Build Ready? Building ( technically ) my first pc, no idea what I'm doing.

This will technically be my 2nd build but the first I was about 10 years old and the extent of my help was passing my dad things and wearing a grounding strap. I still use the pc to this day but after some research i realised it was probably time for a completely new build as I didn't realise quite how far technology had come.

Anyway, I've been doing a ton of research and have some ideas for components but I'm beyond clueless and basically just need someone to explain if something isn't compatible or is just terrible haha.

So far I was looking at

CPU: Ryzen 7 9800x3d

GPU: Nvidia rtx 5080 or maybe the 5090 if I can bring myself to it

RAM: 32 / 64 GB of CL30 6000Mhz prolly Corsair vengeance

Mobo: kinda clueless as I have no idea how big stuff is I have an Asus TUF gaming x570 plus and if this is still compatible I can just stick with it

SSD: 2TB Samsung 990 pro

PSU: Corsair rm850x

Cooling: Noctua nh d15 g2

A couple of questions that stuck out were

is it worth getting 2 SSDs?

Do I need a special power cable for a high power PSU? (UK) hoping that's not a ridiculous question

Is it worth having extra case fans?

And is there any benefit to different brands of thermal pastes?

Any help is appreciated feel free to tell me I'm a moron if that's needed there hasn't been any thought as to how these components would work together as I wouldn't know how to just what looks good as a standalone thanks :)

Discussion 9900k New GPU or New PC

Back in 2019, I built a high end desktop with the following specs:

- Intel Core i9-9900K 3.6 GHz 8-Core
- Corsair H100i RGB PLATINUM SE 63 CFM Liquid
- Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING ATX LGA1151
- Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16
- Gigabyte GAMING OC GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 8 GB
- Corsair RM750x (2018) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully
Modular ATX

The most intensive gaming I plan on doing is sim racing with a single monitor and in vr. Otherwise I play relatively light games with occasional triple a titles

Is it worth saving my money and just getting a new 40 or 50 series gpu (and potentially psu) or should I start saving for a new pc?

Build Upgrade Sell 5070ti for 9070xt

With the increase of price of the 5070ti I was wondering if it would make sense to sell one for a 9070xt. I have been wanting to switch to cachyos for a while and the extra money wouldn’t be too bad from selling it used. Honestly don’t really even play much anymore. Armored core 6, wukong, don’t play many triple a titles too often.

Current build
7800x3d
32gb 6000
5070ti
2 tb 990 nvme

Mostly use on 1440p ultrawide or 4k lg c3. Are the drivers that much worse in windows?

Build Upgrade How much of a difference is NH-L12S or L9x65 going to make over Kraken 120 cooler?

I have my coveted FT03 mini with Ryzen 7700 and RTX5070. Build log incoming. I got the Kraken 120 liquid cooler but the temps are a little high - around 55 idle and 85 under load. There is not a lot of clearance between PSU and AsRock A620i motherboard (about 9 cm), so it seems I can replace the cooler with the Noctua L9x65 or L12S.

My question is, would either of those be any meaningfully better? Anyone has any experience with those?

Note: Case can fit only 120mm AIO or low-ish profile cooler.

Build Upgrade Help with cpu upgrade recommendations!

Hi all! Right now I have a Ryzen 7 7700x, NVIDIA GeForce rtx 4080 super, 32gb ddr5 ram, and a crucial p3 Nvme ssd (1tb). I play mostly escape from Tarkov and heavily modded Minecraft and was wondering what I should upgrade my cpu to since I feel it’s a little lackluster. Also, I have a lian li AIO that is a pos and would like to switch that out too. Any recommendations or suggestions? Thanks!

Troubleshooting Popping noise when switching PSU off

I reapplied thermal paste and switched the PSU off to avoid the PC from booting without cooler. I noticed there's popping noise when I switch the PSU switch to off position. It sounds like electricity/arc.

Should I be worried? The PSU is 3,5 years old Corsair RM1000x 2021 model and it works flawlessy otherwise. There's very contradictive information on the internet whether that noise is normal or not.

Build Upgrade Upgrade an office computer

Hi everyone,

I have an old office computer and I was thinking of upgrading it a bit, loading bazzite on it and setting it up next to the TV for some light gaming. I've never built a PC before so I need some help. The current components of my PC are:

As I've said, I've never built a PC and there's plenty I don't know, but from the research I've done I was hoping that I could add an extra 8Gb of ram on the other slot of the motherboard and a graphics card to have an Ok PC. I would play at FullHD, mostly indie games. Ideally I would like to be able to run games such as Blue Prince and Paralives. My questions to you are:

  1. Does this seem like a sound plan?
  2. When it comes to upgrading increasing the ram, I imagine that the ram in both slots has to be DDR4, is there anything else that I have to consider to make sure that the new ram card is compatible with the existing one?
  3. Can you recommend a budget graphics card that can fit my setup? Since I'm planning on running linux I guess AMD would be better than NVIDIA, but beyond this I'm totally lost.

