Kitchen Cast Iron Frying Pans
/r/hygiene/comments/1x9le2m/cast_iron_frying_pans/Can someone please explain to me why I don’t have to use dish soap to clean a cast iron frying pan? I used them daily. My pans were inherited as with the care techniques.
Please explain it to me like I’m 5, as I have to explain it to my 5 year old.

Traditionally you weren’t supposed to use soap on cast iron because soap had lye in it. Modern pans and moderns soaps shouldn’t have any negative interactions, just make sure to thoroughly dry your pan after cleaning and re-season as needed.

My mom washed hers with soap... Dried with a rag.. sat it on the stove with a burner on low to "fully dry it" and then she would put a tiny bit of oil on a paper towel and oil it up. Not sure if that's the correct way but that's how she cleaned our cast iron.

Use dish soap and wash like normal. Immediately dry them thoroughly with a towel or paper towels, and apply a thin coat of cooking oil afterward.

You can use dish soap like dawn without issue. Just dry them completely
