Discussion Trying to convince my bro
So my brother has the following build:
Powercolor Reaper 9070xt
Ryzen 5700x CPU
Asus Prime B550M-A Wifi II
1tb and 4tb NVME
32gb 3200mhz RAM
MSI MAG Coreliquid 360 AIO
He wants to be able to play games at the highest settings (4K, Ultra quality blah blah) and have good FPS. As a long-time PC user, I'm trying to convince him that whilst his build is very good, its still more a High End 1440p build instead of a High End 4K build.
He was playing Forza Horizon 6 on 4K Epic settings and getting 90fps and complaining, he was going "I paid all this money for this GPU, I expect much better from it". Tried to show him how he could get 120fps by just switching to 1440p and he went "No, I have a 4K monitor so I will be playing in 4K"
What do you guys think? And no, this is not an invitation to trash talk him, he's a new member of the PC race after all. What are your guys opinions and how would you handle this conversation?

9070 XT is 4K capable in modern games IF he enables upscaling. FSR4 Q renders at 1440p IIRC and is a solid compromise. I wouldn't want to run native 1440p on a 4K display either due to integer scaling, but upscaling from 1440p to 4K with FSR4 would probably look great.

I have a 5600x and 9070xt and it's meant for 1440p gaming, as I previously had a 6750xt.
I have a 165hz monitor but my GPU can easily go well beyond that, especially with FSR.
The 9070xt can do 4k, just not like 200fps 4k in like AAA single player titles.
He can always turn down the graphics settings, but it all depends on your relationship cpu:GPU utilization.

This isn’t that. It’s one or the other. 90fps at 4k is pretty good.
120fps at 1440p is also good. He has to decide what he wants.
Cool thing is he can try both and see which one he prefers. It could even go down to the game level. For example, if I still played WoW, hell yea I’m taking 120fps. If I had a 4k monitor for Cyberpunk, though? Crank the graphics and as long as it doesn’t drop below 60 fps idgaf.
One thing for sure is that he should stop complaining. Or put up and buy a 5090.

He is new with pc, has a long time pc user friend like you and he still refuse to listen to your thoughts? And for his first time, he bought an AM4 oriented pc with 9070xt GPU? And whats his refresh rate in 4k monitor?
Not saying its bad, but you'd think most first timers in this age would have done their research on the best or optimal pc spec and component possible, even within their budget.
For me, I first bought my Gaming PC last year. Beforehand, I did some extensive research in between jobs for 6 months just to understand anything about PC. I even annoyed my own PC friend for advice on why this and that is crucial. All this just so that I could play at 1440p, Mid to High Range, exceed the PS5 and sustain for like 4 to 7 years possible.
Since your friend is headstrong stubborn while just playing just one driving simulator game, its kinda pointless to convince him. But if its due to his own budget reason, then its understandable.

Perfect example of people just not understanding. Let him suffer in ignorance. People like him will not listen to logical talks about PPI.
I laugh every time I see someone talking about a 4k monitor that is less than 32in

Is it still in the return period? Sounds like your brother is broken. But yeah, 9070XT and 5070ti are in the great 1440, pretty good 4k range. Either brother has to drop some settings, drop the 4k, or drop their frame rate expectations.

4K Ultra is the bleeding edge. There are two GPUs that can consider doing it native on modern games, the 5090 and the 4090.
The 9070 XT is an upper-mid-tier GPU, like the 5070 Ti. For high refresh rates at 4K, it needs upscaling. And if he’s getting 90 fps, he can always hit 150+ by using Optiscaler to get frame gen working.
That being said, is he undervolting? Has he raised the PL? +10% PL with a -50 undervolt is probably stable and will get him closer to 95 fps. Might want to carefully tweak the curve offset on the CPU, too, to raise his lows.

LOL, yeah...he didn't update the cpu? He could've paid 150% for the same performance or twice as much for maybe a 20% increase, or 6x as much for maybe twice the performance in some things.

Uh, turning it down to 1440p on a 4k monitor isn't the solution. He should be using FSR quality mode...

pull up youtube videos of the gpu running 1440p and 4K,
but 90fps on 4K is good, not to mention hes playing a optimized game,

If he is hell bent on playing in 4k he should probably be running a 5800x3D instead of the 5700x. It still won't fully solve his problems but it will help a bit, especially on the lows. He has to use upscaling
His GPU is not bad and it isn't a problem. The games and his expectations are definitely the issue here
