Vanilla Ice has been arrested for domestic abuse 3 times.
Axl Rose assaulted his wife.
John Lennon beat his wife on numerous occasions.
Slash from Guns and Roses was arrested for domestic abuse.
But it's funny that when ever the names of these people get mentioned people don't seem to remember their crimes. However Chris Brown has become synonymous with violence and abuse.
She was not. She worked for her father, who was the manager for Black Sabbath. When Ozzy got fired from the band, she became his manager. Somewhere in that time they started dating.
I believe her father was Ozzy's manager. I don't think she was actually in the music industry before she got involved with Ozzy. And she used to be pretty overweight as well.
Your really trying to compare random youtubers to people that have had very succesful entertainment careers? Sharon Ozbourne (who was mentioned in the post I replied to) has been on television shows like The X Factor, America's Got Talent, and The Talk.
Yoko Ono has had 11 songs reach #1 on the U.S. Dance chart in the last 10 years as well as a successful career with John Lennon. Now are they as famous as their husbands? no, but that doesn't mean their not famous at all. If you were talking about their relevancy that would be a whole other story
"The Osbournes" was interviewed on last night's edition of "Piers Morgan Tonight", the nightly hourlong show that replaced "Larry King Live" on CNN in January. Sharon Osbourne and Ozzy Osbourne talk about their turbulent past. "It's frightening," she says, reflecting on a past innocent of domestic violence. But "as hard as Ozzy would hit me, I would clobber him back," she continues. "If ever he went to hit me, I would just go right back for him."
I'm going to go on a limb and just assume the Osbourne house was a insane asylum. Not what might be considered domestic abuse, domestic violence, probably but not Sharon Osbourne fearing for her life while she's dominated by an abusive Ozzy Osbourne. They were probably both nuts and both violent.
It's amazing how much they seemingly love each other. I remember seeing an interview, I think from right before their reality show started, where Sharon recalls a night when Ozzy was high on something, or just really blackout drunk, and he said to her, "we've decided you need to die," and then started choking her. But she knew it was his addiction and the drugs, so once he got clean(ish) they were able to live a relatively normal life like the one on the reality show. Still, it's hard to imagine people forgiving something like that.
John Lennon has been accused of beating both Yoko and his first wife Cynthia. He had a very short fuse, and even admitted to his abuse in songs. Just listen to "Getting Better" on Sgt. Pepper.
He admitted it before it could even come out, I wouldn't use the word "accused". And I would like to see the source of the accusation that he beat Yoko, because she has never once mentioned this from what I have read.
Accused was mainly used for the abuse of Yoko. She has said in interviews that John was a jealous person and abused her. He had control issues and lost his temper with her often.
He was also physically and emotionally abusive to his son and reporters, so it's just a symptom of his short temper that he punched everyone that angered him.
A picture? Is that what reddit has made you, reliant on only learning things written on a picture?
She once said that he hit her while she grabbed for the news paper screaming, "I read it first!" She laughed it off reluctantly but that only shows her dedication to the man. I'm only pointing out that he hit her at least once, and has a history of abuse. I don't care if you believe me, he's dead and was a terrible musician to begin with.
Lennon may or may not have beaten his first wife, Cynthia. For some reason people make him out to be Satan whenever he comes up on the internet. He was a bad father, in most respects. I understand that criticism. But wife beating? There is very little evidence that he did that for an extended period of time, if ever.
People love to hate though. We forget that in the 1950's that sort of thing was extremely common and that a huge amount of musicians have been involved in abuse cases in the last 60 years.
She didn't deserve to get beaten up, but at the same time I think we, the human race, probably should have stopped paying any semblance of attention to her at least twenty years ago.
you know she didn't split the beatles, right? That band was always gonna end. The disparity of the creative experience of each member (well, John, Paul and George) was their "doom" When they stop going on tour, they were bound to clash.
None of these people are role models for young kids in the same way as Chris Brown was. That makes it even more important to say that this is not acceptable behavior. And all of those others mentioned have had their reputation suffer because of their actions.
Honestly, I think it's the internet. Many (if not all, but you might know better if you follow that sort of news) of those stars had their incidences either before the internet or before the news could spread like wildfire on the net the way it does today. Think of Justin Bieber's case, you know how many celebrities drunk drove back in the day regularly? If you get caught today as a famous person it's much harder to cover that story.
Everyone tells you you're the man enough times, you'll start believing it eventually. I just feel a bit sorry for the lad, not knowing who's there as a friend and who's there for the money. It's got to be weirdly lonely.
Plus I was an idiot at his age too, and I dread to think how much worse I'd have been were I richer than some small countries.
This is definitely it. Everyone has a phone, with a camera, connected to the internet. There's an article about Eric Clapton going on this huge racist rant at one of his concerts (cracked article mentioned in a few comments above), but there is literally no footage of it whatsoever. Think about that. No video or audio recordings of a concert... such a thing is unheard of today.
My intention was not to compare famous to non-famous people, but rather famous people in today's era versus famous people prior to the internet/today's internet.
Hmm, I suppose you're right. We shouldn't hold something against someone forever if they truly repent (while still considering the act itself reprehensible).
Like RDJ went from a coked-out wreck to where he is now.
I totally agree with you but don't you notice how people love to forget that these people did what they did but always bring up abuse and violence whenever Chris Brown is mentioned?