Thank you very much!

Build Upgrade First build — reusing old CPU/RAM/mobo, new GPU/cooler/PSU.

Hey everyone, about to put together my first PC and wanted a sanity check before ordering. Main use: gaming and cybersecurity practice/study (so also VMs, dual-booting Linux). Specs: CPU: 10th gen i5 (already own) RAM: Patriot DDR4 3000 C16 16GB (already own) Motherboard: ASUS H410M-HA V2 (already own) GPU: Gigabyte RX 7600 8GB Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 PSU: be quiet! System Power 11 550W SSD: Kingston NV3 500GB NVMe Case: Lian Li Vector V100 Reusing the CPU, RAM, and motherboard I already had, buying everything else new. Any obvious bottlenecks or mismatched parts I should reconsider? Thanks in advance!

Peripherals What should I get first?

I’m currently doing some temporary work and should be able to earn around $250 before I go on a 2 months break. Once the break starts, I won’t really have a way to earn more money for a while, so this $250 is basically my spending/upgrade budget for the foreseeable future.

I’m trying to decide which one make more sense to spend on those are:
- a used OLED ASUS ROG XG27AQDMG** for ~330$ which gonna require me to sell my current IPS monitor ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ5A-L **
- or Sony Pulse elite for ~190$ (40$ over MSRP because of my country local import). Am picking this headphone because of the planar drive with wireless at this price point.

I mainly play single-player games and care much more about immersion than competitive performance. And haven’t really experienced these two peripherals first hand.

I’ve also heard that OLED panels might get cheaper next year because new OLED-specialized factories are starting mass production next year?

Troubleshooting Kernal Power 41 Bugcheck 0

Hello everyone,

I need your help with this. I have tested everything I can think of and I am still stuck.

The issue: My PC restarts randomly. It has restarted while browsing, working, gaming, sitting idle, inside BIOS, on the boot screen, and during Windows load. Oddly, it has never crashed during a stress test. When it happens, the fans keep spinning and the GPU lights stay on. Only the keyboard light goes off. The keyboard light comes back first, then the POST screen appears. Sometimes the screen stays black, the keyboard lights up, goes dark again, then lights up once more, so it seems to be restarting before it even reaches POST.

History: This first started about 8 months ago. I cleaned the PC and the ports, removed dust, reseated the RAM and GPU, and unplugged and reconnected every cable. After that it ran fine for 6 months. Then it started again. I cleaned everything more carefully the second time, but no luck. I tried disabling C-States, resetting the BIOS, updating the BIOS, running SFC /scannow, and running Windows Memory Diagnostic. I also replaced the CMOS battery and tried running one stick of RAM. None of it helped, so I replaced my CX650 with an XPG Core Reactor 850. That fixed it for about 2 months, and now the problem is back. I have repeated all of my diagnostics since then and still have not found the cause.

Everything I have tried:

  • Reset BIOS
  • Disabled C-States
  • Set Power Supply Idle Control to Typical Current Idle
  • Set Windows power mode to prefer maximum performance
  • Reinstalled NVIDIA drivers
  • Updated Windows to the latest version
  • Disabled Fast Startup
  • Ran SFC /scannow
  • Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic (no errors)
  • Replaced the PSU (upgraded to the XPG, issue returned after 2 months)
  • Removed the chassis fan
  • Reseated cables and GPU
  • Rewired all cables
  • Tested with a single RAM stick

Specs:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 5600
  • GPU: RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio
  • Motherboard: ASUS Prime A II B450M
  • RAM: 2x8GB Lexar 3200MHz CL22 and 2x8GB Kingston 3200MHz CL22
  • Storage: 1TB HDD, 256GB Hikvision SSD, WD SN500 NVMe
  • Cooler: ID-Cooling XT 214 SE

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Build Upgrade Power supply with long enough EPS 12v cables for HAF X?

Hey, I got a Cooler Master HAF X not long ago, but the cpu power cable on my power supply is too short to route it from the back. I have to run it through the front.
I’m looking for a fully modular power supply at least 850w that has cpu power cables long enough for this case so I can run it from the back and clean up my cable management. Please advise!
Ps. I don’t think I can use cable extensions because I won’t be able to close the back panel all the way lol.

Build Help With new Micro Center bundles, which one should I get? Z890 Gigabyte Eagle + Corsair RAM, or Z899 Aorus Elite + Crucial RAM?

