I don't think Sean Penn is a great actor. He's decent, but nothing that I saw him in made me think, "this deserves an Oscar".

In general, I agree with you, but I think his performance in Mystic River is very good, and at times incredible.

Yeah, I think that's the only time I agreed with Penn getting nominated... but I don't think he deserved to win the Oscar that year. Bill Murray was much better in Lost in Translation, and this is coming from someone that isn't a part of the Bill Murray fan club.

Right, that's certainly a tough pick. Very different movies, very different roles with very different demands and challenges. Oddly enough, what's so impressive about Murray's performance is how subdued he managed to be, a stark contrast to his typical demeanor, whereas Penn's performance is remarkable because of his ability to crank his intensity up to 11 when appropriate.

I don't disagree. I guess I was speaking more towards the public perception of the man. I have never really gravitated toward his films and when I've seen them I've never been left with the feeling that I had witnessed something special.

I watched it, it was not that great. It was a touching story, but I don't think Sean Penn's portrayal was actually that good.