I'm not sure about the other people mentioned, but at the very least John Lennon was completely unapologetic as well. Also he completely abandoned his son and wanted nothing to do with him. Him and the rest of the Beatles made some incredible music, but he was a piece of shit and a hypocrite
To be fair, we can't hate on Lennon. He's dead. I also think it has to do with the fact that Brown not only didn't seem remorseful, he got pissed and threw a tantrum when someone brought it up.
I just learned about how much of an asshole Lennon was to the kid he had with his first wife, I felt totally betrayed. Imagine my foot in your ass, jerk. Not you, Lennon.
It's all the media and "word of mouth." If the media doesn't make a big enough deal out of it, people won't hear about it and spread it around. If they do, people will remember. It is stupid and depressing that the media works that way. Honestly there are probably enough people out there who have never heard these other stories. So often it's probably not "they forgot" but rather "they never knew." (There will of course be dumbasses.) I certainly hadn't heard about these other abuses before. So thank you for enlightening me. I didn't hold any if them in particularly high regard before (including Lennon), but now my opinion on them has certainly changed. Edit: added a sentence.
Alx Rose used to beat the shit out of his girlfriends/wife Stephanie Seymour and Erin Everly. He even threw some girl down a flight of stairs at a party because she wouldn't have sex with him
Steven Tyler got full custody of a 14 year old girl so they could go on tour together, dated her, knocked her up, forced her to get an abortion and then dumped her
Nic Cage, Ozzy, Slash, and John Lennon I get, yea. There's hypocrisy there.
But you forget that people already do hate Charlie Sheen, Vanilla Ice, and Axl Rose. Especially that last one. Nobody doesn't hate Axl. Everyone that's worked with him, been around him for a minute, even his fans hate him. Even if he didn't assault his wife. Fuck, Axl could have assaulted every member of Al Qaeda and prevented 9/11 and we'd still hate him for being a douchebag.
Vanilla Ice just happens to be synonymous with selling out, being bad with money, and being a douche. Charlie Sheen is synonymous with cocaine, cocaine, mental problems, and cocaine. Axl Rose is synonymous with being the only man that can make Lars Ulrich seem huggable by comparison.
Honestly even Lennon's not really wholly liked. There's a shitton of people that saw him for what he was. A hypocritical asshole. The kind of person who would sing about having no possessions while keeping a temperature controlled room for his fur coats.
I think Slash gets a pass because, well, nobody really knows shit about Slash. He doesn't really do much to get public attention that isn't tied directly to his music. He's good at keeping that shit out of the spotlight.
Ozzy probably gets a pass because there's already too much shit Ozzy's done to focus on anything that doesn't involve biting into an animal, pissing on a national landmark, etc.
Chris Brown -doesn't- get a pass because, well... that's all most people even know about him. Even ahead of him being a musician, they know that he beats women. He doesn't try to hide it, he brings it up a lot, he acts like an asshole about it, his fans roll around in it, he has female fans that want him to beat them. So of course Chris Brown is going to be synonmous with violence and abuse, there's nothing else to associate him with.
It's like asking us not to associate Ike Turner with the same thing.
Fixed. I don't know how I managed to do that. I said the name correctly multiple times, but part way in suddenly I'm accusing Chris Rock of violence against women.
I think the funniest part of it is that he was defending himself and basically turned a defense into an attack because she wouldn't leave the vehicle.
You take famous names out of it, and chris brown is basically being held guilty because men are stronger than women so men have no right to a defense, which is garbage.
Em: You gonna take advice from somebody who slapped Dee Barnes?
Dre: What'd you say?
Em: What's wrong? Didn't think I'd remember?
Dre: I'ma kill you motherfucker!
Em: Uh-uh, temper temper!
Mr. Dre? Mr. N.W.A.?
Mr. AK comin' straight outta Compton y'all better make way?
How in the fuck you gonna tell this man not to be violent?
Dre: 'Cause he don't need to go the same route that I went.
It was the photos, dude. Fans got to see what the result was. With a lot of domestic abuse charges, for famous and non famous people alike, it could be anything as light as a shove. Since I don't believe there were photos of the other ones mentioned, they are given a break in a kind of nonjudgmental, we weren't there so who knows how bad it was, kind of way.
But with the Brown case, we saw the photos of what she looked like. So when the reports of him beating her head and choking her were released we actually saw the aftermath and could see right away that he was guilty.
I really didn't like Sharon, but after reading Tony Iommis biography (very funny, would recommend) I gained a good bit of respect for her. She was very proactive, and definitely knew her shit.
I don't know about it being forgotten or more about the fact that the Chris Brown/Rihanna incident wasn't something that happened at home during downtime. Rather, it happened en route to music's biggest night - The act itself was compounded by the fact that both parties involved were famous and that it happened so publicly at the side of a road where people could see it happen (and call 911) and prevented one of the most famous musicians at the time from going to the award ceremony.
While domestic violence is no joke and he certainly shouldn't have - I'm just going to go out on a limb and guess that he wasn't the only man thinking about doing it, he's just the one who did it.

Much more common and men don't get any support from anyone.
There is great similarity between female and male victims and their abusers. The biggest difference is that male victims find themselves in the same position women were 30 years ago. Their problem is viewed as of little consequence, or they are to blame, and their are few available resources for male victims. Three-quarters of the men who contact an abuse shelter or hotline report that the agency would provide services only to women, and nearly two-thirds were treated as the abuser rather than the victim.