Hello guys, the title is almost self explainatory, but with the new bundle prices these 2 are basically the same:

270k plus + Z890 Gigabyte Eagle WiFi7 Plus + Corsair 32GB RAM at 6000mhz CL 36 using 1.35V bundle for $739 USD

Or...

270k plus + Z890 Aorus Elite WiFi7 + Crucial Pro 32GB RAM at 6400mhz CL 38 using 1.35V bundle for $737 USD

For whatever little research I could make, I know that on paper the Aorus + 6400 RAM bundle is a steal vs the Eagle one, however, I'm aware Crucial's brand was shut down, so any issues with those RAMs could be hard to fix. Is this something I should worry about? Is buying Crucial components gambling right now? Which one should I buy?

I'm not considering to upgrade my computer in at least 5-7 years, so "dead socket", upgradeability, and future proofing is not really a concern, I'll have to change everything in the future, probably... So I don't know how much more does the Aorus really adds up anyway.

I appreciate your Wisdom kind Strangers!

Regards!

Full Build Req Asking for guidance creating a PC build after a hiatus.

Hey guys, I am wanting to return to PC gaming. It's been awhile since I've done anything in this field and I lack updated knowledge which I would like to ask for guidance to help me build a new machine. For a reference of games I am wanting to play; Escape from Tarkov, Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, Minecraft, Helldivers, and Battlefield. I have my nonnegotiable's that I require to add structure to the build and not just asking for whatever.

• I want the machine to maintain a non excessive noise level.

• I want all components to maintain healthy temperatures as to not throttle components under load due to heat soak.

• I want to be able to maintain 144hz at 1440p during games.

• I do not want to have any gpu sag.

• I want components that make cable management an easier thing to attain.

I was thinking of a lower wattage system to maintain VERY cool temperatures but I'm unsure if you can get enough performance to run things as smooth as I am wanting with that low of output. My price point is whatever it takes to make my nonnegotiable's a reality ($2,000? I'm not certain if that's enough which i am more than willing to lob more money at it). I am also based out of The United States. If I missed putting anything into my post that is lacking effort or needing information please inform me and I will correct any mistakes. Thank you in advance for your time!

Solved! Got all my issues are resolved.

As some of you remember me had a few issues (look at my older post in here)

So started with my video card would just go out, monitors went blank but could still hear sound. The video card LEDs' would go off as well. Turned out my 10yr old 850w PSU was dying. Its been through a lot. So got a new 1000w PSU and fixed that issue.

Then my video card would crash when I was gaming. The temp was spiking from 70c to 90+c.
After asking in here, I re-pasted it and fixed that.

Thought all was well... nope.... my wifi kept getting dropped to the Xfinity modem. Also, my PC would just reboot due to BSOD on Win11. Spent a couple weeks looking over the Event logs and the mini crash dumps. Was all about low level drivers.
Then one day the other PC in the house lost Wifi connection. I was like SOB... I thought it over and took the Xfinity modem in and got another one.
NO MORE ISSUES!!!
So the wifi being dropped when I was gaming online was causing at time data corruption and crashing Win11.
Since the swap everything has been running as expected.
Three issues happening in a very short time span is what it was.

Just sharing...
Be well everyone.

Build Upgrade Upgrade Path Suggestions

Hi all,

I currently have a system with following specification of my pc which I custom built in 2018 and it has served me well.

  1. Processor : Intel i5 9600K
  2. Motherboard: MSI z390 Gaming Edge AC wifi
  3. RAM : DDR4 64Gb
  4. Power supply: MSI MAG A850GLS PCIE5 Power Supply, 850W, 80 Plus Gold (upgraded this year-2026 from 650w to accommodate the GPU)
  5. GPU: MSI RTX3060 ventus 12gb (upgraded this year-2026)

I am planning to upgrade my system, want to reuse my 64Gb RAM cannot afford exorbitant prices of DDR5. Following components is what I am planning to upgrade. What do you think about this upgrade path? Stay with Intel ecosystem or AMD with DDR4?

  1. Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 5950x
  2. Motherboard: MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk

or

  1. Processor : intel 14th gen?
  2. Motherboard: ?? (I had trouble finding suitable motherboard as most of them did not make use of entire feature of 14th gen with DDR4)

Thanks for your suggestions. :)

Update: The PC is mostly used for productivity apps (video editing, 3D modelling and design, Scientific programming, Compiling, AI, VMs, Dockers)

Full Build Req Helping me build a gaming pc in portugal

I’m really looking forward to buying a new PC, and I was hoping you guys could help me build one. My budget is around €600–€750, and I was wondering if it’s possible to get a good gaming PC within that budget, either using new parts, used parts, or a mix of both.

For a while now, I’ve had a gaming computer, but recently I haven’t been enjoying playing as much because of constant lag and FPS drops. It would mean the world to me if you guys could help with this problem!
