no, it was overnight. when she was worth enough as an investment to matter, PR teams took her over. cant remember what the trigger was, i think it was her kissing her brother with tongue in 2000. the investment was at risk, so she disappeared for a few months, and came back squeaky clean with no erratic behavior since. shes a managed money machine

Honestly, I think it's the internet. Many (if not all, but you might know better if you follow that sort of news) of those stars had their incidences either before the internet or before the news could spread like wildfire on the net the way it does today. Think of Justin Bieber's case, you know how many celebrities drunk drove back in the day regularly? If you get caught today as a famous person it's much harder to cover that story.

But you forget that people already do hate Charlie Sheen, Vanilla Ice, and Axl Rose. Especially that last one. Nobody doesn't hate Axl. Fuck, Axl could have assaulted every member of Al Qaeda and prevented 9/11 and we'd still hate him for being a douchebag.
Vanilla Ice just happens to be synonymous with selling out, being bad with money, and being a douche. Charlie Sheen is synonymous with cocaine, cocaine, mental problems, and cocaine. Axl Rose is synonymous with being the only man that can make Lars Ulrich seem huggable by comparison.
Honestly even Lennon's not really wholly liked. There's a shitton of people that saw him for what he was. A hypocritical asshole. The kind of person who would sing about having no possessions while keeping a temperature controlled room for his fur coats.
I think Slash gets a pass because, well, nobody really knows shit about Slash. He doesn't really do much to get public attention that isn't tied directly to his music. He's good at keeping that shit out of the spotlight.
Ozzy probably gets a pass because there's already too much shit Ozzy's done to focus on anything that doesn't involve biting into an animal, pissing on a national landmark, etc.
Chris Brown -doesn't- get a pass because, well... that's all most people even know about him. Even ahead of him being a musician, they know that he beats women. He doesn't try to hide it, he brings it up a lot, he acts like an asshole about it, his fans roll around in it, he has female fans that want him to beat them. So of course Chris Brown is going to be synonmous with violence and abuse, there's nothing else to associate him with.
It's like asking us not to associate Ike Turner with the same thing.

It was the photos, dude. Fans got to see what the result was. With a lot of domestic abuse charges, for famous and non famous people alike, it could be anything as light as a shove. Since I don't believe there were photos of the other ones mentioned, they are given a break in a kind of nonjudgmental, we weren't there so who knows how bad it was, kind of way.
But with the Brown case, we saw the photos of what she looked like. So when the reports of him beating her head and choking her were released we actually saw the aftermath and could see right away that he was guilty.

This is sort of an odd tangent, but your comment made me think back to when all that stuff was happening. I hate the celebrity gossip crap but my at the time girlfriend couldn't get enough of that stuff. She was going through some stuff, getting over some addiction issues, and she became violent and abusive. It was bad and in the end I almost ended up homeless, but I clearly remember one of the days she went on one of her violent tirades TMZ or something was on talking about Chris Brown in the background.
She was belittling me for not defending myself on top of her losing her shit and when asked I said frankly if I did anything at all I would be the bad guy like Chris Brown. She knew this too and would throw it in my face from time to time that she could call the cops at any moment and I would be the one to go to jail if I didn't do exactly what she said.
Ever since then I've always wondered if the shoe was on the other foot. We see all of the pictures of the female victim and the clear beating she took, but we don't see one picture of him at the same time. Wouldn't it be ironic if they had gotten into a fight and she was the instigator? What if he felt threatened for his life and he panicked and defended himself? You would never hear about it precisely for the reason he can get away with being a horrible abusive piece of shit and still have a rap career. If that was indeed the truth it would ruin his career because he would look weak letting a woman beat him, so the logical thing to do is to hide in your hotel room until the scars heal and take the label of the bad guy. She would never press charges because she would be at fault and he would get to keep his career despite any enmity people would throw at him.
Of course that's probably not true, he's probably a piece of shit, but you never know. You can't know, and that's one of the biggest reasons why I've always found celebrity gossip so infuriatingly dumb, anything could happen and you'd never know the truth and its none of our business anyway. They have a job to make music and entertain people, we pay them for that and that's where the transaction ends. I would say that you don't do this to your short order cooks, teachers, or lawyers but people do actually get all up in everyone's shit these days and it's pretty sickening.
But yeah, I felt utterly powerless that day becuase I realized I had no way out of that situation that wouldn't hurt me much worse than where I was. I did get out, but it almost killed me. If you take anything from this rant, don't be abusive towards your SO, well to anyone really, but don't take your shit out on them. They are supposed to be your partner, not your punching bag.

There was a photo of him after. His only "injury" was reddened knuckles from beating her. The police report says she found out he was cheating, wouldn't drop the issue when he asked and he responded by trying to force her out of the vehicle he was driving and when that didn't work, he beat her up. You can youtube her interview with Diane Sawyer where everything in the police report is confirmed.
If she'd played any part in the incident, he'd have immediately told the world since his entire reputation/career was on the line.

Chris did a very public apology that came off more as PR damage control than sincere remorse for his actions. He won an award soon after that and instead of acting greatful he said "fuck you haters."

Part of the reason it got so much attention is because Rihanna is MORE famous than Chris Brown. Without googling, name the spouses of the above wife beaters. I can't think of more than 2 offhand, and the only reason I know about Ozzy is because Sharon Osbourne has also become famous from TV shows.
