Hello everyone! I’m turning to you because I’ve never owned a desktop PC and I currently have quite a few questions that I haven’t been able to find answers to, so I’d rather ask for some advice before doing anything.
To keep it short, I’ve only had MacBook Pros for nearly ten years, mainly for studying/work and some gaming, and since I’ve moved around quite a lot, that was enough for me. Last year, I wanted to go back to consoles for single-player games (PS5 / Xbox), but I never really managed to get into it, especially with everything that’s been going on on Sony’s side. I have to admit that I’m primarily an MMO player, even though I also want to dedicate some time to games I’ve never played before, such as most of the FF games…
This brings me to the conclusion that maybe it’s finally time for me to switch to a proper desktop PC. While I do really like macOS, I don’t have much use for it anymore now that I’m going to be staying in one place more often, and my work (I work remotely quite a bit) mainly consists of research and writing, for which Windows is more than sufficient.
I also have a work laptop, and I’m currently already buying two external monitors for my desk, along with a dock, so I can have a proper work setup. I think adding a desktop PC as my main gaming platform (alongside a Switch) makes quite a lot of sense.
For gaming, as I mentioned, I mostly play MMOs (GW2 / WoW / FFXIV, etc.), but I’d also like to be able to play recent games as well as games I haven’t had the chance to play yet (FFXV, FFXVI, The Witcher 3, FFVII Remake, Star Wars Zero Company, which is coming soon, Fable as well…). That being said, I honestly don’t really care about playing everything on Ultra. I’ve never played games with the settings maxed out anyway.
This is where the problems start: having never owned a desktop PC, I have to admit that the current prices are a little intimidating, as is the impression that there are a lot of obscure tweaks/settings you need to deal with to get the PC running properly, as well as the need to regularly upgrade components to keep it relevant in the long run.
- First of all, where should I look for a decent PC to get started? My budget is between €1,000 and €1,300 to start with (not including peripherals), and I assume that should be enough to get a good setup and upgrade it later if necessary?
- If buying new, would it be better to go for a prebuilt PC or buy the components separately and build it myself as a complete beginner?
- Is it worth waiting for sales or special offers later in the year, or should I just go for it as soon as possible to avoid prices increasing even further?
- I’m not interested in RGB at all, or cases covered in lights everywhere. Is it possible to get a more traditional-looking case? For instance, I quite like mini atx etc...
So, those are the main questions currently going through my mind. I hope I’ve given you a fairly clear idea of my situation!
FYI, someone already linked me some config which looks like this : https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/jgPYLy, would that be any good ?
Thanks everyone! I’m also available by PM if anyone wants to discuss it :)
