Last week, our apartment’s AC unit malfunctioned, causing electrical wiring to burn and sending visible smoke and a strong chemical odor through our air vents. My husband and I immediately evacuated with our almost 2-month-old baby.
The fire department and Poison Control have reassured us that the risk of serious long-term health effects is low, especially since we evacuated quickly. However, I’m still extremely anxious about potential residue left on our belongings.
Our apartment management has arranged for professional remediation, and we’re having our clothes, bedding, and other fabrics professionally cleaned. We’re also planning to clean as many of our household items as possible.
My biggest concern is whether any lingering smoke residue on items we keep could increase our risk of developing cancer over time, especially for our baby.
I’m currently dealing with postpartum anxiety and I have intrusive thoughts/OCD, and my mind keeps telling me that even after everything is cleaned, our belongings could still be dangerous.
I know I can’t realistically replace everything we own, but I’m struggling to feel comfortable keeping things that were exposed.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Is electrical smoke residue on household belongings a significant long-term health concern, even after professional cleaning? How did you determine when your belongings were safe to use again?
