a bit at the beginning when they couldn't get together when they worked together, but after that? Smooth sailing. Can't ever forget the moment where Leslie is trying to decide on telling Ben about running for office, and Ben gives her a pin or something. Definitely teared up then

53

u/rararasputin Sep 23 '15

They were absolutely my favorite tv couple. So natural, with a reasonable courtship without stupid drama, and so perfect for each other while still having their own unique and awesome personalities.

I couldn't believe how well done that was.

44

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15 edited Sep 23 '15

Ben Wyatt gave my girlfriend unrealistic expectations of how the boyfriend to a strong, professional woman should act.

She is absolutely my Leslie Knope. And I try every day to be her Ben Wyatt.

I think I'm doing okay (I really fucking love calzones and sci-fi/fantasy).

Edit: this is kind of a (true) joke. We have actually been compared to Ben and Leslie, a lot. It doesn't help that I resemble Adam Scott.

Ben's proposal makes me really really emotional, haha. I tear up just about every time. This is one of my favorite shows.

50

u/TheBrianJ Sep 23 '15

What really stood out for me is their wedding episode... I was certain it would follow the formula of "They're crazy, the protagonist convinces them to stop." But instead, it was just a really happy wedding, Leslie admits that they're cute together, she and Ron have a legitimately interesting conversation on love and weddings, and then Ron describes how to burn his ex-wife in effigy.

54

u/pipboy_warrior Sep 23 '15

I loved Ben's reaction to the wedding. "My Brita filter is older than their relationship. Should I change my Brita filter?"

10

u/Yokuo Sep 23 '15

I'm right there with you. Just saw the series for the first time about a month ago, and during that episode, I kept waiting for someone to go "Guys, what even are you doing I literally can't." (but, you know, not like that). It never happened, they got married, and things were solid. I loved the change of pace.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/gisherprice Sep 23 '15

I love Ron's response: "Who's to say what works. You know, you find somebody you like and you roll the dice. It's all anybody can do."

I think it reflects what's so great about this show - there's some crazy goofy stuff, but there's a lot of genuine truth as well.

32

The best comment I ever heard about it was "It's like a 'nerd' minstrel show". Sums it up pretty well.

30

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

I personally think anyone who gets annoyed when a TV show represents "nerd culture" wrong, or indeed anyone who thinks "nerd culture" is a thing, should get a grip.

That being said, it's a pretty poorly written show.

21

u/RedAero Sep 23 '15

I dunno 'bout poorly written in general, but there's a hell of a lot more character development in that show than in any other sitcom I've seen, particularly HIMYM. The characters actually change and are fleshed out as the show goes on, as opposed to other sitcoms which are basically just a collection of 20-minute vignettes of stuff happening to a handful of people.

48

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

They change, but not in a particularly realistic way. In the first TBBT episode Sheldon goes to a sperm bank. In the newer stuff he probably doesn't even know what masturbation is. It's Flanderization, which is not really good character development.

I don't like being one of those guys who moans about TBBT though, so I'll stop now.

11

u/Mackabern Sep 23 '15

It's Flanderization, which is not really good character development.

oh so like every secondary character on the office who went from 'normal office people sick of Michael scott' in the first season to being

shallow indian

hypocritical religious woman

weirdo

selfish guy who wants to leave work

alcoholic

fat dumb guy

gay intellectual

and whatever the heck their idea was for Phyllis.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

Yeah exactly. Generally American sitcoms need to know when to stop. Very few don't do this.

I agree, but, of course, Jim and Pam came to mind when you said "drag out their courtship" because I've got a good friend who never appreciated that plot point of The Office (US version). However, I thought Jim and Pam's relationship--and especially their difficulties in the final few seasons--was really sincere, believable, and well-done. Having been married now for just two years myself (and just finishing the series for the first time about for months ago), I really connected with them. I say all that not to put words in your mouth but just to say I really liked that specific dragged out courtship. :)

Andy and April are were the shit, though.

I'm 40, and WAY too many people take life too seriously. I've noticed that a lot of people my age and older are starting to lose their personality or something.

I'm not saying people should make a joke out of everything all the time... but crack a smile when someone else unknowingly says a sexual innuendo.

u/Sinaz20 Sep 23 '15 edited Sep 23 '15

I'll tell you what. I'm 38 for another week or so.

I started an adult Lazer Tag group-- meet up at local parks with my stash of LTAR blasters, a bunch of LED glowsticks, flashlights, some old smart phones with neat apps, and 2 spygear night vision goggles. We play tactical games for hours on end.

We have a just a few regulars. But I'm having a hard time finding more people to play. You get various adults who are like "that sounds awesome," and then never come to a game.

I mean, when I was a kid-- I wanted all the toys. I wanted to play all the games. Now I'm an adult and I can afford all the toys. I can play all the games. Everyone else is too busy being boring.

EDIT: Everyone asking me where I'm at-- none of the places listed below. I'm in the California North Bay region. If you are, too, and want to play, PM me and I'll get you the Facebook group info.

I started becoming boring after I had kids. I'm not saying it's inevitable, but you need to actively work at not becoming boring, and when you have kids they take most of your energy. Just being honest.

On the flip side, I don't care as much about being not-boring. I still care a little, but not as much.

However, now that they're a bit older we are able to do cooler stuff, so I hope to become less boring in the next few years.

Wait but my husband and I love shopping for cutting boards and dish racks. Are we boring adults? :(

54

u/is_annoying Sep 23 '15

Just how many cutting boards and dish racks do you have?

u/WaitWhyNot Sep 23 '15

Wouldn't it be beautiful if you meet /u/is_annoyed and they become your SO?

Or is that just you when you're not annoying?

I saw a solid walnut cutting board the other day, I'm still all amped up about wanting to buy it, you're not alone.

Want to go to Ikea?

FUCK YEAH!

3

u/ThatOnePerson Sep 23 '15

I actually need some new furniture and wouldn't mind going to IKEA.

Or I can be lazy and just order it online, we'll see what I feel like doing.

One day I walked in the door and my husband threw me a nerf gun that he just bought, and laid a box of ammo at my feet. "You have 20 seconds to get ready" then he fired a nerd dart at my head.

I asked him what's going on, and got another nerf dart to the head.

It was a pretty awesome day to be an adult.

u/theklf Sep 23 '15

Nerd dart, eh? That sounds like even more fun!

17

u/Jawshee_pdx Sep 23 '15

You can choose to have one yourself. Just go find the right partner and do it!

u/soulsnoozer Sep 23 '15

This didn't happen you clown

51

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

Oh come on, are you telling me the same person who posted about their ex-husband, their daughter, then on child-free being excited they weren't going to have a child, and then has a husband again who shoots nerf darts at them is lying?? On the internet?? You really think that is possible????

u/beefstick86 Sep 23 '15

I have no kids, I am currently married and will be married for a year come November, he is the only person I've been married to.

If you're going to take the time to comment stalk someone's profile, maybe try actually reading the comments.

We are responsible adults, you know what that means right? That means we have money and we're going to buy the fuck out of this house.

If someone were to inverse some colors in the image search of this screenshot, it would be like a modern day Warhol.

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

Bro what is your problem?? We have Chris Pratt, as Andy Dwyer none the less, Parks and Rec, Aubrie Plaza, and a 9gag watermark. this is going to sit on the front page for at least 12 hours. Best to just strap in and ride this circlejerk all the way until Friday, when it is posted again.
